Are there any conspiracy theories that you just think could have an element of truth?

I love all things conspiracy theory - from a psychological/social point of view it's interesting to see what makes people fearful or pessimistic.

But I often do see some conspiracy theories a bit like Urban legends in that they could be an exaggerated truth.

Are there any conspiracy theories or rumours that you just think 'maybe...' or even ones you're completely sold on.

I’ve PM’d you Bishop

Bezalelle · 19/05/2019 18:08

The "1000s of people would need to have been silenced" thing is a fallacy. Surely it's only the people at the very top who know what actually goes on.

Makes shocking reading.

Ladymargarethall · 19/05/2019 18:11

Bishop please can you PM me about the Dando theory too?

fedup21 · 19/05/2019 18:16

Bishop please can you PM me about the Dando theory too?

Me too, Bishop please if you don’t mind? Have always thought that just didn’t add up.

bebeboeuf · 19/05/2019 18:19

All the facts about the Americans landing on the moon can easily be falsified though.
Showing grainy images doesn’t really prove anything

Alternatively, the science against it is quite astounding

bebeboeuf · 19/05/2019 18:22

There’s quite a good reason to fake it also

It was the space race, the Cold War.
Things could have gone very badly if the Americans didn’t get there

ImNotNigel · 19/05/2019 18:31

I know a lot about grenfell and what notdavidtennant and cat lady say is correct.

RomanyQueen1 · 19/05/2019 18:42

My dad is no longer with us sadly, but he was never into conspiracies and a well respected Engineer for metal aircraft bits, very precise work.
he worked in simulations for all types of accident or disaster and he didn't believe it for a minute.

RomanyQueen1 · 19/05/2019 18:42

Sorry, was referring to 9/11

nooddsocksforme · 19/05/2019 18:45

bishop is it about a close friend of hers

ObvsItsNotMe · 19/05/2019 18:45

Re JD..it's not about "kitty" is it?

Pengrin · 19/05/2019 18:47

That’s an interesting link namechange.

“Operation Northwoods- A plan to create false flag acts of terrorism against US citizens in order to provoke support for a war against Cuba.”

Sounds familiar.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 19/05/2019 18:48

CTs are embraced by people who don't want to believe that chaos runs the world.

This. I've worked with some of the big organisations included in some conspiracy theories. In a way it would be nice if there was a big group of supervillains in charge, because it would mean we change them and change the world. But in reality it's just a fairly normal bunch of people, mostly moderately competent, mostly just trying to do a job that pays the bills and gets them home to do bathtime with the kids. Gossip was so rife that you couldn't even share a taxi with a member of the opposite sex without half the world knowing it, it's hard for me to believe these guys then turn all super-spy when it comes to covering up wrongdoing on a massive scale.

The problem is often more about skewed incentives, usually set up by people who are either clueless or careless but not actively evil (e.g. giving massive rewards for sales of a new drug, regardless of number of relevant local sufferers of the relevant illness, or creating a bonus scheme that pays out if there are zero accidents on a site, encouraging people to avoid reporting the small issues that often are signs of a bigger incident to come) This encourages even decent people to chase the money and ignore the facts, and genuine arses to do serious harm.
Thing is, that's a lot less exciting and soothing than a conspiracy theory.

Herland · 19/05/2019 18:53

Bloody hell Bishop I did google and what a bloody rabbit warren. Whether there is any truth in it or not, the last half hour has taught me that people will use conspiracy theories to be utterly vile human beings.

GimmeBread · 19/05/2019 18:54

@Bezalelle and @bebeboeuf - I'm mortified that I've back tracked on this. I believe in crop circles, planet seeding, we've been visited before, this isn't the first time the planet/universe has been populated by intelligent beings, etc etc.

I was absolutely determined that the moon landings happened and my DD and I have had many an argument about it but after that documentary....

origamiunicorn · 19/05/2019 18:54

I don't think JFK or Jill Dando were killed by who it was said they were killed by.

Jill Dando sounds like a contracted hit but have no idea why or who it just feels wrong.

I have no idea about JFK but it doesn't add up either. Oswald persisted he was a Patsy and then Jack Ruby killed him (conveniently) before he was due to give his side of the story in Court. Something smells rotten with the whole thing and I'm not a general conspiracy believer either.

CoolCarrie · 19/05/2019 18:55

Bishop please could you pm me as well, thanks

wheresmyhairytoe · 19/05/2019 18:57

@bishop please could you PM me re Jill Dando. I do believe she was about to expose something and was killed before she could.

I don't believe David Kelly killed himself.

I read about JK Rowling being about to expose the wizarding world so she was put under the Imperius curse and made to write Harry Potter. I don't believe it but it would be amazing if it was true 😁

wheresmyhairytoe · 19/05/2019 18:57

Wrong emoji 😊

GimmeBread · 19/05/2019 18:59

The thing with conspiracy theorists is that they are usually bloody crackpots who would normally be on the Jeremy Kyle show and you can easily dismiss them but then the respected scientist/pilot/engineer pops up and throws you for a loop and makes you question your beliefs.

BishopBrennansArse · 19/05/2019 19:00

@Herland I know, there's some nasty stuff... but I do think there's far more than Yewtree ever dealt with

BishopBrennansArse · 19/05/2019 19:02

Could all those that want pms please pm me and I'll respond, can't keep track on here. Yes a friend.

BishopBrennansArse · 19/05/2019 19:03

@ObvsItsNotMe yes

IncognitaIgnorama · 19/05/2019 19:09

Hasn't the whole "high profile paedo ring" now been largely discredited, though, particularly as "Nick" is now on trial himself?
