Please help I've fucked a trifle

Making trifle for someone as a surprise. It will be as I don't know how to make one. I got about 8 Sainsburys square-ish trifle sponges in a bowl, layered tinned fruit and syrup from said fruit on top. Made 2 pints of jelly (big bowl), left it to cool, it was a bit warm to be honest. Poured it in. Sponges floating on the top will not sink.

What did I do wrong? How can I get those sponges to sink? Bricks? So depressed this has cost me about a tenner getting all the ingredients and it already looks like a car crash with sponge.

Ready made custard is fine, I use it when I make one...

I do sponge fingers soaked in Prosecco (can drink the rest of the bottle whilst waiting for layers to soak, set etc!) then raspberry coulis, ready made custard, whipped cream with a bit more Prosecco in it (if I haven't drank it all by this point).... throw on some mini homemade meringues, raspberries, pomegranate seeds and crushed pistachio nuts so it looks a masterpiece!! Job done Grin

there's no place for jelly in a trifle imo. But presumably it'll set and then you can cover it with the most important layers.

SleepingIsOverrated · 25/04/2019 19:27

This post just made my day. What a lovely thing to do OP. I loved that story too, and honestly, if somebody tried to recreate it for me I promise I definitely wouldn't notice whether the sponges were floating or not! Xx

Trifle needs custard. And the sponges have to be soaked in sherry. It's not trifle otherwise!

As for jelly... it has no place in a trifle.

dontticklethetoad · 25/04/2019 19:28

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine the custard should be the same firmness as the jelly Grin

DishingOutDone · 25/04/2019 19:30

Awww just make sure the cream is whipped enough to take all the sugary bling and she will love it!

Hidingtonothing · 25/04/2019 19:32

Celebration trifle would be lovely OP, thank you Smile It's a boy and DSS is over the moon bless him, haven't seen him cry in years but he's a snotty mess Grin

Babyfoal · 25/04/2019 19:33

Bad Harry and the trifle Smile

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 25/04/2019 19:35

Can your neighbour bring hot chocolate like Mrs coco Jones?

DeadButDelicious · 25/04/2019 19:37

Trifle is amazing. I'm sure yours will taste great.

My mum makes her trifle with Swiss roll, soaked in jelly with birds custard and whipped cream. With a flake crushed up on top of it. It is amazing.

And now I want trifle. Grin

ShowOfHands · 25/04/2019 19:39

Oh I LOVED that story as a girl and wished and wished for trifle with silver balls and jelly sweets. In my head, it's jelly diamonds.

funnyoldonion · 25/04/2019 19:40

Oh phew, I misread trifle as giraffe at first Confused

Bunnylady53 · 25/04/2019 19:40

Great thread title OP!!

Kaykay06 · 25/04/2019 19:41

No jelly in trifle urgh

I make mine with cut up Swiss roll soaked in sherry or the juice from some tinned peaches, tinned fruit cocktail, Custard and cream
It’s lovely 😊 sure yours will taste good despite the distasters

Pannalash · 25/04/2019 19:42

Did the trifle give consent?

nicenewdusters · 25/04/2019 19:48

I wondered that Pannalash . Is this a reverse? Are you really the trifle OP?

RoseDog · 25/04/2019 19:49

Now I have just amended my tesco order for tomorrow to get stuff for a trifle!

Littlebelina · 25/04/2019 19:53

I want trifle now but I'm the only one who eats it, does anywhere do decent individual trifles does anyone know?

Sure it'll be great op. If not send it here!

Bethanyg25 · 25/04/2019 19:54

A layer of beef sautéed with peas and onions will do the trick

winterisstillcoming · 25/04/2019 19:57

Could you tip the jelly
Out and turn it upside down and put
It back on the same dish?

Or just take it out and put the custard in the bottom and call it upside down?

ourkidmolly · 25/04/2019 20:02

I don't have any advice about trifle although I absolutely love it. But your Bad Harry tale is the best thing I've read today and I think you're great. Big sniff.

Spinnaret · 25/04/2019 20:03

I have always loathed trifle, but this is the loveliest thread, childhood memories, hilarious title and input from others, the midway baby announcement. It's got everything. And you can't trifle with that.

LookImAHooman · 25/04/2019 20:04

Oh, OP, I must be about five because I’ve lost it at your title GrinBlush You are so lovely. Trifle isn’t but that makes you lovelier.

DustyDustyKeyboard · 25/04/2019 20:08

I read that book to my DD this year! Amazing!

Plus, I'm delighted that the Naughty Little Sister is mention in a thread with the F word in the title. Grown up Little Sister would probably approve.

You are a lush mum.
