Can't he just have a bit of yours?

No MIL, my ravenous 3 year old (because you don't believe in snacking) can't just have a bit of my lunch. I'm very grateful that you've looked after him this morning, and then made a ham salad sandwich for us but the portion is far too small for either of us! I did offer to bring lunch with me, but no, instead you're huffing around the kitchen making another (weeny) sandwich for DS. He'll finish that then inevitably hoover up what's left of mine.
We're getting chips on the way home!

What do you mean a shorter visit? Your op sound like you left him there and when you went to collect him she gave you something to eat.

I do agree if she gave you two bits of small bread between the two of you it's odd, but you were clearly leaving afterwards, your kid was hungry, why didn't you just give him the sandwich and then you have something later?

Palaver1 · 29/05/2019 15:09

Wow your not grateful that she looked after your child and I just hope your body language doesn’t show.
Next time take your bag full of snacks to feed your child with pack a pack lunch for him.
And maybe to show some manners something nice for her

Singlenotsingle · 29/05/2019 15:10

Maybe she wasn't expecting to provide lunch? And who says older people have a smaller appetite? That's an urban myth!

My late mother never got the smaller appetite memo Grin

Let's be precise, OP! How many slices of bread per person? What size bread? Thick, thin, medium sliced? White or brown?

ReanimatedSGB · 29/05/2019 15:20

If OP offered to bring lunch and the MIL said oh no, it's no trouble, and then produced a tiny snack for a hungry toddler and stropped when politely asked for me, then OP is NBU. Some people are very, very controlling about food and have this idea that there is a moral superiority in eating as little as possible, even in the case of growing children.

NoSauce · 29/05/2019 15:21

Some people are very controlling around food and some people are greedy too.

LightDrizzle · 29/05/2019 15:23

We are only on page 2 and yet already there are people who haven’t read the very clear first post.

  • OP did offer to bring lunch.
  • OP doesn’t rely on MIL for childcare
  • OP did ask for another sandwich which was huffily made in miniature.

Sounds like sending food irrespective of MIL’s words is the answer and it sounds like that’s the OP’s plan. Not having her hung, drawn and quartered or whatever.
I got exasperation from the initial post, not a call for GOT ways she could punish MIL for her heinous crime.

NoSauce · 29/05/2019 15:24

A sandwich made in miniature?

LightDrizzle · 29/05/2019 15:24
  • a tiny sandwich.
AmICrazyorWhat2 · 29/05/2019 15:26

Some people do serve measly portions. I'm usually hungry at my in-laws as they're v. weight-conscious nowadays and everything is small.
I have a fast metabolism and have been known to wake up starving in the middle of the night when visiting them. I now bring secret supplies or eat something extra when I'm out. Grin

RebeccaWrongDaily · 29/05/2019 15:26

a three year old 'portion' of bread is (i think) half a slice max.

Did she give them a single quarter of a slice of bread sandwich?

And really, snacks aren't necessary, nobody died for want of a breadstick/ box of raisins.

NoSauce · 29/05/2019 15:26

Yes I know what you meant, I’m just wondering how someone makes a tiny sandwich.

maggienolia · 29/05/2019 15:27

We used to dream about a sandwich between two of us....there were ten of us and we had to make do with crusts off t'bird table and what we could scrape off grandad's boots.

It does sound a bit short measure TBH. And I agree not all older people are light eaters..I feed a few with quite impressive appetites.

NaughtyLittlePassport · 29/05/2019 15:27

Shorter visit as she doesn't do snacks. DS is a handful so hasn't been on his own with her before.
Each sandwich was 2 small (vogel) slices, a slice of ham and lettuce, cucumber, tomato. It was brown bread with seeds. There may have been a scraping of mayo. Definitely spread and not butter.
She offered lunch. I said at first that I'd bring something as she wanted him till midday.
She's usually better than this though does tend to do penis portions. DH has a heaving plate, much less if you're female!

It seems a bit odd but no one will starve.

Let it go.

thebabysmellsofpooagain · 29/05/2019 15:28

At least there was a sandwich! I asked my MIL to give DC a sandwich while she looked after them at my house yesterday, and when I got home I was informed 'it didn't get eaten last week so I decided not to bother' she gave DC a bag of crisps instead! 🤯🤯🤯🤯

gingersausage · 29/05/2019 15:29

Why do you need to eat there at all though? You presumably dropped him off after breakfast and picked him up around lunchtime, so feed him the sandwich and get yourself something when you get home. You got chips anyway so I don’t really see the complaint.

I’m in no way a competitive under-eater, but I don’t see why your
MIL needed to make you a sandwich if all you were doing was collecting your child.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/05/2019 15:29

Penis portions does sound a bit stingy. Just get the chips.

madcatladyforever · 29/05/2019 15:30

God people are miserable on here. If MIL had done that to me I'd have said wtf is this!!! That's beyond stingy and ridiculous.

NoSauce · 29/05/2019 15:30

Is she trying to say that you and DS are overweight?

maggienolia · 29/05/2019 15:30

Although a three year old portion of bread would probably be a tad stale.

madcatladyforever · 29/05/2019 15:30

Penis portions chardonnay? Hahaha

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/05/2019 15:33

It's what OP says!

Grin

Nothing wrong with a unportioned one.

jomaIone · 29/05/2019 15:33

I would have just given the sandwich to the child and declined lunch myself. It was only 12 after all.
