Mine were 54 and 58 I think (sibling had first grandchild).

I had one living grandparent when my dc were born, she was 94 when her first great grandchild was born and 65 when she became a grandparent for the first time.

Ironically the only one of my grandparents to meet her great grandchildren had her first child at 36, positively ancient in the 1940s... My grandparents on the other side were a generation younger but died decades younger sadly.

35 & 36

Younger than DH and I when we became parents!

Saga claim the average age to become grandparents is 47 which doesn't really make sense when you consider the average age to become a parent is now 33 for men and 29 for women. 30 years ago (when the current average FT parent was born) the average age to be a FTM was 27 which suggest the average age to be a grandparent would be closer to 60 unless there's some bad sampling by Saga or some strange statistical blib due to teenage parents. Thought this graph was fascinating though watching the change in birthrate at different ages over time.

Both my grandmothers had their first child at this age, in the 40s. The average age to have a first child in the 40s was 29 which was older than it was for the next 60 years. The lowest average age was 26 in the mid 70s. Our parents generation was the anomalous one, not us.
