Euro elections - remainers come hither

Sorry if this has been done before.

It's the Euro elections on Thursday and I'm a remainer. I've been confused about which party to vote for to give the best opposition to the pro Brexit parties. I really wish Change UK had partnered up with the Lib Dems but alas, that wasn't to be. I think on balance I will be voting for the Lib Dems - I usually vote for them in General Elections although I admire the Change MPs who put their careers on the line for something different.

I just wondered what other remainers were thinking. My friends don't really talk about this sort of thing so thought here might be a good place to discuss but apologies if this isn't allowed in an election period.

OP posts:

Anyone know who they pick say if Change Uk wins? There are 8 candidates....... Confused

I have never voted in an EU election in the UK before.

Irulez · 20/05/2019 12:25

Also - has anyone any clue about the 11 independents running?

Irulez · 20/05/2019 12:26

In Ireland I vaguely recall a party puts up a candidate(s), rather than you voting for the party and them then choosing a candidate. It makes it easier to decipher... Could be wrong but I think that's how it's organised in Ireland.

I was surprised and not just a little confused when I received the ballot sheet to be honest.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 20/05/2019 12:28

@Irulez

There are 19 options on the ballot (I use a postal vote), 11 of which are independents, 8 of which are parties. I don't recognise any of the names within the parties and there's too many to google every one of them.

You won't necessarily recognise the names. In these elections, you are voting for a party, not for a specific candidate/personality so there won't have been any campaigning for specific people. There are a smattering of 'personalities' (Ann Widdecombe and Annunziata Rees-Mogg for the Brexit Party, Molly Scott Cato for the Greens, etc.), but most of the personalities in each of the large parties are current MPs and therefore already have a job and aren't standing in the European elections.

The one on the top of the list. Parties order the candidates on the list with their favoured candidate at the top, followed by their second favoured, etc.

There’s a good take on all of this on the remainiacs podcast from last week, about 39 mins (ish) in - the eve of war episode. Well worth a listen

Irulez · 20/05/2019 12:41

Molly Scott Cato for the Greens

She's not on the list for the Greens.

I've listed the Greens on the previous page - a few posts back.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 20/05/2019 12:51

@Irulez the lists are different for each constituency. Molly Scott Cato is at the top of the Green list for SW England.

Peridot1 · 20/05/2019 12:59

Yes Molly Scott Cato is in the SW and is a current MEP. And apparently very good. She is refusing to be at any hustings that Carl Benjamin is at. (He is the lowlife who said he “wouldn’t even rape her” about Jess Phillips)

Irulez · 20/05/2019 13:05

Ah - get you now. Even more confusing so!! Bloody hell.

lljkk · 20/05/2019 20:17

I believe Corbyn when he says he voted Remain. He spoke well on Marr, yesterday.

Corbyn doesn't care much about Brexit. He finds it a distraction from what he does care about. He may be the only person in whole UK who feels 'meh' about Brexit either way. Is why he confuses everyone.

noodlenosefraggle · 20/05/2019 20:43

Corbyn has been a lifelong brexiteer. He isn't meh about Brexit. He is trying to keep momentum happy because they keep him in power. He wants Brexit because he sees the EU as a Capitalist construct but wants to blame the Tories for it. As a result, half the shadow cabinet are wandering round talking about how we need a people's vote when it's not Labour Party policy and he's trying desperately to avoid it. Their excuse that the country is split so they want to cater to everyone doesn't work when no one knows what they will be voting for if they vote for them.

Tavannach · 20/05/2019 20:49

Problem withst is he's now the Leader of the Opposition and should be giving a voice to those who oppose Government policy.
He doesn't confuse people - they see him for what he is.

Tavannach · 20/05/2019 20:51

with that

lljkk · 20/05/2019 21:04

Well, Corbyn confuses me! But As Boris made clear (too), I am not one of The People.

chocolateworshipper · 20/05/2019 22:01

It depends which region you're in. I'm voting Lib Deb - not a perfect party, but their MEP in my region is amazing.

Comet456 · 20/05/2019 22:26

I’ve just checked our candidate list for the East Midlands and Annumziatt Frittata Rees Firkin Mogg is standing. Do I spoil my paper and draw a massive turd around her head? I’m a bit put out that she will be polluting my air on Thursday TBH.

Irulez · 20/05/2019 23:47

I usually vote Labour. I don't know enough about the Lib Dems and apart from Remain, Change UK seem to have no other mandate.

I think I'll vote Labour again (yikes).

I feel very uneducated about this vote!

Irulez · 20/05/2019 23:48

Interesting that no-one on this thread has mentioned the Conservatives? Are they even on the ballot? [will check now]

Irulez · 20/05/2019 23:50

There's a party called 'Conservative and Unionist Party'. Is that the Conservatives/Tories/Theresa May party? Is that what they're called? Shock

Irulez · 20/05/2019 23:51

Fuck, I need to google a lot more.

PickAChew · 20/05/2019 23:52

Yes, that's the tories.

averylongtimeago · 20/05/2019 23:53

Irulez why would any remain voter vote for the Torys?
And yes, they are called the Conservative and Unionist Party .

averylongtimeago · 20/05/2019 23:55

And in this election Labour are not the party to vote for if you want to support remain- they support Brexit, although a softer version than the Torys
