If you're mid-late forties / early fifties, do you have much joint pain?

I'm just wondering how common this is, it's often mentioned as an issue when peri/menopausal. I'm late 40s and my mum had rheumatoid arthritis, so I'm maybe more concerned about joint pain.

Yes. I’m mid 40’s and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis last year in my wrists, fingers, neck and from the way I’ve been feeling the last few weeks I think it’s is also now in my feet, knees and hips.

Even lifting the kettle hurts my hands and I already have lumps on my knuckles, my neck is agony and stops me sleeping. I’m just wondering how long it will be before I’m totally immobile and in a home.

Started taking high dose Vitamin D3 for mood issues, it helped my mood to some extent and as a very positive and unexpected side effect noticed that joint, particularly knee, issues were less painful and much less joint cracky

55 and until recently had only the odd twinge on my hip. However I recently got kicked by a horse and now also have a plate in my forearm and a knackered elbow. Feeling a bit sad about all that.

52 and had years of random aches and pains including debilitating plantar fasciitis, knee pain, hip pain.

7 months into HRT and I'm back running every day with no aches at all.

DustyMaiden · 07/05/2019 22:55

57 and none. I’ll consider myself lucky.

ProfOf · 07/05/2019 23:11

54 and nothing in terms of pain.

LarkDescending · 08/05/2019 06:43

At 50, and hypermobile, I am counting myself lucky not to be suffering like many of you (yet?). I’ll feel a bit stiff if I do lots of heavy work in the garden, and am not as quick as I used to be on the tennis court, but that’s about it.

WitsEnding · 08/05/2019 06:49

Older than that ...occasional hip discomfort in my late fifties but this turned out to be exercise related. If I can keep my posture correct I don't get it. I also suffered from stress (MH) and joints would stiffen from the tension.
I'm one of the lucky ones with no real problems.

chocolategivesmehives · 08/05/2019 06:51

Yup. It was a combination of joint pain, between 30 and 40 hot flushes a day and extreme tiredness that made me start HRT. It helped hugely, except now the sodding HRT I’m on is unavailable and I’m on the hunt for a good replacement.

I always sit on the floor at home, and I got to the stage where I couldn’t get down on the floor, and if I finally managed it, then couldn’t get back up again! Am back to sitting on floor again now.

AuntieMarys · 08/05/2019 06:53

60 here and much better since I started weights earlier this year.

MaudesMum · 08/05/2019 08:01

58 here, so well through the menopause, and have had osteoarthritis in hands (now wrists) since before the menopause. Other than that moderately ok - a bit of back pain at the start of the gardening season, and a currently dodgy knee which I need to get sorted. I'd really recommend pilates as a way of keeping yourself supple and strong. I went back to it a couple of years ago after many years off and feel a lot better for it. A good teacher will take account of all your problems and ensure that exercises help them or work round them.

Theghosttrain · 08/05/2019 08:08

Yes here too. To add to it, I have multi level disc degeneration. Joint pain has got worse since coming off HRT (mid 50s) but on balance I've decided against continuing with it. Walking does help with the pain so am trying to do plenty of that.

IncrediblySadToo · 08/05/2019 08:18

Whilst I’m sorry so many others are suffering too, it is a comfort to feel less alone with it.

I’m going to make a Drs apt to get my keg looked at and ask her to do some bloods as well. After that I’ll try taking the Vit D & magnesium I bought...see if that helps more than having it in the cupboard 😖🙄

I really don’t want to take HRT, but I’ll reconsider if nothing else helps.

IncrediblySadToo · 08/05/2019 08:23

Walking makes me feel better (mentally & for general fitness level as well as blood pressure etc) but my knee/ankle went from being swollen to tennis ball size to practically bursting. They were so swollen the skin hurt. After 6 weeks of just daily activity, not going for a good walk, they’re back to tennis ball size. My knee is bad though and the last few days my whole leg has felt like a ‘dead leg’. I really need to see the Dr.

I’m a bit scared she’ll say I need an op or something. I drive for work (not just commuting) and I can’t be off for weeks on end.

bamboofibre · 08/05/2019 08:25

I do, but in old injuries (bones I broke 30 years ago ache if I go heavy on the hillwalking) can really ache. I use yoga and weight lifting to help (and ibu gel). My lower back, ow! I'm 50.

Processedpea · 08/05/2019 08:26

I have this am 49 and fit but lately my knees esp make me want to cry when I bend have hrt that I am waiting to take and I'm hoping that will help as it's awful

Mistigri · 08/05/2019 08:33

I'm mid fifties, recently post-menopausal. Normal weight, moderately active (don't have a car). No back pain. Have arthritis in one ankle due to an old injury and odd niggles in a shoulder which is probably RSI.

Recently developed intermittent pain and loss of range of movement one knee - no swelling - I suspect based on the symptoms the problem is the meniscus which might need operating.

Otherwise so far in reasonable shape ... fingers crossed.

LizzieSiddal · 08/05/2019 08:36

I’m going to make a Drs apt to get my keg looked at

I’m not sure she’ll know what to do with it Grin.

Springwalk · 08/05/2019 08:38

Yes absolutely most days - esp in the damp weather.

Springwalk · 08/05/2019 08:39

Drink lots of milk people to enrich your bones.

MondeoFan · 08/05/2019 08:40

47 here and no problems with joints.

LizzieSiddal · 08/05/2019 08:42

What if you hate milk? Makes me feel 🤢.

workerbeeinaction · 08/05/2019 08:43

I do, I'm nearly 50. Assume I'm peri menopausal as periods started getting a bit erratic over the past year or two. I get quite achey hips most days, plus a bit of back ache. My knees are a bit painful too but I injured one years ago so that's worse than the other.
Has anyone found anything that helps? I walk a lot and go to a couple of gym classes a week to try and keep fit, but I'm heavier than I'd like to be. Think I need to readdress my eating habits and shift a bit of weight!

IncrediblySadToo · 08/05/2019 08:44

Lizzie

🤣😂 neither of us seem to be able to sort the keg out! Thought tbh it’s more of a large barrel than a keg 😖. I’ll definitely be going about my LEG! 🤣

Oblomov19 · 08/05/2019 08:45

I don't have any. Late 40's, don't do any exerciseBlush. Is it common?
