Euro elections - remainers come hither

Electionpondering · 19/05/2019 17:01

Sorry if this has been done before.

It's the Euro elections on Thursday and I'm a remainer. I've been confused about which party to vote for to give the best opposition to the pro Brexit parties. I really wish Change UK had partnered up with the Lib Dems but alas, that wasn't to be. I think on balance I will be voting for the Lib Dems - I usually vote for them in General Elections although I admire the Change MPs who put their careers on the line for something different.

I just wondered what other remainers were thinking. My friends don't really talk about this sort of thing so thought here might be a good place to discuss but apologies if this isn't allowed in an election period.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/05/2019 18:08

I'm voting Lib Dems. I'm in the SE region and Catherine Bearder has an excellent track record as an MEP.

HollowTalk · 19/05/2019 18:08

I'm impressed by that, too, LilyRose88.

OriginofSpecies · 19/05/2019 18:10

It looks as though Remainvoter.com are still crunching the numbers...

www.remainvoter.com/remain-tactical-voting-recommendation

The idea is that they use some sort of algorithm to work out which tactical vote will benefit Remain and will do the best to block Leave parties in each constituency.

For the first time in my life I’ll be voting SNP. My granny will be spinning in her grave!

GhostofFrankGrimes · 19/05/2019 18:11

Change UK are polling very, very badly. They are partially splitting the remain vote that really should be backing the LD's or Greens based on tactical voting and realistically returning MEP's. .

NigellasGuest · 19/05/2019 18:11

Remainvoter now say on their website that they are still crunching their numbers and aim to get emails out before the 23rd, so it looks like it won't be today, now or even tomorrow.

NigellasGuest · 19/05/2019 18:12

Sorry ignore comma after now

behindlocknumbernine · 19/05/2019 18:12

I'm in the South East and voting LibDem (for the same reason as oh you bad kitten)

PlumCakeChica · 19/05/2019 18:13

Lib Dem’s. And dh too who has never voted for them before.

APipkinOfPepper · 19/05/2019 18:15

Lib Dem here I think, they seem to be polling reasonably well so I’m assuming that would be best to avoid splitting the vote too much

weegiemum · 19/05/2019 18:15

SNP, the obvious anti-brexit vote in Scotland. I usually vote for them anyway.

MustardScreams · 19/05/2019 18:17

Voting tactically on Thursday is the way to go. As much as I respect Change UK the only thing they will manage to do is split the vote and potentially allow pro-Brexit parties to win. We need to be together on voting to have even a chance of preventing this.

springgreensunshine · 19/05/2019 18:18

Me too MrsAmaretto

First ever SNP vote. I suspect I might be a yes in any independence referendum next time round too.

Dockray · 19/05/2019 18:21

Lib dems. To be honest none of the parties really inspire me but need it is my most important issue and they have been clearly against it. I'd be interest in change uk but don't want to risk splitting the remain vote and LD looks to have the edge plus I love a sweary slogan

Can't vote Labour while they piss about. If they came out even for a 2nd ref then they'd get my vote on a tactical basis. But I can't trust that a vote for them wouldn't be spun as a vote in support of brexit so lib dems it is. Same for dh.

OriginofSpecies · 19/05/2019 18:25

Just had my email from Remain Voter

Here is your voting recommendation for Thursday's EU Election vote. First, 3 things

1 - Get out and vote. Take a friend. Make a facebook event. Turnout is a winner!

2 - Be confident. Less than 500,000 smart Remain votes across the UK could change the face of this election. 6 million of us signed the #RevokeA50 petition. You've got this. Use the hashtag #RemainVoter.

3 - Sharing is caring. Share this recommendation for your area on your Facebook and Twitter feed. Include @RemainVoter and we will RT.

It's that simple. This is how we win.
East Midlands - Vote Green

Current polling predicts: 1 Remainer party will win 1 seat
Smart Voting indicates: A further seat can be gained for a second pro-European party.

The Liberal Democrats look secure in winning a single seat. The next best placed pro-European party to win is the Greens. A Greens gain will displace a pro-Brexit party, and lock them out of the East Midlands region.

Remain Voter only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.
Eastern England - Vote Green

Current Polling predicts: 2 Remainer seats
Smart Voting indicates: We can gain an additional seat, bringing the total to 3.

The Liberal Democrats look secure in this region, but the Greens are fighting for last seat against the Brexit Party. RemainVoter.com recommends voting Green to secure a Remainer seat in East of England, blocking Farage.

Remain Voter only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.
London - Vote Change UK

Current Polling predicts: 3 Remainer seats across two parties.
Smart Voting indicates: We can gain a 4th seat for a third pro-European party.

Lib Dem and Green seats look secure, so RemainVoter.com recommends vote Change UK to gain a 4th Remain seat in London. With Labour being non-committal, this means pro-Brexit parties cannot claim the capital.

We only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.
North East Vote Liberal Democrat

Current Polling predicts 0 Remain seats
Smart Voting indicates: National vote share assist

With only 3 seats, the only way a Remainer can get elected is if we all co-operate. To bring a single seat within reach of a Remain party, RemainVoter.com recommends voting Liberal Democrat, and bringing a friend to the polling station. This will increase the key indicator of national vote share for Remain parties: don't give up.

We only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.
North West vote Green

Current Polling predicts: 1 Remainer seat is secure
Smart Voting indicates: 1 more Remain seat can be added

LDs look likely to win a seat. And just a tiny movement from Lab and CUK voters to Green will give Remainers an extra seat. With 3 sitting Lab MEP retaining seats, smart voting will deliver a strong pro-European delegation.

We only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.
Northern Ireland vote your preference: Alliance; SDLP; Green; Sinn Fein

In order to vote for these Remain parties in Northern Ireland, it is important NOT to add a number against any other party.

Under Single Transferable Vote, if you don't put a number next to a party, your vote can never be counted for them.
Scotland vote Liberal Democrats to win 2 Remain seats

Current polling predicts: 3 Remain seats
Smart Voting indicates: 5 Remain seats

Scotland is interesting! Recent polling shows SNP confidently gaining 3 seats with undecided Labour voters blocking a 4th. RemainVoter.com modelling shows LDs have the momentum to win a seat while helping the SNP win the 4th seat. So smart voting can win a seat from a pro-Brexit party while capitalising on Labour's lack of commitment to their majority Remain membership.

We only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.
South East vote Change UK

Current Polling predicts: 3 Remainer seats for 2 pro-EU parties
Smart Voting indicates: We can gain a further seat for a third pro-EU party

The Liberal Democrats look secure on 2 seats and the Greens on 1 seat. Neither will get another, so vote Change UK to get a 4th Remainer seat in the Southeast.

We only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.
South West vote Green

Current Polling predicts: 1 Remainer seat is secure
Smart Voting indicates: We can gain 1 more Remainer MEP

The Liberal Democrat seat is secure, so vote Green to get a second Remain seat in the Southwest. Smart Voting returns a sitting MEP who is highly visible promoting the EU and combatting corruption.

We only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.
Wales vote Liberal Democrats

Current Polling predicts: 1 Remainer seat is secure
Smart Voting indicates: 1 more Remain seat can be added

Plaid Cymru is set to win one seat in Wales. With smart voting, the Liberal Democrats can also win a seat without encroaching on Plaid Cyrmu. That gain will mean half the MEPs in Wales are outright Remain supporters.

We only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.
West Midlands vote Green

Current Polling predicts: 1 Remainer seat is secure
Smart Voting indicates: 1 more Remain seat can be added

It looks like the Liberal Democrats will win one seat. With Remainers voting Green, we can add a second Remain supporting MEP in the West Midlands, with Labour losing out because of its lack of commitment to their majority Remain membership.

We only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.
Yorkshire and the Humber vote Green

Current Polling predicts: 1 Remainer seat is secure
Smart Voting indicates: 1 more Remain seat can be added

The Liberal Democrats are set to win a seat. If enough people vote Green, they too will win a seat. Winning a Green seat in Yorkshire and the Humber will send a strong message that there is demand for Remain throughout the country.

We only recommend when the number of Remain seats increase and Leave seats decrease.

Normally Labour, drawn to Green but LibDems seem to have slightly more chance than a snowball in Hell.
Not voting Change UK, too annoyed at them as they have split the remain vote and I really think their MPs should have resigned and stood in by-elections

TattiePants · 19/05/2019 18:29

I'm a Labour Party member but will be voting Lib Dem this time. I'm in the NE and as we only have 3 MEPs, I'm just praying that they aren't all Brexit Party.

Jsmith99 · 19/05/2019 18:35

I was in Leicester city centre yesterday. The Brexit Party were out campaigning in force, with a stand, posters, flyers, badges etc etc. Dozens of activists, mostly male and over 60, were engaging with the public. Hundreds of people were walking around town with Brexit Party stickers on their chests.

It was an impressive, but hugely depressing, sight.

Where was the unified Remain campaign? Where were the Remain parties? Answer - nowhere. If our side are incapable of getting out act together to run a proper campaign, we don’t deserve to get many votes. I despair.

noodlenosefraggle · 19/05/2019 18:35

pollywollydoodah Thanks for that. I'm in the East and was going to vote Lib Dem, but Ill consider green now. There are a lot of Vote Green signs round where I live, but I didn't get a leaflet. I'm easy about voting LD. I think they did their best in coalition. They couldn't have got everything they wanted to do done as they were the minor coalition partner, but they curbed the worst excesses of the Tory Party. Cameron, idiot that he was, was relying on being in a coalition with them again to avoid having to be held to his manifesto promise of holding a referendum on Brexit. They were the Tory whipping boys, and we fell for it.

TattiePants · 19/05/2019 18:36

Just read the info from 'Remain Voter', how depressing that I live in the only part of the country predicted to get no remain seats.

BambooBoobam · 19/05/2019 18:36

After the email, I now don’t know whether to vote Lib Dem or Change! (South east)

APipkinOfPepper · 19/05/2019 18:49

I don’t understand that email / recommendation. Surely if a large portion of the remain voters follow the recommendations the safe remain seats will not necessarily be so safe?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/05/2019 18:54

That’s what I was wondering APipkin

OriginofSpecies · 19/05/2019 19:02

I'm not sure if I understand either, APipkin

AutumnCrow · 19/05/2019 19:03

'RemainVoter' has lost the plot.

The best option by far in the South-East is to vote for the Lib Dem Catherine Bearder.
