If you're mid-late forties / early fifties, do you have much joint pain?

I'm just wondering how common this is, it's often mentioned as an issue when peri/menopausal. I'm late 40s and my mum had rheumatoid arthritis, so I'm maybe more concerned about joint pain.

I'm 46, have a few twinges in my knees. Other than that, nothing really.
I'm a bit overweight but v.fit, exercise hard 5-6 times per week. I also lift heavy weights to try to offset some of the other hazards of getting older, e.g. osteoporosis

IncrediblySadToo · 07/05/2019 20:32

Yes.

I could have written your post.

stephstrops · 07/05/2019 20:32

43 here and in the thick of (early) menopause. I suffer with awful joint paint in my knees, hips, wrists, hands and elbows. I’m out of painkiller options from my GP as nothing works. Tests for arthritis all came back clear. Physio has been no help and nor has acupuncture. It’s bloody awful to be fair.

44 and ache all over for two weeks of the month! Bones, joints and muscles. Then feel fine for the other two weeks. It’s very annoying.

DramaAlpaca · 07/05/2019 20:35

Yes, knees & fingers mainly. It's better when I eat low carb, but is sometimes troublesome enough that I need anti-inflammatories.

If your mum had RA it's worth getting a blood test if you haven't already.

Floopily · 07/05/2019 20:36

46, none at all.

Aquamarine1029 · 07/05/2019 20:36

On yes. 46 here. I have arthritis in my hands that is always annoying, and I'll get flare ups where my knuckles will swell and then it's really miserable. My knees can be a couple of twats, too. One thing for sure is that exercise really helps. Inactivity just makes joint pain worse.

Creamegghunter · 07/05/2019 20:36

Yes , I’m in chronic pain, unfortunately I’m very overweight so it’s not a surprise to me

RaininSummer · 07/05/2019 20:37

Since Christmas I have had bad joint pain at night in my hips and knees. I am very stiff in the mornings in my ankles too. I assume its linked to age and meno. I am 56. My family tend to have rheumatism and arthritis.

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 07/05/2019 20:45

Sorry this is affecting so many of us. I feel I've been complaining about minor things to the gp over the past few years (tired all the time, usual peri-meno stuff) and not really getting anywhere. Lots of blood tests, all "normal ". I haven't been tested for rheumatoid factor for a long time but I know it's a blunt instrument.
I started taking the mini pill around age 44 due to hormonal migraines and irritability. Maybe now I'm a few years older I should talk about hrt? (No hot flashes etc)

Do not assume hip pain is joint related - says a long term sufferer (and previous marathon runner!) of trochanteric bursitis

FiremanKing · 07/05/2019 20:47

In my fifties. No joint pain at all but if I’ve been driving a long distance my back is a bit stiff for about an hour after I get out of the car.

QueenOfTheEighthKingdom · 07/05/2019 20:48

Yep 47 here. Knees make a scrunched up crisp packet sound when I stand up and have disc degeneration in my back.

I have been inactive for the last few months as the only time I'm completely pain free is when sitting down but the inactivity made the pain much worse when I had to get up so I forced myself to return to the gym recently and have noticed improvement in the pain from my back already. At least I can turn over in bed without the pain waking me up. Just ordered some turmeric capsules as well.

The pain was a great motivator to make me get moving!

TheCanterburyWhales · 07/05/2019 20:49

53 and over the menopause but yep, over the last five years or so I've developed swollen finger joints (mum, aunt, gran all developed rheumatoid arthritis so I'm just putting off the dx tbh) if I eat too many oranges or tomatoes my wrists and ankles hurt. My knees swell and ache and fill with a watery cushion behind the kneecap, I do the "oooof" thing getting up, sitting down and occasionally get stuck in my admittedly deep bath because my knees and ankles just won't let me up.
About twice a week I have creaking and clicking cervical neck pain as well.
Life's a beach to be sure!

tomtom1999xx · 07/05/2019 20:52

56 here & have been suffering from severe back pain for a about 4 years.
Was fit as a fiddle until I hit 50.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 07/05/2019 21:03

Early 50s and aches, pains and stiffness galore Sad

My fingers and particularly the joint at the base of my thumb hurt most of the time - an Xray has shown "wear and tear arthritis" in some of the finger joints.

My knees hurt frequently.

Other bits of me take it in turns to hurt ...currently it's my elbow, prior to that it was my foot (joint at the base of my second toe) and prior to that my hip (bursitis) and my wrist before that.

Haggisfish · 07/05/2019 21:04

I did but was tested for vitamin d deficiency and was ridiculously low. Vit d supplements really helped.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 07/05/2019 21:07

I'm almost 44 and have suspected I'm peri menopausal ( a little early I guess ) . I've been having aches and pains recently! Not overweight but do a desk job so probably need to move around and loosen up more . My ankle bothers me some days . Who knew it was a thing ?!

scaryteacher · 07/05/2019 21:08

Elbows hurt a lot, and it's hard to lift a shopping bag at times. Fingers can hurt at times too, and my back has been buggered for decades. I'm 53.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 07/05/2019 21:14

I used to have epic back pain, with accompanying hip pain and sciatica.

But I see a physio regularly and do my exercises religiously, every single bloody day. I get very little joint pain now. The physio's ministrations can be eye-wateringly painful, but are totally worth it for the next 4-6 weeks till I get beaten up by her again. My knees sometimes do the crisp-packet thing, but the physio sorts that out too.

I think that without the physio, I would be an old crock and drugged to the eyeballs by now.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 07/05/2019 21:14

52 and no aches and pains just a spare stone

PickAChew · 07/05/2019 21:16

I usually feel like I've been trampled by elephants, but I have joint hypermobility syndrome and a lot of accumulated joint damage, as a result.

MajesticWhine · 07/05/2019 21:21

I'm 48 - my finger joints are the only ones that cause me any bother, just occasionally rather than all the time.

LakeFlyPie · 07/05/2019 21:27

I'm 45 and am doing more exercise (cardio and weights) than when I was younger. Definitely feel fitter and stronger than ever before. Could do with shedding a stone, possibly 2, which I'm currently working on. Feel a bit fearful of it all falling apart at 50 but am doing all I can to be as well as possible as middle age sets in Shock

MillicentMartha · 07/05/2019 21:28

53, back pain often and recently some knee pain. I feel very stiff first thing in the morning which wears off fairly quickly. I am overweight, though.
