How do you not be irritated by everyone??

Is this the curse of being middle aged? Or am I just a miserable old hag? I think I do a pretty good job of containing my seething rage and incomprehension of everyone's idiocy. I smile alot and friendly and chatty. But, wow, it's an effort. I used to love 'people', finding out about them and enjoyed how different we all are. Now I want to live in a cave and never have to have an interaction with anyone I don't already know and like, ever again

God don’t get me started on the influencers and bloggers. Have people become so feeble they can’t make a decision on what to buy/wear/eat/watch without some internet random making the decision for them? It’s a complete lack of critical thinking ability, and I get vexed every time I come up against someone who cannot think for themselves, or have a go at everyday problem solving without some sort of intervention.

I’m fast losing tolerance for all kinds of bullshit. I’m tired of being patronised and mansplained to. I’m starting to think Thanos had the right idea with his wiping out half the universe thing. Then I got the rage watching the film and moaned to DH about yet another man assuming that he knows best.

Oh dear this started early for me, my late 20s when I had kids! Can't imagine how it will get worse Grin

Asta19 · 25/05/2019 12:43

I do think a lot of it stems from the modern world now. Both my DCs are nearly 30 and they feel the same way.

I think if I had to be really honest, the only two people I truly like in the world are them! Of course there are people I care about outside of that, but I can’t think of one other person that doesn’t annoy me in some way. A friend and I have had mini breaks abroad in the past, but she pissed me off way too much during the last one that I won’t go with her again (of course I’m too polite to tell her this so she keeps asking “when are we going away again” and I keep making excuses!). I went away last week with my DD instead.

Like a pp I like mumsnet because I can interact as much or as little as I want. You get good conversations without having to physically sit there and listen! And you can just ignore the bullshit threads! There aren’t many places I do go now because I don’t want to socialise. I have a nice home and garden (for my fresh air quota!) so I see no need to venture elsewhere unless I need to. I am a miserable old grouch but I’m happy!

It has got worse the constant self congratulation etc. It's really embarrassing. Didn't it used to be kind of mortifying to congratulate yourself so much? and sort of childish?

I was listening to the radio the other day (music station which is usually OK) and even they started going on about comments on twitter about how great the music was today. I cringed for them. It seems almost like a lack of confidence that people constantly need to be reminded of how great they are. And it seems so uncomfortable. Maybe most people younger are used to it now. Not sure.

Grin at this whole thread.
I’m 36 and feel like this - well mainly I feel bored with it all.
I had to listen to two women try and outdo each other about their forceps births when I took dd to playgroup this week. I could actually have wept with boredom. Who gives a fuck? They weren’t even listening to each other, they just wanted to get their own story in.
I do think ‘who gives a fuck’ a lot of the time. How many spellings your kid got right? What reading level they are on? Where you’re going on holiday? Generally - don’t give a fuck.

Asta19 · 25/05/2019 17:42

I notice this so often now in social situations. It seems really rare to have an actual conversation. Many of my friends, they’re nice, not bad people, but really they just want to say what they want to say and are not really interested in a proper two way discussion! That’s why I’ve really cut down the time I spend with them as I’m not really interested in attending “update meetings”. They’re not interested in my life. They would be horrified to hear me say that but it’s true. A couple of years back I lived abroad for a few months in a country very different to here. All I got was “did you have a nice time” before they went back to talking about themselves! If the situation were reversed I would have been full of questions about what they did, what their life was like there etc. I would have been genuinely really interested.

Ha! Completely with you on this OP 😆
My tolerance for the human race is diminishing daily
My retirement plan involves buying a caravan, some goats and a sign for the door that says fuck off

Haha love this thread! If you find the answer to your original question, please let me know!

I’m sure about that this time I will be back to school

goodluckandgodspeed · 25/05/2019 18:08

I actually find my ds possibly the most irritating person on the planet, which is unfortunate as I have to live with him very closely for at least another 9 years.
He’s intensely intensely irritating.

MayFayner · 25/05/2019 18:23

I have no tolerance for BS at all. I can’t listen to the radio, watch scheduled tv or read the paper without getting furious. The “local” radio news in particular- I imagine them preparing it thinking “oh, here’s some old rubbish we can spout that will take up 2 minutes until we can run another one of our never-ending ad breaks.”

user87382294757 · 25/05/2019 18:27

The slowness and faffing of teenage DC can be quite frustrating...even if they are lovely...I'm sure they think the same of me though.

user87382294757 · 25/05/2019 18:30

I do think ‘who gives a fuck’ a lot of the time

There's a book on this...the Life Changing Magic of not giving a fck it is called. Basically about this. Quite helpful. It tells you to say to yourself "Fck you, (whatever it is) This works quite well. So fill in X with whatever it is, new, Brexit, Mumsnet...whatever is annoying you.

RosaWaiting · 26/05/2019 08:11

I think I heard the author of that book trying to speak - she was too annoying to listen to Grin

I wasn't seeking it out, I gather it's aimed at people who have a lot of obligations they can get rid of etc....

VibezCartel · 26/05/2019 22:00

@Asta19 - love your post. I can so relate.
