Best big estate car - need vast boot

BringOnTheScience · 26/04/2019 11:27

I need advice from estate car drivers please. Job & hobby require the transport of increasing amounts of bulky equipment, mostly in big crates. My hatchback permanently has the back seats down, but it's a struggle.

Which estates have the biggest boots? Width is a key factor. Low sill would be best.

Thanks!

Another vote for the skoda superb, I love ours. Loads of boot room, and loads of leg room in the back even when 6'4" dh is driving. It's like a tardis.

We've just upgraded from a Volvo XC70 to a XC60 and I miss the big boot of the XC70, it was humongous! They don't make them anymore though so would have to be a second hand but they are reliable too

boxlikeamarchhare · 26/04/2019 13:05

I have got a Volvo V90, cavernous boot.

We had a Kia Optima estate until recently. It was massive, but you don't see many of them about.

We also had Hyundai i40 estate, which I loved, but it wasn't as big as the Kia I don't think.

sazzle27 · 26/04/2019 14:03

@BringOnTheScience it's made a big difference to us - perfect for family days out, did a bootsale the other day in it, and plenty of room for people and holiday gear! Would recommend it to anyone!
Second photo is everything folded up, but with car seats laid down boot side of the front row of seats...

Would not look back now!
Good excuse for more piles of stuff left in the car

Mondeo estate!

LoopyLu2019 · 26/04/2019 14:28

Another vote for the volvo v90!! The boot is beyond massive! I love mine. And you don't get much bigger and it's a super comfy car for long journeys (I do a lot of business miles in mine)

If you need low and long go estate, if you don't mind vertical height also look at large suvs although the latter tend to have lower volume for boots when seats are up and with parcel shelf etc.

MrsJBaptiste · 26/04/2019 15:03

Has anyone got a Dacia Logan? We're thinking about changing our car (Vauxhall Zafira) and fancy the 1.5 Logan as the boot is huge and it's so cheap 👍

Lonecatwithkitten · 26/04/2019 15:14

My DP is in the motor industry and had to say goodbye to his trusty Astra van last year. He spent hours comparing boot capacities, looking a reliability data and how well different cars hold their value.
His eventual choice was a 2014 Vauxhall insignia estate of the 'old shape'. The old shape are currently a low price, but are likely to hold their value relatively well as people forget the differences in shape/ Vauxhall launches another shape.
It's boot is massive with the seats down bigger than the Astra van.

sirmione16 · 26/04/2019 16:05

Insignia. We looked at buying a bigger car and literally couldn't find one with the same boot space. Even the sales guy was like why are you looking for something else Blush

BringOnTheScience · 26/04/2019 19:49

Thank you again everyone. Lots of ideas to look into.

It's the stacks of crates that are the main issue. I have a LOT of 48 litre Really Useful boxes. I can currently get 3 across and 2 high behind the front seats, then assorted other crates & boxes & bags behind that. I can see me taking the crates to test drives!

Vauxhall Insignia estate
Giant boot , flat to load so no silly lips to get stuff over

randomsabreuse · 26/04/2019 20:23

Take empty boxes, definitely. I used to do a sport with a bag just marginally bigger than a golf bag. Said bag always came car shopping with me!

Car wow reviews are the best car reviews for actually buying imo www.carwow.co.uk/best/best-cars-with-big-boots

LoopyLu2019 · 26/04/2019 20:58

Skoda Superb being the largest affordable estate with good reliability and features

FlaviaAlbia · 26/04/2019 21:02

We got the Cee'd SW as a small estate but if we were buying again, we'd definitely consider the Skoda superb, a friend has one and the boot is simply massive.

We've currently got a roofbox on it for camping but it's vaguely annoying being speed limited by that sometimes.

RainbowMum11 · 26/04/2019 21:04

My Hyundai i40 had a huge boot, plus I loved the car too!!

CherryPavlova · 26/04/2019 21:05

I love my Octavia. We’ve just driven across France with it fully laden for a fortnight holiday.
The boot part I said basically an extra large dog crate with dog guard, comfy ruff-tuff bed, water bowl, etc plus for this trip 12 gallons of water room the supermarket stop.
We don’t put seats flat because the dog needs his space secure but on back seats we had four giant holdalls, a Tesco non perishable shop, the fresh food and wine picked up at Carrefour. Twelve gallons of water and a couple of bags of kiln dried logs in case it’s cold.

The boot lowers too. It’s a fabulous car to drive - Ryde like my Golf. Can’t recommend it highly enough. My husband has an WC90 which isn’t a patch on the Skoda.

thenightsky · 26/04/2019 21:07

DH did a big comparison a couple of years ago as he has to move big piles of gym/martial arts mats around, plus pads, bows etc.

The Vauxhall Insignia Estate came out as having the biggest boot with the biggest opening with no annoying lips or jutting out bits to catch stuff on when you are sliding heavy boxes in.

QuestionableMouse · 26/04/2019 21:11

My Zafira has a big boot and is basically a van with the seats down. They also fold flat so the floor is smooth.

BikeRunSki · 26/04/2019 21:47

Berlingo, Kango

Beamur · 26/04/2019 21:51

Citroen Picasso or whatever C the biggest one is.
Big boot space and good fuel economy. But rather sucky in other ways.

BlackeyedPetitsPois · 26/04/2019 21:57

We have a Peugeot 308 SW and the boot is huge. Just returned from a self catering week away in the uk; we are a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 DC) and fitted 3 medium suitcases plus boots/shoes/towels etc, all our food etc for the week (1 large plastic toy box and a large cool box), and all our coats and waterproofs easily. There was room to spare too! I was stunned at how much we could fit in.

Shockers · 26/04/2019 22:15

We had Volvo V70s for years, then DH decided to go for a Range Rover Sport.

I really miss the V70. Great for the dogs; bikes on the back; Kayak on the roof (good height to get on and off); pulled the caravan well...

The RR is too high and too fucking expensively shiny to be a practical family car for us.

PickleSarnie · 26/04/2019 22:26

We have a Mercedes E Class. Boot is utterly massive.

The older style (pre 2016) was slightly larger because it was a bit boxier. But the post 2016 model is still massive. I love it.

Skoda Superb is also v cavernous.
