Are there any conspiracy theories that you just think could have an element of truth?

I love all things conspiracy theory - from a psychological/social point of view it's interesting to see what makes people fearful or pessimistic.

But I often do see some conspiracy theories a bit like Urban legends in that they could be an exaggerated truth.

Are there any conspiracy theories or rumours that you just think 'maybe...' or even ones you're completely sold on.

Sort of harking back to the authority of Snopes question from earlier, I'm interested to know whether your rank or status dictate whether or not you can be accused of being a conspiracy theorist.

We often hear government claims that the Chinese/Russian/other governments are generally up to no good. Obviously, they may have 'intelligence' (which could be proven, merely suspected or even fabricated, for all we ordinary people know) on certain matters, but there seem to be so many kneejerk proclamations.

The cases of poisonings of Russian citizens on British soil are instantly ascribed to the Russian government long before any evidence has been examined or any inquiries instigated. Surely these are also conspiracy theories (arguably verging on paranoia), with all the loaded assumptions that come with that term, aren't they?

Whatever people do or don't believe regarding 9/11, Bin Laden was instantly blamed for it by GWB. If this knowledge was based on sound, sure intelligence - and demonstrably not just a conspiracy theory that he'd seized on - doesn't that then beg the question as to why nothing was done beforehand to ensure that it could never possibly happen? Security lockdown or even pre-emptive strikes on OBL, maybe. If we can drop bombs on Syrian children on a similar premise, why not on somebody assuredly 'known' to be planning atrocities?

If there is foreknowledge, but it isn't acted upon until after the event, that could only serve to cause some people to see that as clear evidence of a big conspiracy.

Lweji · 24/05/2019 10:56

It wasn't just the US government that blamed Osama Bin Laden.
Different Intelligence Agencies linked the attacks with Al Qaeda agents or leaders at the time.

Can someone just explain why people would believe the world is flat?! And what would be the point in us all being lied to, into thinking the world is round?!

It's one conspiracy theory I just can not handle!!
Anybody that believes the world is flat, imo is bonkers!!

Herland · 24/05/2019 11:33

Absolutely re Catholic Church - much deserved hatred and criticism. But there are still conspiracy theories attached to it. Dan Brown (and Tom Hanks 😂) are very well off thanks to them.

Herland · 24/05/2019 11:34

Happiness, I'm the same. It's a conspiracy theory I just can't get my head around. Who's purpose does it serve to spend billions of £ or $ pretending the world is a sphere?

IABUQueen · 24/05/2019 11:46

I know this wasn’t the point of your post, but I hope you don’t think that “we can drop bombs on Syrian children on a similar premises” is a gold standard to how everything else should be handled.

I’m Levantian, btw. I know I missed your point, but please don’t normalize “drop bombs on Syrian children”... that’s more important to me than the point you are making.

Firstimpressionsofearth · 24/05/2019 13:27

It's got a religious basis. We are actually on a flat earth contained within a closed area. If you believe that, you believe that the system was created. Therefore you believe in a god. Where does it talk about god, a flat earth, the firmiment.....the Bible.

The world is run by Satanists using science to make us believe the world is round to hide god. We then become sinners.

origamiunicorn · 24/05/2019 13:38

I don't understand the flat world thing. Do they think the moon and sun are flat too and just happen to always show the flat disc side not the thin edge? Or is this theory just for the Earth? 😆

You don't need to be a Satanist to go on a plane and see the curvature of the Earth for yourself or is everyone lying, including all astronauts 😂

Apologies if I inadvertently caused any offence with my wording. I believe it's absolutely abhorrent to drop bombs on any innocent people, especially defenceless children. I'm utterly disgusted with the authorities thinking that it's in any way acceptable to indiscriminately slaughter people in this way. I feel the same about Hiroshima and Nagasaki - I don't see how our leaders can ever claim the moral high ground whilst they believe these actions to be justified.

My point was a (maybe badly worded) attempt to question why we can willingly commit such murderous evil in the name of trying to punish a miscreant country's leader and yet we obviously weren't willing to do this to a stated known terrorist, when this could presumably have completely prevented an anticipated atrocity.

If the security services knew in advance what OBL was planning, why couldn't they have stormed in and taken him out originally in the way we're told that they did in 2011? If they didn't have the intelligence, how come the western leaders all instantly knew whom to blame?

For the record, I'm not even in favour of dropping bombs on people who are categorically proven to be guilty, unless they cannot be captured and brought to justice any other way.

It doesn't work that way.

The US were warned that Al Qaeda was up to something, IIRC, but didn't pay enough attention to it, as it passed from the Clinton to the new Bush Administration. I thoroughly recommend you watch a recent movie "Vice" about Dick Cheney. A mix between a comedy and a documentary. Very good.
Nobody even imagined they'd be prepared to use planes as weapons.

They identified the culprits fairly quickly because it's easier to solve crimes than to predict who will commit them. It's a well recognised phenomenon.

This only happens on telly.

And they thought he could be planning something but nothing was known with certainty.

They didn't know instantly. The attackers made zero effort to cover their tracks. The airline tickets were all bought in their real names. one of them left his passport in his car in the airport parking lot. So everything was confirmed fairly quickly.

Whatever people do or don't believe regarding 9/11, Bin Laden was instantly blamed for it by GWB.

Nope, it was the FBI who blamed Bin Laden and it was two weeks after the attack.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Responsibility_for_the_September_11_attacks

^Two weeks after the September 11 attacks, the Federal Bureau of Investigation connected the hijackers to al-Qaeda...The FBI investigation into the attacks, codenamed operation PENTTBOM, was able to identify the 19 hijackers within days, as they made little effort to conceal their names on flight, credit card, and other records.[6] By checking flight manifests and comparing them with other information, like watch lists, customs officials were able to find the names of all 19 hijackers quickly.

Passengers and crew aboard the flights provided information about the hijackers while the hijacking was in progress. Two flight attendants on American Airlines Flight 11, Betty Ong and Madeline Amy Sweeney, contacted airline personnel on the ground. Sweeney provided the seat numbers of the hijackers, and descriptions of the men, identifying Mohamed Atta as one of the hijackers.[7][8][9] A flight attendant on United Airlines Flight 175 called a United Airlines mechanic and reported that hijackers had killed the crew.[9] While the hijacking was in progress on American Airlines Flight 77, several passengers, including a flight attendant, Renee May, contacted and reported details of the hijacking to persons on the ground.[10] Sales clerks identified two individuals to whom they sold tickets on Flight 77 as the hijackers Hani Hanjour and Majed Moqed.[9] During the hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93, Jeremy Glick identified the hijackers as Arabic-looking and carrying box-cutters.[11]

Mohamed Atta's luggage did not make the connection from his Portland flight to American Airlines Flight 11. In his suitcase, authorities found a handwritten letter in Arabic. As well, a handwritten letter was found at the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and another in Hazmi's vehicle.[12] When examining Mohamed Atta's left-behind luggage, the FBI found important clues about the hijackers and their plans. Atta's luggage contained instructional videotapes for flying large aircraft, a fuel consumption calculator, and a flight plan, along with a copy of the Quran.[13] His luggage also contained papers that revealed the identity of all 19 hijackers, along with a copy of Atta's last will and testament.[14] The passport of hijacker Abdulaziz Alomari was also found in Mohamed Atta's left-behind luggage.

Various items of evidence were found in vehicles left behind at the airports, in luggage that did not make it onto the flights, and at the crash scenes. A rental car belonging to the hijackers was found at Boston's Logan International Airport, which contained an Arabic language flight manual and documents from Huffman Aviation in Florida. There, investigators were able to find Mohamed Atta and Marwan al-Shehhi's previous address in Hamburg, Germany.[15] Nawaf al-Hazmi's 1988 blue Toyota Corolla was found on September 12 in Dulles International Airport's hourly parking lot. Inside the vehicle, authorities found a letter written by Mohamed Atta, maps of Washington, D.C., and New York City, a cashier's check made out to a Phoenix flight school, four drawings of a Boeing 757 cockpit, a box cutter-type knife, and a page with notes and phone numbers.[16]

In New York City, a passport belonging to Satam al-Suqami was found by a passerby before the towers collapsed, and given to a NYPD detective.[17][18] The passports of two of the hijackers of Flight 93 were also found intact at the crash site.

On September 27, 2001, the FBI released photos of the 19 hijackers, along with information about the possible nationalities and aliases of many.[19] ^

FunInTheSun2019 · 24/05/2019 16:42

@Firstimpressionsofearth is that your belief?

Firstimpressionsofearth · 24/05/2019 17:25

@FunInTheSun2019

No I'm not a flat earther, just explaining the basis for it.

Also according to flat earth theory, the plane windows are curved to make the horizon look curved.

There's actually a doc on Netflix and they do a laser test to prove its flat. It doesn't work and proves the curve but the flat earthers are not deterred. It shows how set in their beliefs they are.

Firstimpressionsofearth · 24/05/2019 17:33

Disclaimer - my username is nothing to do with flat earth. It's an album name.

FunInTheSun2019 · 24/05/2019 17:59

It just boggles my mind completely that people can believe the world is flat!
Obviously they must believe the world ends at some point..do we just fall off when we get to the end?
I just can not believe people could honestly believe this one!
I don't think I could ever possibly be friends with a 'flat earth believer' I would never believe anything they ever told me!

Firstimpressionsofearth · 24/05/2019 18:04

They think the Antarctic is the edge. So we're in the centre of the circle, Australia in the outer part and then the Antarctic runs round the edge stopping you from getting out.

It's basically a cage made by god for us to live in.

Some people go even further and say this is all a simulation.

Tbh after seeing vanilla sky I have often suspected I'm in a lucid dream. 😀

cheesenpickles · 24/05/2019 18:53

I'm a pretty reasonable person and while I love a conspiracy theory I tend to think most are absolute tosh. However, I don't believe the moon landings happened and my grandad "picked up" one of the astronauts allegedly (Canadian Navy) when they landed (not entirely sure how accurate that family legend is!) Just feels like it was a propaganda exercise.

cheesenpickles · 24/05/2019 18:57

I heard that on the eve of Pearl Harbour, Churchill knew and danced in the garden of No 10 in his pyjamas singing "we're going to win". Confused

MissConductUS · 24/05/2019 20:39

I'm afraid he was pulling your leg. All of the recovery ships were US Navy.

FunInTheSun2019 · 24/05/2019 21:12

@Firstimpressionsofearth 😂

It's just so frustrating that people can believe this?!

What do they think of the moon?
We can see the moon is a sphere?

Sorry you have now become my teacher 😂

cheesenpickles · 24/05/2019 23:22

@MissConductUS lol thought that it may be a family myth (never met him myself)

cheesenpickles · 24/05/2019 23:25

@MissConductUS he did tell my dad's aunt that he got his medals for taking out the trash and washing the car tbf Grin

NotBadConsidering · 24/05/2019 23:55

Cheesenpickles To rip of the Mitchell and Webb sketch regarding the moon landings, what about the massive rocket that everyone saw blast off from Florida in July 1969? It was the most expensive and difficult bit, once you get up into space, why not just go to the moon?

Firstimpressionsofearth · 25/05/2019 01:45

Not sure what flat earthers think of the moon. I know they think it's all "intelligent" design. They have videos that they think proves the moon and sun rotate over the flat disc earth.

Firstimpressionsofearth · 25/05/2019 01:47

I've heard the explanation that the Apollo astronauts just went onto earth's orbit.
