ASMR

What the fuck is this horror?

I've just had gogglebox from last week (I think) on in the background and it caught my attention when noises which put me on edge started coming through. They mentioned asmr??? I've never heard of it before and after googling it I am horrified!

Weird creepy whispering and cringing and horrible mouth noises. Scrunching and rattling and all sorts of crazy shit done really close to a microphone! Why on earth would anyone think that is a good thing?
It's literally a collection of all sounds which make me want to scream and stab somebody. I could feel my blood pressure rising just looking up what it was.

I watch it regularly! Subscribed to a bunch of asmr channels on YouTube it makes me feel really calm and relaxed.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 03/05/2019 15:01

I sometimes watch videos of people getting their hair brushed, it gives me tingles along my scalp and I usually fall asleep.

Titsywoo · 03/05/2019 15:01

Lots of people find them very relaxing!

RogersVideo · 03/05/2019 15:07

I find Asmr incredibly relaxing, as do millions of other people judging from the views on many of these videos. It sounds like it's not your thing.

Beanybye · 03/05/2019 15:17

So many people experience ASMR-I think you’re the weird one of you don’t 😉

Some of it on YouTube gets a bit weird but the basic hair brushing, soft speaking is very relaxing and if you’re lucky enough to get the ‘tingle’ response then it’s a great way to destress. I’ve actually found it to have huge health benefits over the years. If they could bottle it they’d make an absolute fortune!

Hollowvictory · 03/05/2019 15:18

My dd loves watching these. Relaxing.

VanessaShanessaJenkins · 03/05/2019 15:35

You people are mad. I get a tingle. A tingle of rage.

Rain or wind or the sea I can understand people find relaxing, even though I don't. But these asmr noises are physically painful to hear.

I love ASMR.... buuuuut ....most of the videos designed as ASMR do absoutely nothing for me. All the slooooow exaggerated movements, the whispering, the mouth noises, they do anything but relax me.

I love looking at videos of people cleaning their hob, folding things, wrapping things, polishing, flicking through books etc. But they're random videos with titles like 'How to properly clean your hob' Grin and not ones actually designed for ASMR tingles.

Roomba · 03/05/2019 15:46

I can't get to sleep without it! But only certain types of asmr. The rest so nothing for me or induce rage. So maybe you've just not discovered the right 'trigger', OP Grin

3of5 · 03/05/2019 15:46

I'm with you OP - I saw the thing on Breakfast news about ASMR and the whispering put me on edge.

I'm sure lots of people find it relaxing and I can understand why - the quiet and the slower pace is a complete contrast from life.

MephistophelesApprentice · 03/05/2019 15:49

I listen to ASMR videos from Youtube.

Probably shouldn't - I get so relaxed I start to drift off.

There's this one where a Korean woman is giving an ear massage and gently whispers what a nice person you are. I almost started crying.

LadyR77 · 03/05/2019 15:50

I'm with you, OP!! It's all noises that set my teeth on edge, quite the opposite to relaxing me!

AfterSchoolWorry · 03/05/2019 15:52

I hate it. Softly whispering and all that crap gives me the rage.

BearSoFair · 03/05/2019 17:59

I HATE the whispering asmr videos. They give me the rage, completely irrationally.

But the ones that are just sounds are so relaxing. I listen to them most nights to make sure I fall asleep quickly! Not any 'wet' sounds though. Mic brushing videos are my favourite.

Drogosnextwife · 03/05/2019 18:01

Agreed OP, it's weird and annoying.

HelmutFrontbut · 03/05/2019 18:37

I love watching the head massag-y stuff ooooohhhh so relaxing! Not convinced about the tapping, what's that all about?

Titsywoo · 03/05/2019 20:17

I know it's become a "thing" now but ever since I was little I can remember feeling very relaxed and sleepy when people did things like shuffle paperwork or rustle through their pencil cases at school. That's what ASMR is. The youtube stuff is a lot of whispering and tapping which doesn't relax me but there are many many other videos which I use to fall asleep sometimes (massage, cleaning etc).

Laodamia · 03/05/2019 20:20

Same. I've always gone into a kind of trance when watching people do things like wrapping parcels or cleaning a floor.

Laodamia · 03/05/2019 20:21

Or watching people use an eraser to rub things out and then brush the eraser bits away.

Off to youtube that one...

ThursdayLastWeek · 03/05/2019 20:23

I don’t have the faintest idea what your all talking about!
What is this phenomenon?

Titsywoo · 03/05/2019 20:24

Yes that's exactly it Laodamia! A trance. I get it a lot at work which is annoying as I just want to listen to it and not do anything else. It's very distracting!

Sagradafamiliar · 03/05/2019 20:31

Am I the only one it has a, erm..quite wrong effect on? 😂

IAlmostCracked · 03/05/2019 20:38

@MephistophelesApprentice do you have a link for that one?

Titsywoo · 03/05/2019 20:40

Oh and it's not "weird". You may not like it but for lots of people it helps with anxiety, insomnia and helps them relax.

BigStripeyBastard · 03/05/2019 20:58

Bob Ross. The Joy of Painting.
I'll say no more 😁
