Can't he just have a bit of yours?

No MIL, my ravenous 3 year old (because you don't believe in snacking) can't just have a bit of my lunch. I'm very grateful that you've looked after him this morning, and then made a ham salad sandwich for us but the portion is far too small for either of us! I did offer to bring lunch with me, but no, instead you're huffing around the kitchen making another (weeny) sandwich for DS. He'll finish that then inevitably hoover up what's left of mine.
We're getting chips on the way home!
Aaaargh Angry

Vogel is small slices, you need at least 2 sandwiches (4 slices) of it per person. Or 2 slices with a large omelette/ huge portion of chips.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 29/05/2019 15:34

I don't think it's joyless to not overfeed kids.
My mother in law decided our children are fussy, because she decides to 'expand their repertoire' of meals we now don't stay for food, it's not worth the row. It's her loss, no big deal.

Penis portions 🤣

It’s a tiny sandwich because the length and width of the slices of bread are smaller than average. Vogel bread is lovely but it is tiny, OP isn’t exaggerating

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 29/05/2019 15:38

Do you mean 2 slices of bread each + ham + salad? It's not great, but not that bad surely?

I'm not a fan of competitive undereating, but I'm struggling to think a three-year-old would need a portion of chips as well as that?

Ticklingcheese · 29/05/2019 15:38

Penis portions 🤣

To all pp on this and similar threads, why don't you just say, this isn't enough do you have more of x.

It may be embarrassing, but so is not tending to your guests needs.

Tartyflette · 29/05/2019 15:41

Vogel bread is indeed tiny, so YANBU.

frogsoup · 29/05/2019 15:42

"a three year old 'portion' of bread is (i think) half a slice max."

Have you ever had a 3yo? Grin Mine would have downed three Weetabix and a slice of toast on a good morning! And they are all skinny as anything. Portion size ideas on here are truly nuts sometimes.

Tartyflette · 29/05/2019 15:43

Sorry, thought this was an AIBU. (almost everything is these days)

missminagrindlay · 29/05/2019 15:43

This is another simple one. Next time you don't offer to bring lunch, you just do! 'Oh, no, I'll make you some.' 'No, really, we're quite hungry, I'd just as soon we all tuck into this' and start doling it out.

TinselAndKnickers · 29/05/2019 15:45

My MIL also does penis portions Grin on his Sunday roast DP gets a leg and loaaaads of the dark meat (my favourite) and mountains of everything else and the choice to pour his own gravy! I get the scraps and my gravy is poured all over everything without asking. We always have a nice Sunday supper Grin

RomanyQueen1 · 29/05/2019 15:46

Chips make you fat, maybe she thinks you have enough food, is she hinting you're fat.

Walkamileinmyshoesbeforeujudge · 29/05/2019 15:46

Turn up with fish and chips for you and ds next time.

AlexaAmbidextra · 29/05/2019 15:51

I don’t understand these issues. I’d have said to my mum, ‘Jesus mother, are you trying to starve us?’ We’d have laughed about it and either she or I would have made some more. I guess not everyone has that sort of relationship.

AlexaAmbidextra · 29/05/2019 15:52

Sorry, just seen it’s MIL not DM. I’d probably have said the same though.

gingersausage · 29/05/2019 15:54

@AlexaAmbidextra I agree. I don’t understand all this “hosting” and “guests” bollocks when it’s parents/in-laws.

NaughtyLittlePassport · 29/05/2019 15:56

If I ate breakfast I'd possibly have been more forgiving, but honestly, if you invite someone to lunch you should give them lunch!
Usually a Vogel sized sandwich would be fine for DS, but then he would have had fruit and a bit of cheese midmorning. His breakfast was at 0615, he's an early riser with the light mornings sadly.

Penis portions= men get more food

It sounds stingy between two of you

NoSauce · 29/05/2019 15:56

Agree Alexa. But then there would be no excuse for threads such as these if everyone spoke up.

MissConductUS · 29/05/2019 16:02

A single slice of ham is also likely to be no more than few grams, hardly enough protein for two.

My DS just came home from uni and it's a shock to be reminded of how much additional food we need to lay in for him.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/05/2019 16:03

Never heard portions called that.
was trying to work out what AC OP's phone did there.

diddl · 29/05/2019 16:03

Did you know beforehand that he wouldn't be given any snacks?

What does she usually do for lunch then when you visit?

It all seems like quite a fuss over not very much!

RebeccaWrongDaily · 29/05/2019 16:05

I've had 3.No three year old needs 3 weetabix.

OhMsBeliever · 29/05/2019 16:08

A three year old portion is half a slice of bread? Who on earth would cut a slice of bread in half and give that to a kid? Shock

None of my 5 would have eaten that and been satisfied!

And no way would they have been satisfied with sharing a sandwich with me (and nor would I)

And mine are all now teenagers and skinny rakes.

If you're going to invite people for lunch feed them!
