Best big estate car - need vast boot

BringOnTheScience · 26/04/2019 11:27

I need advice from estate car drivers please. Job & hobby require the transport of increasing amounts of bulky equipment, mostly in big crates. My hatchback permanently has the back seats down, but it's a struggle.

Which estates have the biggest boots? Width is a key factor. Low sill would be best.

Thanks!

We got a Skoda Superb estate for the boot size. Its huge and good width too. Lots are used as taxis due to the space for luggage and in the back seats.

Gizlotsmum · 26/04/2019 11:35

Kia soul?

TattiePants · 26/04/2019 11:36

I need a huge boot for my job and also for when we go camping and we have a Hyundai i40. We compared loads of cars at the time and that was by far the biggest. We'll be changing cars next year and I wouldn't hesitate to get another one.

Xiaoxiong · 26/04/2019 11:37

I think the Skoda Superb, Peugeot 308 SW and VW Passat have the biggest around in terms of volume, not sure about width though.

We have a Vauxhall Astra estate which apparently isn't that large in terms of volume but it somehow manages to fit a large dog crate plus luggage, it's kind of amazing.

Tinkletwat · 26/04/2019 11:37

Passat?

Itsagrandoldteam · 26/04/2019 11:38

Mercedes E class
Skoda superb / octavia

we have to fit 3 sets of golf clubs and 3 trolleys in our cars

What about a Ford Smax, technically not an estate but the boot is huge with the seats down.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 26/04/2019 11:41

You can completely remove the back seats in a Skoda Karoq. As in, take them out, not just fold down. Haven’t had the need to do it, but I can see that it would be a big space. The boot itself is a good size anyway. My gym kit, very padded yoga mat, picnic blanket and bag with yoga blocks etc, live in it permanently and there’s room for a large weekly shop as well. We’ve had 5 large photinia plants in it, without damaging them.

Kez200 · 26/04/2019 11:42

Our Mazda 6 Estate feels huge but I dont have anything to compare it to.

Mytholmroyd · 26/04/2019 11:43

Skoda octavia scout - huge boot*

lpchill · 26/04/2019 11:47

Skoda Octavia
Skoda superb
Ford mondeo

BikeRunSki · 26/04/2019 11:51

We’ve recevtjy graduated from a Skoda Octavia to a van (2 rows of seats). Amazing!

sazzle27 · 26/04/2019 11:56

Take a look at a Nissan nv200.. technically classed as a car but a van cross if that makes sense. Fits in car spaces perfectly, plenty of space, and option of 7 seats!

AndWhat · 26/04/2019 11:59

We have an Audi A6 estate that has the world and his wife in! The boot has a huge capacity!

randomsabreuse · 26/04/2019 12:06

Skoda Supurb, Ford Mondeo, especially if you take the foam out from around the spare wheel well.

Octavia has a big boot for otherwise less gigantic car, but is narrower.

E class apparently huge but beyond our budget.

If you don't need back seats Outlander Commercial might work.

One tip if boot is always/often full with unwieldy stuff and you need to be mobile in shit weather, keep the towing eye (if screw on) and locking wheel nut in glove box and pump under drivers seat. Can also be worth having a full sized spare in a shed/garage if you have one.

If heavy stuff in constantly keep an eye on wheel alignment and if you can get it tracked under load- makes a big difference to tyre wear. Self levelling rear suspension also nice to have!

DH's car boot is basically a jigsaw puzzle of boxes and crates thanks to his job.

DennisSkinnersMolotov · 26/04/2019 12:10

Volvo V70. HUGE.

andadietcoke · 26/04/2019 12:23

We have a Skoda Superb Estate. In terms of legroom in the back, and the bootspace, it was the biggest in its class when we bought it in 2013. It also has hooks for takeaway bags in the boot to stop them falling over, and an umbrella in the passenger door (like a Rolls Royce, obvs). Ooh and a torch built in to the boot which I keep forgetting about.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/04/2019 12:32

Mercedes E class estate - wonderful car - very big boot, and very comfortable.

MrsAmaretto · 26/04/2019 12:39

Do you have to have a car? Increasingly families round here are buying Ford vans that look like transits but still have 2 rows of seats in them, but have a proper van space at the back. Think there are called Ford Transit Custom vans. One neighbour has spent a fortune on leather seats, sound system etc. it’s surprisingly luxurious!

BringOnTheScience · 26/04/2019 12:41

Huge thanks to you all! i knew I could count on MN.

@nesssie - my hatchback is a c'eed! Grin

@randomabreuse - thank you for all the detailed advice. Jigsaw is quite correct. We call it 3d Tetris meets Jenga.

@sazzle27 - Oooh! The crew van version might be just the ticket! Smile Never heard of it before. It still has to be a family car at times, but the space looks fab in that and the sliding doors would make things easier.Thank you

Caddy maxi life 7 seater but the rear bench is removable. Absolutely huge then.

jackparlabane · 26/04/2019 12:58

A Galaxy or Sharan has loads of space with back seats folding into the floor, and they're very easy to drive as you're high up.

BikeRunSki · 26/04/2019 13:00

We have the VW Y6 Transporter van with 2 rows of seats. And loads of space for 4 bikes and camping gear!!
