Travel agent has sent us to the most awful place :(

Me and my mum booked what we thought would be a lovely little break in Majorca with my 9 mo dd. Nice hotel right by Palma. However we are actually in Playa de Palma and she failed to tell us that this place is basically owned by Germans. We are the ONLY English here. Went for a walk along the beach and didn’t even hear any Spanish. Nothing but German. Noisy stag dos, very tacky that sort of thing. Now I’ve got nothing against Germans but when I imagined my relaxing holiday to Majorca this is not what I had in mind. Feel mega out of place and awkward!! Just wanted to have a rant about it.

OP posts:

The nicest resorts in Majorca are the ones favoured by the Germans. We like Canyamel in Los Pinos.

Did you do your postal vote for the Brexit Party before you left?

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 25/05/2019 17:54

This is a bit racist!

I always use a travel agent. It is their work They have knowledge that I don't.

Do they? I've always thought that high street travel agents don't have insider knowledge- their shops sell many hundreds of resorts, how could they know them all? Specialist travel agents yes.

If you look on booking.com and TripAdvisor you can read reports and photos from people who have been there recently.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/05/2019 18:07

Yes, please go and complain to your rep that ‘there are too many Germans’.

No, don’t actually, don’t be that guest I used to silently call Xenophobic.
Playa de Palma has a great beach, lots of good places to eat and a great bus service to Palma city.

Punxsutawney · 25/05/2019 18:11

Back in the late 90's we were newly married and on a package holiday to Crete. We booked a day coach tour with the rep. The coach picked us up early one morning and it turned out it was a tour for German tourists. Nobody spoke English that day including the tour guide on the coach. Had a great day even though we didn't understand a word that was said. We weren't bothered, I guess it was just a mix up. We have travelled quite a lot since and we look back fondly on these kind of experiences. It's great to have memories of your travels that make you laugh, there are some amazing places to experience out there and great people to meet. I think you should just embrace where you are and get on with it.

We would always look on trip advisor before booking a hotel though. We are off to Germany this summer and looking forward to it.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 25/05/2019 18:12

Nothing like a bit of xenophobia of an afternoon, eh?

What an awful attitude. I'm sure you'll find the full English for €2 soon enough...

Passthecherrycoke · 25/05/2019 18:20

Germans are v similar to Brit’s abroad to be fair. However neither of those are a patch on being On a resort surrounded by Russians who absolutely have cultural differences that appear very rude and fucking annoying to the average Brit/ European. I spent a whole holiday in Crete with loads of Russians and even the Greeks hate them 😭 so I must admit now I do a quick Russian check before booking. We do use travel agents, as above a decent one will have specialist knowledge

Lemonsquinky · 25/05/2019 18:25

This has made me laugh. I've had a really shitty couple of weeks at this has cheered me up. I don't know why xenophobia in the afternoon would, but I guess it has.
We had a holiday in Majorca in a mainly German family hotel. We enjoyed it. Where can you go on holiday and only come across British people? I'm really asking, this isn't the start of a Jim Davidson joke...

TruffleShuffles · 25/05/2019 18:26

One of the best parts of going on holiday is seeing all the different nationalities about, no matter how strange you think customs from different countries are I find it fascinating to watch.

It’s the best at breakfast in a big hotel, I can even put up with the queue jumping. I couldn’t think of anything worse than going on holiday and only seeing British people. My patience can wear thin with Americans though Blush

Passthecherrycoke · 25/05/2019 18:27

There aren’t different nationalities though. Only Germans

donajimena · 25/05/2019 18:30

I don't think the OP is coming back. I will defend them in the dislike of Playa de Palma. Its really not that nice. I'd say magaluf has more charm and thats saying something. As for Germans I haven't met many but for some reason I meet them when I'm camping in Wales. They have always been excellent company.

Hollowvictory · 25/05/2019 18:32

Travel agent hasn't 'sent you' anywhere 😂.
They can recommend places, it's up to you where you book. Are you in Arenal? It's well known as a German resort and down market. Palma is lovely though, call the travel agent and switch resorts

Hollowvictory · 25/05/2019 18:36

And I do quite often book with travel agents.

luckylavender · 25/05/2019 18:37

Weird thread. Were you coerced into going there? Or could you have had some input?

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/05/2019 18:39

And the mountains of cake in the afternoon

And the morning. If you time it right in a hotel aimed at German people, you can have a very leisurely breakfast followed by coffee and cake for elevenses.

We found Paguera by accident on a Mallorcan holiday. We had been to Andrax, which is where a Scottish farmer who moved to Mallorca and wrote several books about the experience (Peter Kerr, which I really recommend) and then we went to Port Andrax, which was a little too expensive Yacht Club for us so we dropped into Paguera on the way back to Palma.

It's a lovely resort, and again, almost all the tourists who visit there are German, but families and couples not rowdy drunks. There are 3 lovely beaches, a nice promenade with a fantastic mish mash of German/Spanish restaurants and a naice Booths style supermarket.

We liked it so much we've been back there for 2 holidays and the last one was during some football tournamet where England was knocked out early as usual and Germany did better and despite neither of us really being into football I remember watching the football with dozens of Germans in a really friendly chilled atmosphere and joining in all the cheering and hugging when Germany won.

And the hotel was beautiful, as was the food and pool, and yes there was lots of cake on the breakfast/brunch buffet.

OP it sounds like your mistake has been going to 'Magaluf for Germans' not the German people in particular. Was there no conversation about what sort of holiday you wanted? That would be the point of using a travel agent after all.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 25/05/2019 18:53

Can't get past the fact you booked with a travel agent. I didn't think there were travel agents any more.

Really? How can you not realise that travel agents still exist? Do you never go into a town centre any more? We have three on our high street alone Confused

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/05/2019 18:53

Maybe OP did check the reviews but couldn't read them because they were all in German? grin

Grin Grin Grin

EleanorLavish · 25/05/2019 18:54

There are 2 travel agents within walking distance of my house, and a third a 10 min drive away. Don't know anyone who uses them.
Surely all you have to do is eat, sleep, sunbathe and drink? The universal 'on my holidays' activities?

EleanorLavish · 25/05/2019 18:55

Plus,I've been to Majorca (north of the island) and there was stuff to do.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/05/2019 18:56

Should I be worried that, owing to the topic of this thread, I automatically read Iamtheworst as Iamthewurst ?! Grin

PickleSarnie · 25/05/2019 18:58

I was reading reviews on the place we are going to in France. There was one review complaining that there were no English. Just Dutch, German and French.

It was that review that swung it for me and made me book.

and not just because Dutch men are hot

elizabethdraper · 25/05/2019 18:59

I understand your pain OP. Just back from Spain, we were the only Irish people there. Everyone else was British. It was terrible, all the food and bars were geared for the brits.
Not much spainish food or beer.

lljkk · 25/05/2019 19:02

Where can you go on holiday and only come across British people?

Mar Senses, Port de Pollensa, Mallorca... 2 weeks ago!
Made the hol easy, tbh. And the staff were locals, at least, as were most the shopkeepers. We were on the verge of drinking with staff & asking them to tell us rude words in Mallorquín.
