Travel agent has sent us to the most awful place :(

Me and my mum booked what we thought would be a lovely little break in Majorca with my 9 mo dd. Nice hotel right by Palma. However we are actually in Playa de Palma and she failed to tell us that this place is basically owned by Germans. We are the ONLY English here. Went for a walk along the beach and didn’t even hear any Spanish. Nothing but German. Noisy stag dos, very tacky that sort of thing. Now I’ve got nothing against Germans but when I imagined my relaxing holiday to Majorca this is not what I had in mind. Feel mega out of place and awkward!! Just wanted to have a rant about it.

aurynne our hotel in Santa Ponsa last year had loads of Spanish guests (and English, Dutch, French and German guests.

sashh · 26/05/2019 11:22

The place will be spotlessly clean though, Germans and Dutch tourists like the place clean.

BadLad · 26/05/2019 13:12

I worked at a holiday resort once, and a German couple came up to the bar, and ordered Martini.

"Dry Martini?" I asked.

The husband shook his head. "Zwei Martini".

Tapas - glad to see someone speaking up for Tui. We always book with them because I am lazy and when I go on holiday, I like the reassurance of knowing that someone else has sorted the flights, the transfers, and that if anything goes wrong, they will sort it, not me.

And we have had some fantastic holidays with them. It's not that we get sent away to a little Tui ghetto somewhere - when we get to our destination, we're still on holiday with all the other tourists who have booked through their cool independent websites!

TapasForTwo · 26/05/2019 13:51

I'm lazy as well. I can and have booked holidays separately, but doing it piecemeal isn't always cheaper. Our transfer in Sicily was 2 hours. I didn't want to drive and didn't fancy paying £££££ for a taxi.

Honestly, the last few places we have been have had a good mix of Europeans. I don't want to stay in British AI ghetto enclave when on holiday, which is why I would never book with First Choice for example.

The way that Tui handled our flight delay back last weekend was exemplary, so I wrote to them and told them so.

RedRiverShore · 26/05/2019 13:53

Another one here who always goes with Tui. I like that everything is together and have been to some lovely places. We are going to Iceland in August and liked that it was so easy to book

Xueta · 26/05/2019 13:55

S0CKS: Its Majorca hardly a cultural hot spot

Where to even start with this?

TapasForTwo · 26/05/2019 14:01

Exactly Xueta
Majorca has culture and chavless places in bucket loads for those who care to find out.

PollyShelby · 26/05/2019 14:03

TUI and first choice are the same company.

TapasForTwo · 26/05/2019 14:03

Posted too soon. It's like saying that all of Britain is like Blackpool or Barnsley. It isn't. Nor is all of Majorca like Magaluf.

TapasForTwo · 26/05/2019 14:04

I know that Polly, but First Choice only do all inclusive. Tui don't.

Witchofzog · 26/05/2019 14:11

I went to Majorca to a hotel mainly full of German tourists. The few Brits were complaining about it. We were in a room next to a lovely German couple and made friends with them. We had a brilliant night out with them and did some terrible karaoke. They were fun and their English was amazing. I was embarrassed that I spoke little to no German. I also met a lovely older German guy and his wife who would save me a sunbed every morning as they knew DP liked a lie in and that I would be on my own. Germans are, y'know, people like you are so lighten up n enjoy it

Starlight2004 · 26/05/2019 14:32

We have stayed in a hotel in Majorca before which was majority German guests. We found that they expect very high standards so the food, drinks and service were excellent and we had a lovely time. As others have said I find it hard to get my head around the fact that you would just arrive somewhere having done no research on it. But I'm sure you can make the best of it. The beaches in Majorca are lovely, it's easy to get from one resort to another plus you have sunshine and I'm sure Sangria!

I love the Germans but the trouble with German-centric hotels is the god awful food. So much pasta, bread, potatoes and other bland, tasteless filler. Sorry Germans, you're a great bunch of lads otherwise.

TheCaddy · 26/05/2019 14:44

Of course travel agents exist. What fucking stupid comments people make.

You are unreasonable with your comments OP.

"Of course travel agents exist. What fucking stupid comments people make."

I agree. Such superiority from some posters.

ClashCityRocker · 26/05/2019 14:56

Actually, to be honest, if I'd gone to a travel agents and said 'I'm booking a holiday with my mum and young baby, where would you recommend?'
I would be somewhat pissed off at a place that's full of stag do's. (There shouldn't be an apostrophe, should there? Fuck it, it looks odd without one.)

I mean, surely that's the point of travel agents, to find something suitable? Having said that, I would always check it on review sites and do a bit more research.

BarbaraofSevillle · 26/05/2019 15:02

Actually, one of the best Spanish omelettes I've ever had was in a 'German' hotel in Mallorca.

DP was also delighted to find that you could buy sausage and chips by the half metre Grin

TapasForTwo · 26/05/2019 15:25

I don't agree with the awful food comment either.

Applesbananaspears · 26/05/2019 16:39

you wanted to see Spaniards... why the hell did you go to Mallorca?
Stupid ignorant comment. There are Spanish people all over Mallorca both living and holidaying there. You need to get put of the brits abroad mentality and realise that most of Mallorca is loved by Spanish as much as English

BarbaraofSevillle · 26/05/2019 16:59

I saw that comment and couldn't decide if was referring to the ridiculous assertion that Mallorca is entirely one giant Magaluf style resort or the poster was trying to be clever in that the people of Mallorca consider themselves Mallorquin first and Spaniards second.

In any case, according to the Statistics Institute [[https://www.caib.es/ibestat/estadistiques/043d7774-cd6c-4363-929a-703aaa0cb9e0/e3cf1ac0-3dce-4b97-948f-ef216a613f9e/ca/I208002_1001.px]] the most common nationality of tourists to the whole of the Balearics Islands is Germany at 3.6 million then UK at 3.2 million and then Spaniards at 2.1 million, so it's not surprising that there are a lot of German tourists there, but it's also in no way a solely UK tourist destination, as we only make up about a quarter of the 12.5 million people who go there each year.
