True fact about yourself that no one believes

When I was at university (5 yr course with a year in industry, so 4 yrs of teaching) I never missed a single lecture, seminar, lab or tutorial. If it was on the timetable I was there. We had large contact hours (engineering degree, so about 25 hrs per week) so was quite a lot to fit in.

I’ve told this to a few people over the years when the topic comes up in conversation. No one has ever believed me, and it’s not something I can prove or disprove either way!

Anything you have done in the past that no one believes and you have no way of proving?

I now live in a remote part of Scotland, and a very quiet life it is. I look like a pleasant, late-middle age, kindly-faced lady.
However for several decades in London I combined a high-powered career in the media with a private life consisting of shed-loads of drugs and wine and unsuitable men, on Monday morning putting on my senior exec disguise and going into central London to do my job.
I was caught up in the 70s in the Siege of Balcombe Street (younger folk may have to Google), and was also kidnapped and held prisoner in a flat by a guy who picked me up in a bar near Piccadilly Circus. I also vomited into the toilet of a famous punk rocker (his taps were gold). But now? I look like someone's favourite grandma. (On the outside ....)

I was hit by a bus doing 40 miles an hour. I got up and tried to carry onto school. When I was wrestled back down and then taken to the hospital they couldn't find a bruise on me. I was proper pissed off as it was the end of term so was actually going to be a fun day!
Declan Donnelly asked me for my number and I didn't give it him. He was lovely but I prefer tall men. In hindsight perhaps I should have just given up the heels! This was in the 90s during his PJ and Duncan days btw!

That I am terrified of getting lost in a strange town/city while driving it has affected my job choices, holiday choices, who I visit and who I don’t even though I have 2 sat navs in the car I always feel that if I drive to somewhere I don’t know I’ll drop off the edge of the earth!! Weird I know!
No one would know this I am very confident, have 2 degrees, extremely reliable and capable can turn my hand to anything .... why do I have this secret fear 😢

Vodsel How did you cope with mail? I wonder how people in the same household cope with same initials eg Mr John/James Smith, Ms Amber/Amy Smith never mind same name.

manicmij · 18/05/2019 19:08

I can't ride a bike. Folk laugh at me when it comes up in conversation.

Thatnovembernight · 18/05/2019 19:11

I’m not teetotal but I often go a year or more without drinking for no particular reason other than I don’t fancy it.

ShahOfSplosh · 18/05/2019 19:15

@Rooska1 I would love to hear more about that!

WifeOfCheater · 18/05/2019 19:17

I enjoyed giving birth

Swishswish26 · 18/05/2019 19:22

Bellewhitehorses I actually have recurring nightmares this is happening to me so know how you feel. I am actually a competent driver most of the time, just not when driving in city centres or places i’ve never visited!

Mumsymumphy · 18/05/2019 19:23

20 years ago I knocked on Barbara Windsor's front door in London. She answered and we had a nice chat. She was lovely! She even offered for me to come back later so she had time to put her makeup on so we could have a photo. Gave me a signed photo instead. Lovely lady.

Tunnocks34 · 18/05/2019 19:26

I auditioned for the role of Hermione Granger as a child, and actually got called back twice to do different scenes (not with any of the Harry Potter cast unfortunately).

I like to think this means I was shortlisted considerably but probably not!

HeronLanyon · 18/05/2019 19:29

That I went to a really rough comprehensive school and had to fight arranged fights most days until I gained ‘respect’ from the bullies who realised I was a good fighter Confused I am now surrounded by people and friends who can’t really even imagine it so I don’t tend to ever say anything about it.

Rooska1 · 18/05/2019 19:34

Thanks for the funny comment. I’m a sane nurse, and yes I did see an elf. Crazy as it sounds. I was about 10 and playing outside. I looked to the right of me and an elf in green ran along the side of a building and into a hedge. His head was large and out of proportion with his body and he was about 12 inches high. No one believes me, but I know what I saw. It’s as clear in my head today as it was then.

GinUnicorn · 18/05/2019 19:35

That I appear very briefly in a relatively big film a few years back as a non speaking role in underwear. Makes me utterly cringe. Luckily it’s all of 4 seconds.

When Tom Baker was Dr Who, my neighbour was always boasting about knowing different famous people, have to be honest, I didnt believe HIM, ended up having dinner with Tom and film crew, my DD then 9 went on the film set, NO_ONE believed her!

littlemeitslyn · 18/05/2019 19:45

I've met Ozzy Osbourne

HeronLanyon · 18/05/2019 19:47

That I met Ella Fitzgerald. Actually it’s me who can’t quite believe it. Treasured treasured memory.

ChampagneCharley · 18/05/2019 19:52

People find it hard to believe that I have a law degree (did it distance learning in my 20’s before DC). I obviously don’t look the type. Grin

I’ve also never done any drugs, despite many people telling me how fantastic it is to be off your face!

Thanks @Rooska1!

Hound of the baskervilles was written about members of my family

LittleAndOften · 18/05/2019 19:58

I've never been to a popular music gig. I went to the theatre and some classical concerts as a child, but my parents have no interest in popular music at all so it wasn't part of my upbringing. I've never been in a position as an adult to go to a 'proper' gig and have that experience. I do intend to go in the future, perhaps when the dcs are older and I can justify the cash!

Cocolapew · 18/05/2019 20:01

I had a fight with Courtney Love. I won but to be fair she was totally off her face.
Me and DH decided to get married less than 3 weeks of going out together.
That I'm 5'5" for some bizarre reason people always think I'm taller. I wish was.

flowergrrl77 · 18/05/2019 20:03

@EastMidsGPs your post had me just check cause my name is quite unusual, I also appear to be the only one of my married name on the uk electoral roll. Then @TessieVanKendre posted and so I looked! Pretty sure only one in the world too!
Not quite true for maiden name though, unlike both of you!
