DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 26/05/2019 15:12

My aunt you Florrie would give us a nip of sherry as a treat, even when we were under 10. Mind you, my DH said his grandma bought him a bottle of sherry for Christmas when he was about 8 Shock

MistyMinge2 · 26/05/2019 15:25

Vienetta after roast dinner on a Sunday

Angel Delight

Cycling to local small town with my dad to buy a Cadbury's whole nut bar, which was often shared while watching a video we'd picked at video shop.

A glass of piemontello fizzy wine and a bowl of crisps on a Saturday night when we were allowed to stay up and watch something like The Ruth Rendell Mysteries or Colombo

Happy memories Smile

Almonds ans cashews were only dpe Xmas day although we did take peanuts amd raisins to school in our pack ups.

kaytee87 · 26/05/2019 15:35

Not food, I thought it was a great treat to choose a film from blockbusters at the weekend.

kaytee87 · 26/05/2019 15:36

Oh actually a scoop of icecream in a glass of irn bru was lovely!

TheWashingMachine · 26/05/2019 15:43

Whitebait, any sort of nuts other than peanuts, and sparkling water.

DurhamDurham · 26/05/2019 15:47

Fruit, bizarrely we had an endless supply of lemonade, crisps and sweets but fruit was a treat.
I remember my mum buying a load of fruit the week before Christmas and we weren't allowed to touch it until after Christmas Day. I don't ever remember eating it, probs by Boxing Day we were too busy tucking into our selection boxes to bother with the satsumas Grin

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 26/05/2019 15:47

Also we very rarely had desserts, but if they were having friends over for drinks, my mum would buy cheesecake or some kind of gateau. If I was good and kept out of the way upstairs through the evening, I could have a slice next day, it was a rare treat and I really looked forward to it.

Jojoanna · 26/05/2019 16:08

Come with ice cream in the glass

Jojoanna · 26/05/2019 16:08

Coke

ncdforthis · 26/05/2019 16:09

Vienetta, which I don't even like now!

SilverySurfer · 26/05/2019 16:22

In the 1940s/50s:

being given 2 old pence to go to the sweet shop to buy eight chews.

Roast dinner with capon chicken - twice a year at Christmas and Easter.

Going to the Lyons Corner House (upstairs posh restaurant) for our birthdays. That was the only time we ate out.

Smith's Crisps with the salt in a twist of blue paper.

A bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate (not today's crap)

mrstibbles · 26/05/2019 16:25

I love this thread SmileI was a child in the seventies and we only ever had real butter at Christmas, with awful margarine for the rest of the year. My mum used to call it 'best butter '
Fizzy drinks were also a Christmas treat!

fleshmarketclose · 26/05/2019 16:27

Ice cream, we only ever had it occasionally on a Sunday after egg and cress sandwiches.
I started baking cakes when I was about eleven so a piece of homemade victoria sponge was a treat as well which meant we didn't get ice cream if I'd made a cake.
Crisps, biscuits or any snack really we were fed meals three times a day but nothing outside of meals but a glass of water and later a cup of tea.

EmrysAtticus · 26/05/2019 16:32

So many things already listed. I actually think it was better as I drink way too much Pepsi now and eat sweet treats as an everyday thing. Feel that I need to go back to them being a treat!

Although to be fair proper traditional puddings were everyday food in my family whereas now they are a treat, need to swap that back round as at least they were homemade!

I still drink lucozade when ill however (and only when ill) and have no intention of stopping 😂

surreygirl · 26/05/2019 16:36

My Nan bringing over a bar of Galaxy chocolate on a Friday night. My other Nan having pink fondant cakes from M&S as a Easter Sunday afternoon treat.

Coke in a bottle with a paper straw and a bag of crisps from a pub or the bar at Pontins in the summer holidays.

Schler apple juice at Xmas.

Double egg and chips and a coke float in the Wimpy as a treat if my Mum had housekeeping money spare

Rossi ice cream 99 at Southend on Bank Holidays. Walls Funny Feet ice cream or a bag of Galaxy counters or a Lion bar from our corner shop.

Dried apricots. Parents were asset rich but cash poor so the apicots were precio abought from a shop, not grown in the garden. And back thenhey were really really dried, not like the soft plump things you get these days. They were very hard, and you had to suck them for hours before you got flavour from them and they became even remotely chewable! Closest thing to actual sweets we got until I was about 9!

StandardPoodle · 26/05/2019 18:55

MillieMoodle · 26/05/2019 19:48
