Heard a massive bang in my house but can’t work out what it was.

I only moved here a few weeks ago. I was in the bathroom which is downstairs and heard a massive bang like something exploded or something really heavy fell. part of the bathroom is in original house and part is in a ground level extension so no rooms above it. Next to it is a small room with hot water tank, washing machine, heating pipes. None of which were on. Other side is the kitchen. Nothing switched on there either. I’ve gone round the whole house and can’t see anything out of place or evidence of any “explosion”. Starting to worry there has been some sort of hidden pipe burst somewhere. Is that even possible?

It was your ironing board falling over

ExpletiveDelighted · 13/05/2019 10:42

That happened to us a while ago. Found a football in the garden and a round splodge mark on the living room window, someone must have kicked it at the house.

FaithInfinity · 13/05/2019 10:43

My experiences like this have either been a bird flying into the window or one time it was my freezer (it was sitting on the cable!).

MustardScreams · 13/05/2019 10:44

Saucepans falling over in the cupboard? Mine once did that and I thought a bomb had gone off, couldn’t work out what had happened for ages.

gamerwidow · 13/05/2019 10:45

If it doesn’t happen again don’t worry about it but if it does check your wiring.
In my old house every so often we’d hear a massive bang. It turned out to be a live wire loose in the chimney which was just flapping about and discharging when it hit the side. Could have been really nasty.

Open the door to your pantry, I had this when I mixed two bottles of different olive oils once, massive explosion, glass everywhere. Or at least I assume the mixing caused it to shatter, can't think why else it did!

CitadelsofScience · 13/05/2019 10:47

It's always been a huge, idiotic bird flying in to my window when that's happened. They can make a hell of a thump when they hit glass at speed.

AgentPeggyCarter · 13/05/2019 10:50

When that happened to me it was a bird hitting the window.

Lunde · 13/05/2019 10:51

Some of the ones I have had
Bird flying into widow - makes a huge band
Something falling in a cupboard
Branch or tree falling
Branches banging against house wall
Football

Another vote for birds. Have you got any weird splodges on your windows?

Shock who’d have thought that could happen!!

So I’ve checked my oils, my pots, my ironing board and my windows for football shaped splodges and nothing. Can’t see any birds needing help (or a funeral) is it likely a bird would crash and then be okay and fly off? My neighbour has pigeons which he exercises every evening. I’m now wondering if he could have had a missing bird that’s hit my window and then gone on home?

When that happened at my house, next door’s chimney had fallen over, knocking a great hole in my roof and bedroom ceiling.

fromthefloorboardsup · 13/05/2019 10:58

Mine was a loft hatch falling open. Scared the life out of me!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 13/05/2019 10:59

Well all the ceilings are still intact as far as I can see.

I’m thinking there might be a dizzy pigeon in my garden somewhere.

bit of chimney falling onto roof, check outside (voice of experience).

stucknoue · 13/05/2019 11:01

Pigeons fly into the glass at work all the time, mostly they survive but it sounds really loud

bloodywhitecat · 13/05/2019 11:01

Mine was a sonic boom, scared the hell out of me, but if it had been one of them every neighbour in the street would probably be outside looking around to see what made the noise.

NoSauce · 13/05/2019 11:04

Was your TV on? When I have my surround sound on my tv, my speakers make a horrible banging sound, just one loud bang that at first sounded like someone throwing a brick at the window! We all would jump out of our skin! Long shot I know but thought I’d ask.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 13/05/2019 11:04

No-one else outside looking at the sky. Just me looking like a weirdo studying the chimneys Grin

TV was on but I don’t know if I have surround sound? Do all TVs have them?

Was your oven on? Sometimes one of my baking trays unwarps in the heat with a huge bang, it always scares the bejesus out of me.

Or bird hitting window is my other bet.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 13/05/2019 11:09

No oven on. I’ve experience the baking tray warp bang too! Grin This was far louder.

OP posts:
NoSauce · 13/05/2019 11:11

It’s only when the sound is connected through the speaker that it happens. It’s a massive one off noise.

YesQueen · 13/05/2019 11:15

Mine was a plastic washing up brush exploding BlushShock
