The petition to get chris packham sacked

Whisky2014 · 25/04/2019 20:01

Wtf is this shit?

"87,866 Supporters
BBC to sack Chris Packham
As an employee of the BBC, Chris Packham should remain impartial and keep his views and beliefs to himself however, he is the face of many anti hunting campaigns and uses his celeb status as a platform to push his anti hunting agenda, he has made his goal to ban all kinds of hunting, and country sports and pursuits and I feel he is no longer fit to work for the BBC"

How about David Attenborough then? From this person's logic he should also be sacked Confused

This year we've not really been bothered but that's not the point

No that's not the point, shoot the fuckers anyway, in fact anything that moves. Ffs 🙄

indistinct · 26/04/2019 14:13

@Backinthebox - thank you for explaining the rural community anger in unemotive terms. Worth looking at the to the case [[https://www.leighday.co.uk/News/2019/April-2019/Wild-Justice-has-secured-a-landmark-victory-for-UK]] that resulted in Natural England revoking the general licenses. It seems that NE have had a knee-jerk reaction to a legal ruling rather than asking for reasonable time to implement an alternative licensing mechanism (which was apparently Wild Justice's preferred approach).

midsomermurderess · 26/04/2019 14:17

'He's a tosser'. One, of many reasons, why this rash of petitions is not only juvenile but irresponsible and obnoxious. People can decide on a whim, and with no accountability, to embark on a course of conduct which they intend to be hugely damaging to someone.
The only tosser here, miranda is you. How about spending your time doing some very much needed growing up.

Sashkin · 26/04/2019 14:20

He also once called shooters 'the nasty brigade'

Given the dead crow display, I’m not sure he was entirely wrong there was he?

EmilyBishopmyconfession · 26/04/2019 14:54

I don't necessarily agree with his views, but the campaign to get him sacked is sickening. There are other ways of going about making your voice and experiences heard.

A witchhunt which may cause someone to lose his livelihood is nothing but spiteful.

FiremanKing · 26/04/2019 15:04

EmilyBishopmyconfession

That’s kind of how I feel. He supports the climate change protestors, I certainly don’t but it’s awful that the way they’re going about shutting him up.

Did you see the dead crows they hung on his gate? Despicable behaviour.

Backinthebox · 26/04/2019 15:08

Unfortunately tempers run high on both sides of any animal debate - for every idiot who feels hanging up shot crows on CP's gate will help put their feelings across there's someone calling hounds across a dual carriageway or desecrating the graves of a scientist's parents in the name of animal rights. None of these approaches are right and in all cases a law has been broken and the perpetrators deserve to be prosecuted. Martyrs breaking the law never advances a cause, and the more rational participants in any difference will use facts, scientific research and civilised debate to get their opinions across to much better effect.

I happen to think that in the case of banning trapping and shooting of vermin species that Natural England have got it completely wrong. The most vulnerable species, among many that are on the UK's Birds Red List, is the curlew. Considerable effort has gone into researching why they are in such decline, and the RSPB has been working closely with farmers and land managers to limit the number of predators that feed on curlew eggs and young. Scientific fact and research here by the best recognised bird conservation group in the UK, if not the world, actively advocates removing bird species that predate on curlews as a necessary action for the curlew to survive. There's lots of info on [https://www.rspb.org.uk/our-work/conservation/projects/curlew-recovery-programme/the Curlew Recovery Program]] here.

While I don't think calling for CP to be sacked is either a worthwhile pursuit or even an ethical pursuit, I can't help but think he must be aware that the weight he punches as a campaigner is almost entirely down to the platform the BBC gives him to reach a bigger audience. Natural England made what is being described as a knee jerk reaction but it made the reaction as a result of some fairly heavy handed lobbying by Wild Justice, which is headed by CP.

Scrowy · 26/04/2019 15:47

The whole corvids attacking lambs thing is bullshit. They sometimes will try a newborn if it's sickly, but otherwise, statistically, a lamb is more likely to drown. What a load of crap

Can you provide a statistic/ evidence for that please as I find that extremely surprising.

In the last 10 years I can only think of 3 lambs that have died from drowning on our farm, one jumped in a small bucket of water in a freak accident and got stuck, one fell in a stream that was unusually high at the time and one fell in a water trough. I remember them all because it's so unusual for us.

I've lost count of how many lambs have been attacked by crows/ ravens/ magpies in the same period. Hundreds.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/04/2019 15:54

I am rural and although I don’t farm I come from generations of famers.
I think Chris is great. Unless we start to live with some tolerance and room for other species we are doomed.
In China they had a bird killing policy to protect crops, they ended up with a massive insect pest problem instead.

miranda1511 · 26/04/2019 16:06

He's still a tosser lol Wink

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/04/2019 16:08

Corvids and songbirds evolved together.Which makes the argument a little spurious that people are killing one to protect the other. More logical would be 'we've buggered the environment with our farming and development and domestic animals so badly that songbirds can't cope with the evolutionarily normal pressure of predation, which has always existed'.

Supremes1970 · 26/04/2019 16:29

I can't watch Packham presenting. He's pompous, smug and condescending. He might know his 'stuff' but he's not and never could be considered a successor to the irreplaceable David Attenborough - though the BBC definitely have Packham waiting in the wings. Find someone else that has a better rapport with co-presenters and the public. There's plenty of eager, fresh new faces that could do a much better job.

FoxSquadKitten · 26/04/2019 16:40

Find someone else that has a better rapport with co-presenters and the public.

I think he has great rapport with his co-presenters and the public, let's not forget he has Aspergers.

twinkletoesimnot · 26/04/2019 16:41

Scrowy is talking real sense.
A petition might not 'do' much, but the fact that we are discussing it shows that it brings the subject to people's attention.

MontStMichel · 26/04/2019 16:42

I assume that a High Court judge must have agreed that Nature England was acting unlawfully? Therefore, why should Chris Packham lose his job, when he was seeking for the law to be upheld?

As it was a judicial review, a pre action protocol letter must have been sent to Nature England - I can only guess Nature England could have offered a reasonable timetable to deal with Wild Justice’s concerns; but preferred to make them take it to the High Court in the hope Wild Justice would run out of money for the legal fees?

(Having had to seek judicial review on my DC’s behalf against my LA, for failing to do their statutory duties with regard to DC)

I shall sign the petition supporting CP, because ITA with MrsTerryPratchett; and we like CP’s presenting for his depth of knowledge of his subject!

FoxSquadKitten · 26/04/2019 16:49

we've buggered the environment with our farming and development and domestic animals so badly that songbirds can't cope with the evolutionarily normal pressure of predation, which has always existed'.

Hear hear.

There are no 'pests' in nature, every creature serves a purpose and co-exists with the others. It is humans that are the bloody pests, we've buggered up the eco-system good and proper 😡

Teacakeandalatte · 26/04/2019 16:54

I love CP he's a great role model for autistic people and a very ethical campaigner. A lot of the people who are complaining are small farmers and they hold a vested interest in controlling wildlife that may be a pest to their business and this is their traditional way of life. Fair enough and if the public want wildlife protected maybe some kind of compensation should be offered along with studying ways to prevent the pest problems without killing the animals or birds. Modern technology may offer some new methods. But its not a case that we should simply allow people to carry on doing things that damage the environment just because it is traditional and benefits their business.

BollocksToBrexit · 26/04/2019 16:57

Despicable petition trying to get him sacked. Only 16% of autistic adults in the UK work full time. Chris Packham has had to overcome huge barriers to get to where he is. He gives autistic youngsters hope. And now people want him sacked.

Crazybunnylady123 · 26/04/2019 17:20

why should the man be sacked? Give him a bloody medal!
He helps animals and birds good for him!
Who ever put those dead birds on his gate is evil. Murdering animals is evil! I don’t give a crap what anybody says! Hooray for Chris packham!!!!’

littlebillie · 26/04/2019 17:25

I don't agree with the vote or the sentiment he should be free to express opinion. But his views on cancer research are questionable

Hollowvictory · 26/04/2019 17:27

Whether you agree with Chris or not, he's entitled to stand up for what he believes in. It's his passion for wildlife and nature that puts him on the TV. Sacking him for campaigning on behalf of wild birds is ridiculous. Also he's been campaigning in bird related issues since he wS on the really wild show, it's a bit late 30 years later to tell him he can't do that any more if he wants to work on the BBC.
Everyoneat the beeb hated Bill oddie, he wax apparently obnoxious to work with. they don't feel that way about Chris.

MockerstheFeManist · 26/04/2019 17:36

Annoying? You want Annoying? Kate "Head Girl" Humble, that's annoying for you.

Chris is TV Wildlife Royalty. He co-presented with Terry Nutkins who co-presented with Johnny Morris.

....Johnny Morris. They'd be wanting his guts for garters today.

justasking111 · 26/04/2019 17:46

When I saw the dead crows I suspected an enterprising journalist/photographer. The BBC have said before that Packham is not employed by them but a freelancer, so they couldn`t sack him anyway.

Natural England have cocked up big time by not allowing a reasonable interval so that those who needed one could get the correct licence. Pest controllers in cities have lost their income overnight.

justasking111 · 26/04/2019 17:48

What about rats my friend said they have a right to life, why do we indiscriminately kill them. Because they spread disease I replied. Prove it she said. And you know what I can`t. I am only going by what I have been told since a child that rats are dirty beggars. But are they maligned?

sawyersfishbiscuits · 26/04/2019 18:08

A lot of people in this country seem to have a problem with anyone standing up for our wildlife. I’m glad Chris speaks out about it, even though it appears to cost him personally.

This with bells on! I think he's amazing.
