Please help I've fucked a trifle

Making trifle for someone as a surprise. It will be as I don't know how to make one. I got about 8 Sainsburys square-ish trifle sponges in a bowl, layered tinned fruit and syrup from said fruit on top. Made 2 pints of jelly (big bowl), left it to cool, it was a bit warm to be honest. Poured it in. Sponges floating on the top will not sink.

What did I do wrong? How can I get those sponges to sink? Bricks? So depressed this has cost me about a tenner getting all the ingredients and it already looks like a car crash with sponge.

Genuinely thought of American pie.

I think you have to soak them in booze

DishingOutDone · 25/04/2019 18:43

Arrgh - not the only one!!

At least you didn't put mince in it

Have you got any mince?

ArgusFilchsCat · 25/04/2019 18:44

Take the sponges out. Horrible gritty things! Trifle will be improved enormously! Wink

DishingOutDone · 25/04/2019 18:44

Too late! More ideas please!!

Leave the jelly to set. Then add custard on top, and no-one will notice the sponges. And yes, trifles should have custard (preferably of the solidified variety).

LIZS · 25/04/2019 18:44

As long as you add another layer it really won't matter.

Easterbunnyhashoppedoff · 25/04/2019 18:45

Gives new meaning to getting a cream pie!!

MoreSlidingDoors · 25/04/2019 18:45

Wait for the jelly to start setting. Then push them down. Simple.

beela · 25/04/2019 18:45

Just chuck a load of custard and cream over the top, it will taste delicious.

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2019 18:45

Cross posts!

Seriously though just chuck it in the fridge (or the bin because trifle is revolting). The jelly will set with the sponges in it. Who care what order the layers are in? Cover it with cream and it’ll be fine.

WeeDangerousSpike · 25/04/2019 18:45

Also thought of American pie...

The sponges need to be saturated with liquid to sink. Usual choice is sherry.

Not sure if it's fixable now OP. Si
Sorry.

moreismore · 25/04/2019 18:46

Has jelly set? If not spoon it off. Tip fruit out. Reline bowl with sponge and really soak them in something, at this point I’d go booze-dark rum maybe? Or sherry. Then fruit, then jelly again.

ShirleyAvenue · 25/04/2019 18:47

Wait for it to set then turn it upside down before adding your next layers

Sunseed · 25/04/2019 18:47

What would have worked was to pour just a bit of jelly on to cover sponge, leave it to set, then add another layer of rest of jelly.

Could you pour out most of jelly then put bowl in freezer to chill fast, then pour bulk of jelly back in. If you keep the bulk warm it shouldn't set before the bowl has.

mollyblack · 25/04/2019 18:48

Take out some of the jelly- it shouldn't be much deeper than the sponge.

DishingOutDone · 25/04/2019 18:48

Sponges are dissolving!!!! Tried weighting them down with forks, this made it worse.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 25/04/2019 18:49

That'll teach you to put jelly in a trifle.... Grin

DishingOutDone · 25/04/2019 18:49

This is definitely someone I'd like to be friends with:

Wait for it to set then turn it upside down before adding your next layers

I’m sorry op, no help but your sponge calamity has cracked me up!

DishingOutDone · 25/04/2019 18:50

I've definitely overdone it with the jelly. See I said it was fucked. I feel very deflated now. Unlike my buoyant sponges. Pity they didn't have these little feckers on the Titanic.

OP posts:
UCOinanOCG · 25/04/2019 18:52

Sounds like the ratio of sponge to jelly ratio is all wrong. You need much less jelly. The sponges need to be just covered and no more.

DishingOutDone · 25/04/2019 18:52

No spirits in the house however, I've got a bottle of wine which I will now have to drink.

Do you think I can take any sort of action against Sainsburys and their buoyancy aids sponges?

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 25/04/2019 18:54

I don't add jelly, just booze and fruit. Could you pour off the jelly into a different bowl and then wedge it back in after it sets?
