Travel agent has sent us to the most awful place :(

Me and my mum booked what we thought would be a lovely little break in Majorca with my 9 mo dd. Nice hotel right by Palma. However we are actually in Playa de Palma and she failed to tell us that this place is basically owned by Germans. We are the ONLY English here. Went for a walk along the beach and didn’t even hear any Spanish. Nothing but German. Noisy stag dos, very tacky that sort of thing. Now I’ve got nothing against Germans but when I imagined my relaxing holiday to Majorca this is not what I had in mind. Feel mega out of place and awkward!! Just wanted to have a rant about it.

Personally I would rather be amongst Germans than Brits on holiday. Stop blaming travel agents and Trip Advisor your holiday venue like the rest of the world.

ImaLumberJack · 25/05/2019 16:05

I didn't realise travel agents still exist. Did you research where you were going?

Cloudhopping · 25/05/2019 16:06

You are having a rant because you went to a foreign country and there are foreign people there?(albeit from a different country) I know it’s not AIBU but YABU

agreed...weird post. surely you trip advisored?

dalmatianmad · 25/05/2019 16:07

Didn't you check on trip advisor?

Just try and enjoy the rest of your holiday, doesn't really matter what nationality the other holiday makers are?!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/05/2019 16:09

I thought everyone checked reviews before booking anywhere these days?

Hizz · 25/05/2019 16:09

The travel agent "sent" you? Surely you chose the hotel yourself and the travel agent booked it. Two minutes on TripAdvisor would tell you all you need to know about any hotel.

AbbyHammond · 25/05/2019 16:11

Noisy stag dos are an issue, but surely other tourists being German is neither here nor there?

Aberforthsgoat · 25/05/2019 16:11

Come on OP surely you did some research on your hotel before you went or do you blindly trust what agents tell you?
For what it’s worth we had our hotel changed last minute in Greece and ended up at a hotel that catered mainly for German guests. We felt a little out of place at first but everyone was very polite and friendly and it was only a few days later when some very noisy, sweary and obnoxious brits turned up that we realised we hadn’t missed it at all Grin

DonFatale · 25/05/2019 16:16

What's wrong with Germans? I went to Germany on holiday last year and had a wonderful time, despite (or dare I say because of...) meeting only one other Brit in the entire fortnight.

Stag parties are another issue though, and I wouldn't be crazy about that. But even in Magaluf you can find quieter, more family-friendly restaurants and bars, so I'd go and seek some out. And Palma itself is lovely, so there's a good day out or 2 to be had at least.

LIZS · 25/05/2019 16:18

We've stayed there, admittedly booked through a German to. It was actually quite liberating not to be surrounded by Brits, and we have enjoyed similar holidays since. The beach is pleasant and bars etc certainly no worse than in some Brit dominated resorts. Handy for Palma and the airport.

Jaxhog · 25/05/2019 16:18

I'd also rather be with German tourists than Brits! Unless they are naked of course. Germans seem to like that.

iklboo · 25/05/2019 16:19

I've got to say it..... don't mention the war! Grin

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/05/2019 16:19

It’s possibly school holidays time in Germany which would explain the high German tourist. population.

Dippypippy1980 · 25/05/2019 16:25

Did you not check it out on trip adviser?

LittleAndOften · 25/05/2019 16:27

Resorts in Majorca tend to be either German or British orientated. Or sometimes a hotel can change the dominant nationality of its residents week to week (this happened to us, all Germans one week vs all Brits the next). May is definitely big for Germans in Majorca. We actually preferred them to the Brits and spoke pretend German so the worst of the Brits would leave us alone!

Highlight of the trip was convincing DH that the actual German for 'flip-flop' is 'flippen floppen' Grin

You can either embrace it or let it get to you and have a rubbish time.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 25/05/2019 16:28

I had no idea people still used travel agents.
Is the problem that it’s full of stag parties rather than them being German?

I see why you are upset and it is not good that the travel agent recommended it to you. But the internet exists and you had every chance to look it up.

marcymoos · 25/05/2019 16:32

What is the hotel called out of interest? Sounds familiar lol

DonkeyHohtay · 25/05/2019 16:33

Translation = I was too lazy to do any homework and took the travel agent's word as gospel, even though she hasn't been there either.

And would you really expect to be warned about "too many germans"?

LittleAndOften · 25/05/2019 16:35

Also, if you really can't hack it is there a rep you can complain to? You might be able to transfer elsewhere. Majorca is stunning, especially the east and North. I would never go near Palma for the reasons you describe.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/05/2019 16:36

How would you feel if you wanted to book a holiday somewhere popular with Brits and the travel agent turned you away, because of your nationality, on the basis that lots of Brits have already booked on and Germans also like that destination and they don't want to be too outnumbered?

Not accusing you of racism at all, but your OP wouldn't come across very well at all if, instead of Germans, it had been another nationality where the majority of nationals are not white. How is it relevant that those responsible for the perceived poor/antisocial behaviour happened on this occasion to be German - and how did their nationality make it 'grim'?

To echo what PPs have said, if you asked the vast, vast majority of holidaymakers across the world which nationality they would most associate with 'Noisy stag dos, very tacky that sort of thing', maybe along with refusal to embrace the local culture, food or language and integrate with people from other countries, the overwhelming response that you'd receive would be decisively one certain nationality. I'll give you a clue: that nationality wouldn't be the Germans.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 25/05/2019 16:36

No, as far as I can see noone has school holidays right now.
Must be people with preschoolers or the childless.
Sorry they get on you nerves.

S0CKS · 25/05/2019 16:37

Its Majorca hardly a cultural hot spot - your suprised to see a stag doo?

AuntieMarys · 25/05/2019 16:37

Palma is lovely. Lots of Art and culture. We stayed in a hotel which was 99% German and Scandinavian. The sky didn't fall in.

cuppycakey · 25/05/2019 16:38

Agree with PP, you sound terribly childish. Your travel agent did not send you anywhere.

If you didn't bother checking reviews then you have only yourself to blame if it isn't meeting your expectations.
