Savoury spread?

I love marmite. I have also discovered peanut butter later in life (all those missed years...!), however I'm looking to try something different - particularly on toast, for breakfast. Can anyone recommend an alternative that I might have missed!!

Bovril.

Also Vegemite for a change.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/05/2019 15:26

DH went through the cupboards checking use by dates and binned my marmite Hmm(honestly, I'm sure nothing can live in anything so salty!). So needing a savoury fix I used some miso paste instead - it's good!Smile

longtompot · 15/05/2019 16:39

An accidental pairing I discovered a few days ago (got a bit on my slice of toast with pate as I have different topping on each slice), but tried today, pate with a thin scraping of marmalade. Really nice.

Other savory spreads.....I get in the mood every now and then for the tiny jars of sardine and tomato, beef and tomato, chicken pate.
Smoked cheese spread.
Primula.

Narya · 15/05/2019 16:43

Marmite and peanut butter together. Yum yum Yum!

Agreed! It's a game changer.

Came on to say Gentlemans Relish and tapenade but I see others have beaten me to it.

Rillettes - its like pate but nicer.

VittysCardigan · 15/05/2019 16:50

I've always wanted to try gentlemans relish - (not a euphamism) where can i buy it/where in the supermarket would i find it?

AdaColeman · 15/05/2019 17:05

Vitty Most supermarkets stock Genleman's Relish, (spiced anchovy spread). In Sainsburys it's often in the Speciality Foods Section, but ask at the Customer Service desk, they will help you.
I love it spread thinly on toast or crumpets.

DeRigueurMortis · 15/05/2019 17:18

Yep duck Rillets - heaven.

I make them myself using this recipe.

Can't do it too often as once I start tucking in I won't stop 😂

greenelephantscarf · 15/05/2019 17:20

vegetarian pate
herb cream cheese
tomato paste & pesto

SquatBetty · 15/05/2019 18:25

Yes I know you can mix Marmite and peanut butter together but Marmite now actually do their own marmite flavoured peanut butter and it is THE BUSINESS

InsertNameHereish · 15/05/2019 18:31

Mushroom pate - comes in a sort of toothpaste tube

RandomWok · 15/05/2019 18:32

Bovril and peanut butter it like marmite and peanut butter but better!

AuntGertrude · 15/05/2019 18:54

Primula cheese and ham
Pease pudding
Pate with melted cheese on top

bronzesilvergold · 15/05/2019 19:06

Not a spread but savoury toast toppings I like:

  • Pilchards in tomato sauce on toast with vinegar (sounds gross tastes amazing)
  • Tuna mayo (grated cheese optional)
  • Boil an egg mash with a bit of real butter and salt then spread on top of toast
  • Egg mayo with lots of freshly ground black pepper
iklboo · 15/05/2019 19:07

@Mac47 - I love sardine & tomato paste sandwiches on white bread - with sliced pickled onion - when I'm feeling poorly. They're the best.

GabrielleNelson · 15/05/2019 19:25

It's not a good idea to remove the bones from sardines/pilchards etc as they are a really good source of calcium and they are soft and not noticeable if mashed into the rest.

Errol, I'm aghast at that story. Threw the Marmite in the bin! Shock

itdoesnttastelikechicken.com/vegan-mushroom-walnut-pate/ This is really easy to make and tastes absolutely delicious. Freezes well too.

Stravapalava · 15/05/2019 21:41

Had to come back to the thread to say Chicken Bovril. It's absolutely delicious, if quite salty. But I like that.

longwayoff · 15/05/2019 23:11

Chicken bovril??? How have I not noticed this before? Thank you, added to shopping list.

YesQueen · 15/05/2019 23:29

Seriously strong cheese spread (the vintage one), best on v well toasted crumpets
Tuna pate

catinboots99 · 16/05/2019 00:06

Salad cream on toast. Butter first.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 16/05/2019 00:18

Oh how I miss heinz toast toppers.. They were my absolute favourite comfort food and I'm still quite devastated that they were discontinued 😭

SpoonBlender · 16/05/2019 00:53

Does anyone know if there is any peanut butter with chilis on the market currently? I used to get some about a decade ago - it was crunchy with coconut and chili - and it was utter heaven. Can't find any now. There's some weaksauce Biona smooth stuff but it's crap.

longtompot · 16/05/2019 10:17

Sainsburys and Tesco used to do a gorgeous mushroom pate. I must see if they still do. Delish on crusty white bread.

VittysCardigan · 16/05/2019 16:31

Thank you Ada

SpoonBlender · 16/05/2019 16:50

@YesQueen I love you and I want to have your children.
I've ordered from Firefoods; I can't seem to find an internet vendor who stocks Sinful - I'll email them and ask them to update their list, it's not right!
