How did you come up with your cats name?

Just that really! Our kitten is due to join us in a few weeks time and we can't agree on a name for him!! So, how did you come up with yours, was it a flash of inspiration? A character in your favourite book/tv show etc? We're struggling!

Leroy was named by the lady who rescued him. It's a pretty cool name for a cat, but I can't take the credit.

Previous cats were Harlequin & Columbine, also Sir Brian Bathtube. My mum had Mungojerry and still has Macavity.

Post photos and you'll get loads of ideas on here.

madeofstarlight · 06/05/2019 20:55

My cat is called Luna after the Harry Potter character. I had a list of names I really liked and it wasn't even close to being my favourite on the list but as soon as I met her in person I knew it was her name. She just really looked like a Luna.

PhannyMcNee · 06/05/2019 20:56

Ours all kept the names they came from the rescue place with. I did suggest to the dc that we rename them but no. They were adamant the cats had to keep their names!

whifflesqueak · 06/05/2019 20:58

I can’t recall how Little Potatoes got her name. It just fit.

My parent’s Siamese was names Pig in order to bring him down a peg or two. His pedigree name was obviously ridiculous. He suits it, weirdly.

bestbefore · 06/05/2019 21:00

This reminds me of Bob Mortimer on Twitter, he "sells" cats names - think they are £8 each..

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 06/05/2019 21:03

They’re all named after stars. Astronomical ones.

BallyHockeySticks · 06/05/2019 21:04

Erm, there was a baby name DH and I both liked, but it was comical when put with our surname. We knew we could never use it for a child so we used it for the cat!

Happy naming OP.

TrashPanda · 06/05/2019 21:06

Well Cat was named because she was, then the next one was smaller and so was Little-un.

Sealy was grey and looked like a seal if her ears were back.
Roffy because buggeR OFF You when she climbed the back of my dad's legs
Cilfy was my teenage sisters hilarious play on MILF because our parents didn't know what it meant.

There was also Cobo because he was a cat of black origin.

TreacherousPissFlap · 06/05/2019 21:07

TreacherousCat had a dreadful name, decided on by the rescue due to his astonishing and seemingly endless vocal gymnastics.

We changed it to something that sounded similar, a human name which actually really suits him.

When I am an eccentric old dear I shall have two cats called Cromarty and Fitzroy, my dog will obviously be called Dogger Grin

Shylo · 06/05/2019 21:07

One of my favourite comic strips is Calvin and Hobbes, about a little boy and his tiger - so when we got two kittens we named them after the strip, the stripy one being Hobbes :)

All good except it turns out my two male cats were female cats - so then they became Callie and Hobbes :)

I didn't really get a good picture of him when I was there..he was snuggling into me so much 😍 but here's the best pic I got..

With Barberouscat came up with a list of names we liked and call her them until we found one she liked (as silly as it sounds). The name she ended up with was the only one she responded to with a meow. She responded each time we called her it. It was different to her previous two names, neither of which she answered to.

Previous cat was called a range of different silly names randomly before we decided on one. She ended up being Spooky as she was terrified of everything.

sirmione16 · 06/05/2019 21:08

Whimsicot (whimsy for short. Whimsy woo if she's being cute)

It's a Pokemon, and I have a nerd of a partner. However the name is a blend of whimsical and cotton. Being a fluffy soft rag doll with huge blue eyes, it suits her down to the ground :D

ReSisterNotCister · 06/05/2019 21:08

Oops here's the pic...

Our kitten is Richmond after the cupboard goth in IT Crowd. I wanted to call him Vince Noir or Sixx but both were vetoed by dh. Other suggestions were Edgar, Krampus, Stoker or Kevin (that was dd(5)'s suggestion)

Omg I might steal whimsicot for my boy 😂

qazxc · 06/05/2019 21:10

Generally keep the name that they come with from the rescue.
If left to my own devices I usually name them something stupid as Roger and Barbara can attest.
Whatever you feel comfortable calling out in public I suppose.
The cats don't really care, they take no notice of their human minions.

ReSisterNotCister · 06/05/2019 21:12

@barberousbarbara that's similar to how Beethoven the dog was named if I remembered right 😂

IRememberSoIDo · 06/05/2019 21:13

Ours are brothers, Frasier and Niles after my favourite tv brothers lol. I never expected the names to stick but the kids loved them and the names stuck. They're eleven weeks now and so so naughty lol!

ReSisterNotCister · 06/05/2019 21:13

Oh also @sirmione16 do you have any photos of your ragdoll? Our is also a raggie 🤗

whifflesqueak · 06/05/2019 21:14

OP that is a very cute kitten.

A friend of mine has working spaniels called Adgy (short for adjustable spanner, because he’s a very useful spaniel) and Chybs which is an acronym for Come Here You Bastard. Good animal names, I think.

ReSisterNotCister · 06/05/2019 21:16

I'm loving all of your cats names btw, they are inspired!

My black cat is Murphy, after Bauhaus’ goth king Peter Murphy. My tabby cat is Mackerel, because he looks like one 😼

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 06/05/2019 21:17

Hermione and Bellatrix! Guess the book series they were taken from!

implantsandaDyson · 06/05/2019 21:18

When we got our first kitten (years ago now) we went through US states and picked one - I think it was all the rage for baby names as well Grin.

My sister named her cats after Marvel TV characters - she is currently spoiling Frank Castle and Matt Murdoch.
