Travel agent has sent us to the most awful place :(

Me and my mum booked what we thought would be a lovely little break in Majorca with my 9 mo dd. Nice hotel right by Palma. However we are actually in Playa de Palma and she failed to tell us that this place is basically owned by Germans. We are the ONLY English here. Went for a walk along the beach and didn’t even hear any Spanish. Nothing but German. Noisy stag dos, very tacky that sort of thing. Now I’ve got nothing against Germans but when I imagined my relaxing holiday to Majorca this is not what I had in mind. Feel mega out of place and awkward!! Just wanted to have a rant about it.

Many years ago (before TripAdvisor), then-DH and I booked an all-inclusive in Tunisia. Turned out to be owned and frequented (like, 95% of the guests) by Austrians.

We didn't have a problem with the Austrians, but were furious that we hadn't been told beforehand. It being Tunisia, we'd been preparing French and brought our French phrasebooks. Had we known to brush up on German and bring those phrasebooks as well, we would have had a much better time l chatting with people.

So, I can kinda sympathise with not being told beforehand. That said, you do have TripAdvisor.

Applesbananaspears "You need to get out of the brits abroad mentality and realise that most of Mallorca is loved by Spanish as much as English"

Before calling someone you know nothing about "stupid and ignorant" perhaps you should ask. I'm Spanish. I have been to Mallorca. Once and never again. I reiterate: if you want to see real Spain and interact with Spanish people, there are plenty of places in Spain a Spaniard will recommend. I challenge you to find a single non-Mallorquin that recommends Mallorca as a holiday destination.

"Majorca has culture and chavless places in bucket loads for those who care to find out."

It does, but there are plenty of stunning, beautiful Spanish places where you really don't have to loo hard to find the same things, and then you can go to any of the main towns and not slip on foreigner's vomit in every corner.

We avoid the type of destination where people vomit in the street. We had a lovely holiday in Andalusia many years ago, and it was beautiful. I would love to visit Northern Spain next time we go there.

Don’t most people Confused

TSS its one of the first things I look for when I book a holiday don't you know? Wink

MorrisZapp · 27/05/2019 09:23

We had a few days in a small Spanish resort blighted by a large party of Eastern Europeans who drank from breakfast till the early hours, smoked like chimneys, and totally ruined the poolside atmosphere.

On day four it got worse when we finally penetrated their accents and realised they were Welsh :)

When they left on day five we cheered.

Mrskeats · 27/05/2019 09:25

I’m sure that this must have been said but haven’t you heard of google?

Ohnotanothernamechange · 27/05/2019 09:57

Ive been to this resort! The part I went to wasn't called El Arenal and was pretty much a German version of Magaluf, except they were all middle aged an older. Very few young people there. Instead of British pubs and bars there were loads of Bratwurst shops and Beer Kellers playing traditional German music.

I'm convied we the only Brits in the entire resort, in fact I didn't even hear Spanish spoken there. It was really odd and yes a bit alien. Not bad though, and in fact they were all very friendly. I can't imagine Brits would be as welcoming to a couple of Germans who accidentally found themselves in a British resort..

I remember when we went into Palma City and suddenly started hearing English spoken again. That sounded strange because it seemed like ages since we'd last heard it!

Do you lead such a sheltered life that you can't understand a Welsh accent? Hmm

Upzadaizy · 27/05/2019 10:10

Resorts are developed on a vertical business model to be pretty much self-sufficient, so anyone going to an all-inclusive resort style place is automatically going to get this sort of mono-culture.

Can't see the point myself when it's so easy to book nice hotels which aren't cheap package holiday places.

Langrish · 27/05/2019 10:11

Germans?! OMG. Shock horror. Hope you’re down at the pool putting your towels out at 3 am!

Personally, I’d rather be surrounded by Germans than Brits on a package holiday. If you think German youth on a stag are bad, just try Blackpool, Newquay or Newcastle on a Saturday night.

BlondeBumshelll · 27/05/2019 11:09

To be honest I'd be really pissed off about the Stags and I'd have hoped the travel agent would have had knowledge of whether it was a hotspot for stag and hens so I'd definitely be pissed about that.

But really you should have read reviews about the resort. It's a bit hard to do that whilst sitting in the travel agents, yes, but as soon as I got home it would be the first thing I'd do.

The only problem we ever have with German guests is that they simply refuse to queue at mealtimes and just push in front. It's infuriating.

BogglesGoggles · 27/05/2019 11:13

Everyone is always telling us that if we ever going to a holiday resort type destination to go to one of the German parts because they’re apparently better. I wouldn’t know myself because we never take those kinds of holidays but that’s what we’ve been told.

BishopofBathandWells · 27/05/2019 11:29

I very much doubt the OP will be back, given the consensus is generally that she's talking bollocks.

SeptemberIssue · 27/05/2019 12:44

It always perplexed me that people opt to holiday in foreign countries and somehow expect it to be full of British people — it’s bizarre. Confused ...

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 27/05/2019 17:03

I have also been sent to Majorca and I'm slightly disappointed to find a range of nationalities here. There are German bars and restaurants alongside tapas bars, Indian, Mexican and Italian restaurants and even Irish and Scottish pubs. Unfortunately, no sign of any English pubs as yet so I'm going to have to mix with the natives. The weather is nice though.Wink

Xueta · 27/05/2019 17:19

There certainly is at least one English pub in Ca’n Pastilla (Platja de Palma) although I’ve never been inside it! It’s a two minute walk behind Burger King.

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 27/05/2019 19:15

I'm not in that particular part of Majorca.

tierraJ · 27/05/2019 19:15

The last time I went to Majorca my sister & me got chatted up in German by two Spanish lads! We were very confused, it turned out they were asking us to a party & thought we were German as well as ten years younger!

Which was a compliment as the young German women were all attractive & well dressed plus the looking younger... but we sadly had to decline the party.

My last holiday was in Crete & there were no other English in the hotel only Germans, Swedes, Greeks & other Europeans. Which was fine. There was still an orderly queue at breakfast. Their children were well behaved. We always got sun beds on the beach.

But when going to a new place I always check the reviews on trip advisor!!!
