Are there any conspiracy theories that you just think could have an element of truth?

I love all things conspiracy theory - from a psychological/social point of view it's interesting to see what makes people fearful or pessimistic.

But I often do see some conspiracy theories a bit like Urban legends in that they could be an exaggerated truth.

Are there any conspiracy theories or rumours that you just think 'maybe...' or even ones you're completely sold on.

Osama bin Laden was 'found' living 800m from Pakistan's largest military base. I totally believe that he was on the CIA payroll the whole time making agitprop videos for them.My aunt and uncle used to train Afghanis in the 80s - the whole thing (9/11, holocaust etc) is stinking like a kettle of fish. That's not today they didn't happen (they did because we fought it!!) - it's just that the level of collaboration and plotting by some big powerbrokers is on an absolutely devastating scale. That Sneha Phillips who went missing the night prior to 9/11- she probably saw something .

Re: Diana. I do wonder why she wasn't wearing a seatbelt though, given that every other photo of her in cars she always wore one... even when in full evening dress. Its little things like that that make people start to question the bigger stuff perhaps?

MyBlueMoonbeam · 20/05/2019 11:33

9 11..don't believe it for one second. I'm convinced the US government were the ones behind it.

@FunInTheSun2019 - expound please 🙄

Lweji · 20/05/2019 11:34

I find the notion that the earth is flat highly ridiculous but I wouldn’t call the people questioning it stupid.

The problem is not that people question it. Is people deciding it's flat and fitting whatever to fit their belief.
The same for other conspiracy theories.
If you decide 9/11 was a conspiracy and then interpret every detail as confirmation and reject anything that doesn't fit the theory, then it's not a very intelligent thing to do.

Conspiracy theorists, IME, don't question. Just like being contrary.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 20/05/2019 11:35

Actually don't - you'd only be spouting garbage

MyBlueMoonbeam · 20/05/2019 11:36

That was for FunInTheSun2019

@ScruffbagsRUs that's awful and wouldn't surprise me - I'm sure it's not too much of a stretch to assume governments wouldn't readily give a cure that's more than 50% effective because with the rising population, the planet would be deemed unsustainable.

@Alicesweewonders That's heart breaking but I can see there certainly being somewhere organised higher ups can abuse children. Not sure about an island though.

I understand why some would be really upset about saying 9/11 was an inside job but the thing is this doesn't take away from the catastrophe that took place it just disputes who is to blame. Like I mentioned with operation Totality, if it's in their interests the US government could cover up many things. However, I believe that something more concrete would've came about if it were true.

Again a problem with someone saying you're thick/stupid etc because it's scientifically proven are assuming that these scientific findings are correct and accurate. I'm not saying they aren't - I expect most is - but if any results were to say, cause mass hysteria - it would make sense to doctor it a bit.

This makes no sense. Cancer isn't that big a killer. The problem of over population has to do more with birth rates, coupled with increased children's survival rates. In that sense, infectious diseases should be the ones that are neglected.

Like what?

NunoGoncalves · 20/05/2019 12:31

I think one of the problems with many major conspiracy theories is that the modern world is highly connected and secrecy is very difficult.

Anybody who thinks major scientific research could be hidden/manipulated by the government without anybody knowing/telling everyone has little understanding of science, tbh.

@Lweji statistics state around 38% of us will get cancer at some point of our lives. Many cancers (well, risk of developing) also become higher with age. A cure certainly seems it would make a lot more aging people live even longer. But again, it's just ideas. I'm not saying it's true - just flicking through ideas.

IRT things may want to keep shtum about. Maybe biological weapons, nanotechnology in wrong hands, increased risk of meteor contact etc. Would it help the general public to know? Not really, but may make them frenzied.

If there’s a conspiracy about cures for cancer I can imagine it comes from that they would make less money if people didn’t need to high levels of treatment being given to people now .

As much as it’s not nice to think of it as business but cancer is big business to pharmaceutical companies

bebeboeuf · 20/05/2019 13:05

Ive never thought about cancer cures and other pharmaceutical things being possible conspiracies but this was one of the links I clicked onto from the earlier proven conspiracies list posted up on this thread earlier.

Astronomy, for example, involves huge global networks of scientists (and even amateurs), there is no way any government could keep potential asteroid collisions a secret. They don't control that information.

The same is generally true of all major research fields. There are no secret government labs working on cancer cures, and if there were, they'd have to involve a very small number of people to ensure secrecy, meaning they'd be behind the research conducted by thousands of other scientists around the world receiving hundreds of millions in funding every year. There would be no way to "cover up" advances. It's just not feasible.

PaddyF0dder · 20/05/2019 13:14

All conspiracy theories are fundamentally optimistic.

They assume extraordinary competency on the part of our leaders.

In fact, scratch out “optimistic”. They’re all pathetically naive.

FunInTheSun2019 · 20/05/2019 13:16

@MyBlueMoonbeam ok I won't..it's ok for us to have different opinions..that's life. Everybody is different. But don't shoot people down and not be willing to listen, just because they have a different opinion on things to you. I don't force my views on people and will openly listen to others. That's how we learn in life.

Maybe if you took the same approach in life, you might gain more knowledge and understanding.
MN might not be the place for you, if you are not willing to listen to other posters views and opinions. That is exactly what MN is about. To believe you are always right and not listen to different opinions to your own is a very sad approach in life. I feel for you hun 💅
