If you're mid-late forties / early fifties, do you have much joint pain?

I'm just wondering how common this is, it's often mentioned as an issue when peri/menopausal. I'm late 40s and my mum had rheumatoid arthritis, so I'm maybe more concerned about joint pain.

Drink lots of milk people to enrich your bones.

Joints arent the same as bones. If you want to support your joints, then you need to help the cartilage in the joints, not the bones.
The best thing for that is bone broth....

46 here and no periods for nearly a year. Ankles a bit achey and back. It’s depressing really - I went to buy some vitamins for menopausal women yesterday but was confused by all the choice so came away with nothing Grin Any suggestions??

IncrediblySadToo · 08/05/2019 08:51

Drinking milk does not help with joint pains, nor bones.

But it would be good if this thread isn’t derailed by debating that. Someone could start a thread about that if they want to discuss it 😊

Late 50's and no joint pain whatsoever. DM is in her 80's with none either

Iwouldratherbemuckingout · 08/05/2019 08:57

I'm 51. No menopause as yet but I had my left hip replaced Sept 2018 and currently recovering from my right hip replacement in April!

RuthW · 08/05/2019 09:01

I'm 50 now and get loads of joint pain. I injured my knee about two years ago and had an op on it in January. The only joints without pain are my ankles and wrists

TheColonelAdoresPuffins · 08/05/2019 09:02
  1. No joint pain, but when i get up in the morning my feet feel bruised for a while. I have to put slippers on straightaway
TheColonelAdoresPuffins · 08/05/2019 09:04

Oh just remembered i had shoulder joint pain for a while. Felt like arthritis. Seems to be easing. May be linked to being on my phone in bed

For those with a history of rhumatoid arthritis - get assessed early, as early treatment is highly recommended. Research has shown that early medication can halt (?reverse) the effects!

Personally I am in Peri-menopause on HRT, early 50's and my hand joints were painful and swollen every day, for most of the day. I had to stop doing craft work due to the painful joints, had negative blood tests for rhumatoid arthritis, but following examination and history taken by doctor, I was put on medication and now I have been able to return to doing crafts. Other joints such as my knees and elbows have also have less aches and pains since taking the medication.

I would say if you are getting painful joints to check out the reason - if it is standard wear and tear arthritis, there might be not much that you can do other than keep moving and taking painkillers. But if there are other causes - these might be able to be treated!

I'm 47 and aches and pains after definitely worse since age 45. Periods are regular but accompanied by much more pain and emotional swing than previously. Knees crunch when climbing stairs but don't hurt. In the morning I go down the stairs "left together left together" rather than "left right left right" because everything from toes to hips complain until I get going. Left hip, left elbow, left hand, left fingers, all troublesome despite being right handed. I put it down to years of driving old cars. It certainly isn't sport related. Grin

I was suffering bad back and knee pain until I started yoga which I do for 1 hour three times a week and for 15 mins each morning when I can’t attend a class. I’m no evangelist, I don’t love my yoga practice, but I do love the impact it has. It has totally eradicated my aches and pains.

Seriously, so many people on this thread live in pain. Try yoga or other regular stretching exercise. It’s more effective than drugs (I tried all the pain killers), has no bad side effects and many positive side effects (hello waist! Nice to see you again).

WhoKnewBeefStew · 08/05/2019 09:08

I have neck pain, but this is from an old motorbike accident. My right knee is knackered too, but that’s old age I think and too many years spent sitting in an odd position on an office chair - listen to your Mum when she says not to do it

cushioncovers · 08/05/2019 09:08

49 this year. Overweight but active and yes this last two years my joints have started to ache and twinge. It's a combination of weight and age I think.
However Slimmer friends of the the same age also say their joints ache so I'd say age plays a big factor as well.

LadyKylieShagworthy · 08/05/2019 09:10

Early fifties here and pain in right hip for the last few years. It started when I took up running and has been diagnosed as trochanteric bursitis. It's a bit better after lots of physio and yoga but I still can't sleep on my right side even with a soft mattress.

Sarcelle · 08/05/2019 09:13

I have suffered foot joint problems for a sustained period (due to menopause I think) which was wearying and debilitating. I found my DH's abandoned turmeric capsules and started taking them as they are meant to be anti inflammatory. After a few days of taking them the pain went. This was in November, I still take them daily and my joint pain has not returned.

GrumpyOldMare · 08/05/2019 09:13

54 here and I have arthritis in my left knee and both hands. My ankle has a bony spur which aches at times and sacro illiac joint disfunction in my back.

The weather is damp at t he moment and I'm hurting a little.

Guess it could be worse,I can still walk and use my hands.

Bazzill · 08/05/2019 09:30

Late 40s here, had excruciating hip pain for a couple of years, plus milder aches in just about every joint. I started taking magnesium after reading a thread on here (about twitching eye muscles) all pain vanished within the week and twitching eye stopped almost immediately. I walk at least 5-6 miles a day, this week 9 miles every day, no bother.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/05/2019 09:56

I had (late fifties) until my vitamine D deficiency was corrected. After three months of high level supplements, the pains were gone - even my brain started working again Smile.
So now I take care of my vitamines and I keep moving.

3timeslucky · 08/05/2019 10:06

52 and peri-menopausal. I've had sporadic pain in my knees for a decade but in the last few months I have awful pains in my hands in the mornings and the odd twinge in one elbow. I'm not overweight and I exercise moderately. It just makes me feels so decrepit. Sigh.

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 08/05/2019 10:47

For those who take supplements, could you tell us more? The high dose vitamin D and magnesium sound promising. Do you buy the vitamin D over the counter, or is it prescribed? (I know there are different formulations). Thank you.

I am mid 50s and a lifelong exerciser, I sometimes get twinges in my knees, sometimes my ankles feel a bit funny

Hufffff · 08/05/2019 11:09

My god, with this thread I feel like I've found my people Grin Sad I am mid 50s, on HRT else I get psycho and ragey, and these days I am a constant bundle of aches and pains. My neck was first...xray showed nothing....then shoulders....nothing....then hips...repeat - and at other random times I can throw in elbow or finger pain too. I also have an almost constant low level headache, painful pins and needles, low energy and unsurprisingly I am a bit on the down side. Can't face exercise for fear of making something else hurt. I have just started large doses of vit D after a thread I read on here recently said vit d deficiency symptoms can be like this.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/05/2019 11:15

My vitamine D was prescibed (as part of my thyroid problem management) and contained K as well, because I am past menopause. Now I just take a dose recommended by my GP to keep levels up. Not enough sun for large parts of the year.

sugarbum · 08/05/2019 11:33

Im 44, nearly 45. I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees when I was 32. They can go from not bothering me at all, to deep pain (no apparent reason, although they are worse in cold/damp conditions - oh and when I dance in high heels, which I don't do any more, after waking up in agonising pain after a drunken night about 5 years ago) They make a nasty grinding crunchy sound when I move. I crack a lot, but I've always done that. Use to be like gunshots in my 20's!
Currently have a hip issue. But that seems to be some damage I've done to my hip flexors rather than joints.
My thumb joints are sore when they bend, which causes me trouble writing - not that I do much these days, its all on the pc (I test software) I also have weird knobbly bits on them, which weren't there before. Docs are unconcerned.

romany4 · 08/05/2019 11:38

Yes. Peri-menopausal, I'm 47

Hips, ankles and knees. Always aching. But they've all had injuries when I was younger. I do Pilates which helps
