Euro elections - remainers come hither

Sorry if this has been done before.

It's the Euro elections on Thursday and I'm a remainer. I've been confused about which party to vote for to give the best opposition to the pro Brexit parties. I really wish Change UK had partnered up with the Lib Dems but alas, that wasn't to be. I think on balance I will be voting for the Lib Dems - I usually vote for them in General Elections although I admire the Change MPs who put their careers on the line for something different.

I just wondered what other remainers were thinking. My friends don't really talk about this sort of thing so thought here might be a good place to discuss but apologies if this isn't allowed in an election period.

I’m starting to wonder if there are secret backers behind Remain Voter because most of the suggestions are slightly ridiculous.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 19/05/2019 19:03

I’m not voting.

I just cannot bring myself to vote for anyone.

@ChardonnaysPrettySister

Utterly ridiculous stance. You do know you’re not voting for parliament? It’s basically being used as a soft referendum RE Brexit. Surely you have an opinion on leave or remain?

Electionpondering · 19/05/2019 19:06

I hadn't heard of the Remain Voter thing. Thanks for posting about thay. It doesn't quite make sense to me on first reading but I'll look at it more closely later. Is it an independent website?

I think I'll probably stick with the Lib Dems. It's suggesting Change UK in my area but I'm not convinced about that (mainly now on the back of this thread Grin).

Yes I do.

I went to three Marches and sent countless letters and sighted petitions.

Crunchymum · 19/05/2019 19:07

I've already voted (postal) and it was Lib Dem. I'm a remainer in London borough with a very safe Labour seat.

MustardScreams · 19/05/2019 19:07

You’re not voting for your Labour seat, it’s European Elections, who stands in your area has nothing to do with Thursday.

MustardScreams · 19/05/2019 19:08

Flipping heck, mixed up two replies there! Apologies @Crunchymum!

Crunchymum · 19/05/2019 19:16

I was just giving my political lowdown Grin

I'm a remainer, in a very safe labour constituency who voted Lib Dem in the European elections.

Whisky2014 · 19/05/2019 19:17

Hmm just checked remainvoter and it said to vote Lib dems if in Scotland

AutumnCrow · 19/05/2019 19:25

But the SNP are the strongest Remain party in Scotland?

MustardScreams · 19/05/2019 19:29

They absolutely are, hence my apprehension at their voting suggestions.

Kez200 · 19/05/2019 19:33

South West and a Brexitland voting Green.

VeniVidiViciTwice · 19/05/2019 19:42

Voting Lib dem here. Normally a Labour voter but Lib Dems have my full support here (Northern England).

AutumnCrow · 19/05/2019 19:44

I think therefore that 'RemainVoter' is very fishy

MustardScreams · 19/05/2019 19:45

@AutumnCrow completely agree! I wouldn’t surprised if there was Leave money being pumped into that website. Clever idea!

maddening · 19/05/2019 19:54

I am voting lib dem - I think that the coalition meant that the impact of tories was less than it would have been due to lib dems but they could not stop all of the tories and it is unfair to judge the lib dems for that

AutumnCrow · 19/05/2019 19:55

Unless RemainVoter trying to maximise seats by saying, well look, Lib Dems/SNP will come top here anyway so go for a good second choice as your first choice as it's PR??

But that's a very risky numbers game where European Election PR is concerned and, say, the Lib Dems would win more seats in the South-East with more votes.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/05/2019 20:04

I don’t disagree with them that there are 2 remain seats up for grabs in the south west. But I’m not sure that’s helped me make up my mind as much as I thought it would.

BoogleMcGroogle · 19/05/2019 20:08

I'm very dubious about the Remain Voter website. Given I live in an area of the country with a reasonably strong Lib Dem presence ( until recently, several MP's), and they took a couple of councils in the recent local elections, the logic of voting Green just doesn't add up ( I have happily voted Green in local elections before).

Anyhow, I'm voting Lib Dem, so are my husband, my parents and nearly all my friends and the bloke who mows my lawn once a fortnight (or he might just have been being polite, I have a poster up).

I hope that website doesn't turn out to be Aaron Wanks having a laugh.

bumblingbovine49 · 19/05/2019 20:14

Am voting lib dem I think.

Slightly off topic but their 'bollocks to Brexit' slogan made me laugh though it might be risky if it puts some people off.

Lalallama · 19/05/2019 20:15

That remain voter email has confused me. It's suggesting I vote Green because there is a safe Lib Dem seat so the second seat could go to Greens and end up with two remain seats. But I was going to vote Lib Dem, so if I and others take the advice and don't, then surely the Lib Dem seat is no longer safe?

Whisky2014 · 19/05/2019 20:16

I'm actually wondering what benefit any of this will have. Just because we choose a party aligned with remaining in the EU, that doesn't change the fact we are leaving....

Whisky2014 · 19/05/2019 20:18

I think it based it on the people who aren't sure, swaying the vote. So if you were set to vote Lib dems, do that.
It's the same with Scotland. If everyone who was gona vote snp then switched to lib dems as per the website, then their numbers don't work. It only works if co fused Labour voters switch to lib dems and the snp voters stick with snp.
