Wtf is this shit?

"87,866 Supporters
BBC to sack Chris Packham
As an employee of the BBC, Chris Packham should remain impartial and keep his views and beliefs to himself however, he is the face of many anti hunting campaigns and uses his celeb status as a platform to push his anti hunting agenda, he has made his goal to ban all kinds of hunting, and country sports and pursuits and I feel he is no longer fit to work for the BBC"

How about David Attenborough then? From this person's logic he should also be sacked Confused

Did you see that his gate was vandalised and they strung up dead crows on his property?

Dreadful.

MikeUniformMike · 25/04/2019 20:06

Chris Packham has strong opinions and the BBC lets him air them.
I can't stand CP and switch off if he's on.

Scrowy · 25/04/2019 20:08

David Attenborough has campaigned for sensible environmental changes.

Chris Packham has used a technicality to force Natural England to stop farmers and growers from exercising sensible pest control measures to prevent damage to crops (particularly vulnerable at this time of year) and to livestock (corvids in particular are known to attack lambs and other small birds).

Even if you hate farmers/ gamekeepers they ultimately do keep Corvid numbers down. If Natural England don't get the new licenses sorted quickly it could potentially have a devastating impact on local wildlife too, particularly groundnesting birds like the curlew which is already red listed.

Anyone who actually knows anything about the environment can see how shortsighted and counterproductive this will be.

Silly man.

ihatethecold · 25/04/2019 20:09

The BBC sack no one ever.
They are the least transparent organisation and let “The Talent” get away with so much because they put the public image of the corporation before individuals.

Rant over.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/04/2019 20:10

I've only seen the petition against him being sacked and I've signed it.

you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/bbc-don-t-sack-chris-packham?bucket&fbclid=IwAR2EvDNojWzydAS0msgwWBPOBnnTKp3SVS34m50ok_tC6eAj0G43gEjFAP4

87,527 have signed so far.

MrsBertBibby · 25/04/2019 20:10

All Natural England had to do was get their house in order in stead of fighting a losing battle.

Not Packham's fault. He doesn't control Court listings.

99calmbeforethestorm · 25/04/2019 20:11

Sure the BBC should either allow people to express their views, which plenty of people do at the BBC, or not allow them.

A petition to sack someone is awful. Surely you can’t sack someone because of a petition and even if they decided they no longer wished to employ him they would just not renew his contract.

Hollowvictory · 25/04/2019 20:12

I really like him.

Squeegle · 25/04/2019 20:13

He has integrity, we need more people like him not less

PlumCakeChica · 25/04/2019 20:14

A lot of people in this country seem to have a problem with anyone standing up for our wildlife. I’m glad Chris speaks out about it, even though it appears to cost him personally.

AutumnCrow · 25/04/2019 20:15

What happened at Chris Packham's gate - stringing up dead (killed) crows - looked like the work of deranged, stupid nutters. Hardly a campaign winning image.

wigglypiggly · 25/04/2019 20:15

Many people think hunting and country pursuits should be banned if they deliberately frighten, injure or kill animals, having a petition to have someone sacked is really mean spirited

Scrowy · 25/04/2019 20:16

For what it's worth I haven't signed the petition because I don't agree he should be sacked.

I do however feel that the BBC need to be extremely careful about how strongly he is allowed to put forward his views over and above actual facts. He's entitled to his opinion but it shouldn't be put forward as the only opinion which it often is.

I'm no fan of Natural England either, they can be very draconian towards farmers over silly things, far more trivial than this, the fact that they have resisted this action as far as possible shows that they also believe that corvid numbers need to be controlled for the good of other species and food production in this country.

Every day I'm saddened by just how far removed people are becoming from where their food comes from.

hinely · 25/04/2019 20:18

I've just signed the don't sack petition too - thanks for making me aware of it CaptainMyCaptain!

MikeUniformMike · 25/04/2019 20:19

Some of his ideas are not speaking up for wildlife and would be detrimental to our native wildlife. He seems to have a special status that lets him do it.

Parttimewasteoftime · 25/04/2019 20:19

Omg he's got a valid opinion from what I seen he was very articulated in his views. He made no angry protest I am worried for my children and their children! I will boycott the BBC if he's sacked I like him.

Scrowy · 25/04/2019 20:22

I think the reason people are so angry is because it literally couldn't have happened at a worse time of year and farmers and growers have been given literally hours notice that they won't be allowed to defend crops until the new licenses are available.

I don't think people realise how serious the consequences in terms of food availability could be if it's not sorted out quickly. Pigeons and geese and pretty much decimate crops in hours.

If it had happened in winter people would have still been pissed off but there wouldn't have been this panicked and hysterical response.

I agree that much of the blame needs to be placed at NEs door for not having their house in order.

Whisky2014 · 25/04/2019 20:22

Thanks captainmycaptain!

I would not be surprised if many of the 87000 or so are people who would like the return of fox hunting. What a person puts out on their social media feed is their personal view.

One of the late 'Two Fat Ladies' was a strong campaigner against the fox hunting ban, but no-one called for her to be sacked.

SihtricsHorseWitnere · 25/04/2019 20:30

I like him. Good on him.

MaudesMum · 25/04/2019 20:31

His point of view - which he has articulated very clearly in various interviews - is that he's not a BBC employee. He is contracted by the BBC to present some programmes, and when he is presenting them he conforms to whatever requirements BBC has about impartiality. When he isn't presenting them and he is just being Chris Packham he can talk about whatever he likes, as long as he doesn't do so on behalf of the BBC. On twitter, he is also supporting Extinction Rebellion, and also veganism, but he never does so as someone from the BBC.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 25/04/2019 20:31

He doesn't control Court listings
He is one of the people who brought the challenge against the general licences forward, so is fully responsible for this. He also once called shooters 'the nasty brigade', thus alienating many farmers, all gamekeepers, all pest controllers and just about anyone with a gun licence in one go.

In other words, his part in the suspension of the general licences is not going to be viewed as a one-off by people he has already roundly insulted.

As PP have said, it couldn't have come at a worse time of year.

I didn't like the rooks being hung up on his gate, though. Totally unnecessary and not how to make your point. I haven't signed the petition either, but I have complained to Natural England. Two days warning? Seriously?

Scrowy · 25/04/2019 20:33

Can I ask how many people supporting him here have ever stood in a field of barley which is your income for the year and tried to stop hundreds of pigeons eating it?

How many of you have had to put a lamb down because a crow has pecked out its eyes, it's anus and it's tongue?

How many of you have watched as crows and gulls swoop in and eat all the concentrated feed you are giving to your sheep to keep them alive in the snow?

How many of you have found one of your two last remaining curlew nests on your farm pecked to bits by magpies.

Once you've done any of that come back and see if you can still tell me Chris Packham knows what he's talking about.

MikeUniformMike · 25/04/2019 20:34

It's not fox hunting, it's things like rewilding.
Reintroducing animals with no natural predators is going to harm native wildlife.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/04/2019 20:35

They only want CP to be sacked because he does get listened to. The crows on his gate are a typical gruesome, hunt-supporter tactic. Didn’t Liz Jones get dead animals on her doorstep when she spoke out against hunting ? Barbaric seeing those birds strung up like that. Chris speaks out against the mess that is grouse moor management too. I think he is great.
