Heard a massive bang in my house but can’t work out what it was.

I only moved here a few weeks ago. I was in the bathroom which is downstairs and heard a massive bang like something exploded or something really heavy fell. part of the bathroom is in original house and part is in a ground level extension so no rooms above it. Next to it is a small room with hot water tank, washing machine, heating pipes. None of which were on. Other side is the kitchen. Nothing switched on there either. I’ve gone round the whole house and can’t see anything out of place or evidence of any “explosion”. Starting to worry there has been some sort of hidden pipe burst somewhere. Is that even possible?

If it was a pigeon you shoud be able to see a faint outline on the window. They leave "dust" behind when they hit a window bitter experience. If you weren't already in the bathroom I would have suggested something falling off the wall into the bath!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 13/05/2019 11:23

I cant see any pigeon-like outlines. Although the windows aren’t exactly spotless anyway Blush haven’t sorted a window cleaner yet! I’ve had a good hunt around the yard and garden and can’t see any birds.

We moved into a new house once and at 5am thought there had been an explosion. It was the back boiler. It had been fitted with pipes too narrow or something so every time the heating kicked in BOOM! Frightened us to death and cost us a fortune to change.

Papergirl1968 · 13/05/2019 11:27

I hear a Big Bang (no idea why the iPad has capped that up) from the pipes sometimes, especially if water is running, washing machine on or something.
Have just got used to it now.

HollowTalk · 13/05/2019 11:31

I know it sounds obvious but you didn't have an opened window and a door slamming in the breeze?

YesQueen · 13/05/2019 11:32

@ILoveMaxiBondi it was one of those you fill with washing up liquid. It was just sat on the side and exploded, scared me!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 13/05/2019 11:37

yesQueen that’s mad! Was it sitting in sunlight?

Windows are opened but no doors slammed. They’re all open like I left them.

@ILoveMaxiBondi nope! It was the middle of the night Blush I leapt out of bed as it woke me up

ILoveMaxiBondi · 13/05/2019 11:45

That’s terrifying! I’d have been too scared to go and investigate in the middle of the night Grin

Last time this happened to me it turned out one of the resident idiots cats had tried to jump onto a picture on the wall and had brought it crashing down to the ground. As it was behind a table i couldn’t identify the noise for ages.

LikeARedBalloon · 13/05/2019 12:02

Do you have a flat roof on your extension? Ours makes a banging and cracking noise as it's heats up and cools down during the day. Made me jump when I first heard it!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 13/05/2019 12:08

No it’s a pitched roof on the extension. I’ve even looked in the guttering to see if a bird has rolled down the roof into it. Nothing.

Do you have anything with a sucker anywhere? We have a bluetooth radio in the shower and it always shits me up when the sucker becomes unsucked and falls and hits the shower floor.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 13/05/2019 12:11

No suckers as far as I know. Unless one of the DC has suckered something to a window!

Lump of ice from an overflying aircraft? That happened to me but it landed in the road outside...

Stylemebabyonemoretime · 13/05/2019 12:38

Has your chimney fallen into your loft?

ThatCurlyGirl · 13/05/2019 13:04

@ILoveMaxiBondi

Tempted to change my user name to DizzyPigeon - I don't know why but that super tickled me

We've had birds bounce off the patio doors, stun themselves and fly off.
Last time there was a mysterious exploding noise, it turned out to be a balloon that was in the lounge and sun shining through the patio door heated it up until it popped.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 13/05/2019 13:09

I had that before. Often it’s birds flying into the windows. Once it was the loft hatch falling open.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 13/05/2019 13:12

Half a bottle of champagne in the fridge?

Don't just bung the cork back in the top and leave it for a day or two. Seriously, I almost had a heart attack!

amusedbush · 13/05/2019 13:12

An old bottle of ketchup exploded in our kitchen once. It sounded like a bomb had gone off and the room was dripping with the stuff - all over the walls, ceiling, and every possible surface.

I was cleaning out a cupboard last week and found another bottle that was rock solid and ready to go at any moment - clearly I should stop buying ketchup as we don't use it! Blush

Thrupennybrit · 13/05/2019 13:16

Our double glazing unit cracked with a sound like a gunshot.

Hecateh · 13/05/2019 13:16

All the above 'm in a new build house. All the floors were laid by the builder and glued and screwed and are absolutely fine. In one area that flooring had to come up and the guy who relaid it screwed but didn't glue.

It's generally a really squeaky bit of floor, drives me nuts but fitted flooring on top stops me doing anything about it.
Each time I walk on it I guess I must move some of the wood against itself. Every now and again, when I haven't walked on it for a while it moves back into place - it sounds like a gun going off. Frightened the life out of me the first few times but I am used to it now. Still makes me jump every time though. Happens every 2 to 3 days

SarahTancredi · 13/05/2019 13:19

When you say in the bathroom were you in the bath?
Had you dozed off?
The bang could have been inside your own head.
