The secrets of overweight people

I mean this in a light-hearted way, but I guess it might also be helpful to us to see where we're getting it from.

I'll start:

I always serve myself the largest portion, and often nick a few extra bites in between the cooking and serving stages.

I eat a full meal whether I am particularly hungry or not (then often have seconds).

I gave up sugar and doubled my cheese intake (then I went back on sugar too).

Speaking of which, no meal is not improved by a generous topping of grated cheese.

I could quite happily drink a bottle of wine a night, although I don't let myself. On my 'good' nights I drink hot chocolate/ couple of beers and eat crisps instead.

Sometimes if nobody has seen me eat my first slice of toast, I'll put a third one in. This is especially the case when it's white bread, the 'only one' I could buy in the corner shop.

When DH is away I love to read and eat chocolate in bed.

Anyone else got any good tips to help me continue to sabotage my weight loss efforts?

chickenwing that’s me you’ve described there too.

I have been 16:8ing for flipping ages now, don’t eat anything until lunchtime, have a big salad for lunch and fruit etc, so far so virtuous. And then I get home and it goes to shit. I just can’t seem to help myself. I am wondering if I have some kind of sugar addiction.

Flower777 · 28/04/2019 13:51

The book ‘brain over binge’ is very good. It explains how- if you restrict yourself in the daytime- it’s really normal to then feel a little out of control in the evening because it is your brain driving you to eat.

So if you eat more in the day you will likely find that you don’t binge in the evening.

I have definitely found that to be true for myself.

I’m not very good at explaining things but the book is very good.

Freaking0ut · 28/04/2019 14:27

Flower777 Thankyou for your suggestion, I’m going to look it up. I am about 2 stone overweight but my eating has just become increasingly disordered as I’ve pinballed from one ‘diet’ to another. Reading this thread has definitely opened my eyes to that. I don’t really know what normal is anymore Blush

I also find that I now feel incredibly guilty whenever I eat pretty much anything, whether it’s good or bad, healthy or not. I think I have realised that a lot of my guilt around food has been inherited from my mum who has a terrible relationship with food and her own self image. I am slowly realising just how incredibly damaging that’s been and am aware of not allowing it to run off on my own children.

Here’s another good way to stay overweight :

Eat tiny amounts of carbs frequently throughout the day. Eg

Toast or cereal and coffee / tea with semi skimmed /skimmed milk for breakfast

Coffee throughout the day every couple of hours , maybe with a small plain biscuit

Sandwich or small pasta salad at lunchtime

More carbs for dinner - roll, baked potatoe, pasta, rice

Coffee and a biscuits at supper

This makes sure that your insulin levels are always high so you will never burn the stored fat. And of course you will be absolutely starving and feel shit all the time.

Another tip for gluten free people like me

Eat your own body weight in chocolate, crisps, oats and rice. Tell yourself that you don’t eat all the ( wheat containing ) biscuits, cakes and pastries that everyone else does, so it’s fine.

Treat yourself to a small gluten free loaf of bread ( twice the price and half the size of everyone else’s). Scoff it all within one or days because it’s too expensive to waste.

cookingonwine · 28/04/2019 16:00

I am just a pig ... can't have one sandwich will have four... can't have just one biscuit will have the pack. Can't have one package of crisps will have the whole 16 pack bag. I have no control and no potion control. Always been like it ... and probably will never change. I eat more calories then I need and have no guilt about it. Sometimes I eat so much I have to use my hair-bubble to keep my button up.

I'm okay with the way I look. I know I am unhealthy but I am not unhappy.

chillimartini · 28/04/2019 16:05

OP I want to be your friend!!!! You sound lovely and so so funny! I was having a down day and this really made me laugh ❤️
I feel so normal after reading some of your replies! I love food! X

Don't wear proper clothes if you can help it
Tracksuit, leggings, anything with Lycra or spandex, no belts, buttons or anything "fitted." Jeans are definitely your enemy.

Buy more food than will fit in the fridge so you have to eat some. And go shopping every day, preferably (but only if you don't have to walk) just in case there's something you fancy (cake) which you don't have in.

Make sure you order takeaway frequently enough to be on first name terms with any staff members at your local takeaways. If you are really committed, do this at every drive through in a 20mile radius also (again only if you don't have to walk)

Drive or get taxis everywhere. There is no need to walk anywhere ever.

Add sauce to everything. Mayonnaise, ketchup, bbq, Brown sauce, salad cream, blue cheese dressing. The more fat and/or sugar the better.

Don't buy cling film, foil, tins, tubs or food clips as there is no need for leftovers and everything comes in one portion size- the whole lot. If you can't finish something it can sit in the microwave until you are ready for it. There should be no risk of it going to waste. Remember you are committed to this. No quitters in this house.

Buy a deep fat fryer. And a bread machine. A toasted sandwich maker. A waffle press. And an ice cream maker. Do not waste these appliances, use them at every opportunity.

ShabbyAbby · 28/04/2019 16:17

Oh. Plus the crisps and chocolate rule. They work as a palate cleanser for one another so you can just eat them back to back forever. If you are struggling, a large bottle of full sugar fizzy drink usually helps it down. Preferably in front of a new box set. HTH

DieCryHate · 28/04/2019 16:49

I find ordering lots of lovely fruit and veg with a Tesco online shop renders at least 50% looking ropey by the mid to second half of the week of your diligent meal planning of joe wicks or slimming world meals so you HAVE to order Chinese food/eat a filthy lunch and have crackers and plentiful cheese for dinner/just neck some wine and forget a meal.

Also, if you are having cake, I find having a slightly smaller slice than your family (because you had the same sized size, covertly swallowed like a pelican in the kitchen, silently) works wonders.

medusawashere · 28/04/2019 16:50

Great thread. Love the honestly here! I was a very overweight child and then an anorexic adult until the age of about 25/26. Have only discovered a healthy relationship with food in my thirties.

Back in the anorexic days of yore, I would exist on a weightwatcher's ready meal, the odd slice of bread, Pepsi max and pro plus for six days a week. I was six and a half stone and desperately unhappy.

Then I started to eat more after getting some treatment for the disease and it has been a long road. I felt I had gained a bit too much last year but have cut out most carbs. Both parents had type two diabetes in their thirties and loads of associated issues and I am determined to avoid that fate.

These days, it's about enjoying the odd treat but keeping what I eat based around lean meat, veg, eggs, cheese and other protein rich foods that keep me full. You can make some great meals without overdoing the sugar, it just takes a little longer and requires more creativity.

I also don't buy bread, it is my absolute enemy and I can't stop myself from eating it.

Pizza is also my kryptonite. And Peroni, kitkat chunkies, peanut butter, big blocks of cheese, gourmet burgers, chips, chips and more chips with a massive dollop of hot sauce on the side.

Hungry now!

medusawashere · 28/04/2019 16:53

These posts are amazing! My dad (sadly no longer with us) would often regale me with tales of his epic eating sessions and we'd have this thing of eating chocolate in the car after shopping. He would always say "hide the evidence!"

"Hide the evidence" became a family joke and still makes me laugh when I feel sad and miss him.

Snog · 28/04/2019 16:58

I serve myself the same size portion as my dp who is bigger than me, more active and male.
Clearly I should be eating less but that just seems so unfair.

Prequelle · 28/04/2019 17:04

I'm really devastated that I'm falling back into the eating habits I once had when I was obese. I know it's hormones because of the pregnancy but I'm just gutted that I'm so hungry and I'm stuffing my face. I'm scared of being obese again. I've already put 2 inches on my thighs and I'm only 13+1.

I felt so much better being slim and had a real sense of achievement but now I'm shooting it up the swanny :(

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 28/04/2019 18:12

Another I'mNotNigel fan here... brilliant observations. Crying at DieCryHate's 'like a pelican in the kitchen'. I could do that with sausages or fishfingers... Grin

We all have our food 'things' or I think many of us do anyway? I have chocolate sitting around all day, every day, it's not my thing. I don't have a very sweet tooth and if I feel like a bit every now and again, it really is just a bit and I'll leave half-eaten bits and happily chuck them out.

Now Wotsits... can't have them in the house. Not ever. The kids have to eat them away from home - or I have to be on one of my business trips... bloody love those.

I eat quite a lot of fish or veggie meals, my husband eats lots of meat. He doesn't cook and that does bug me a bit as he hovers around like a baby bird wanting feeding all the time - of his type of food. The kids will eat anything. I know I could be a sylph if I just had myself to look after.

Crunchymum · 28/04/2019 18:49

I swear I could be a competitive eater.

I can keep shovelling it in long after I am full. Not that I often feel full of course.

It's a very ironic position as my youngest DC has a genetic condition which affects her metabolism and she'll be on a strict diet for her whole life (her diagnosis seems to have made my food issues a million times worse!! I am in the process of being assessed for CBT as I need to tackle this as she can't see me eating this way in the coming years as it's not fair - she cant have anything I shovel down my throat)

Oh and losing a stone with SW hasn't helped. Agree that there is nothing like the constraint of a diet (particular the strict one my 15mo is on!) to send you in the other direction??? Sad

Rabbitmug · 28/04/2019 20:12

The trouble is crap food tastes so lovely ....Medusa Flowers so sorry about your Dad.

ShabbyAbby · 28/04/2019 20:35

Only buy food for the kids.
Then when the DCs are in bed you have no choice but to order takeaway.

This works best if you are a single parent Grin

dustarr73 · 28/04/2019 21:51

Then when the DCs are in bed you have no choice but to order takeaway.

Me and dp ordered a takeaway tonight.Havent had a takeaway in ages.Kids have it timed to a t.They come down bout 10 minutes after it comes and they catch us with the stuff on our plate.Stuffing it in to out gob.

applesarerroundandshiny · 28/04/2019 22:23

@ImNotNigel I eat just like that (the frequent carb snacks). Even when I've lost weight that's how I do it with low fat cereal bars every couple of hours, and if I don't eat frequently I get shakes and have to quickly shovel some food in to stop it.

The constant sugar levels in my mouth has also given me problems with my teeth.

Thunderpunt · 28/04/2019 22:36

There are no calories in any biscuits eaten while standing in the kitchen, biscuit tin open, whilst choosing which 2 biscuits to have with a cuppa...

Moominfan · 29/04/2019 06:56

Food must be doused in calorific sauces that don't count because it's sauce

PegLegAntoine · 29/04/2019 07:41

Have a husband who is coeliac. Thus whenever treats come in even numbers, you have to eat the leftover one that he can’t eat because of gluten.

grumpyyetgorgeous · 29/04/2019 08:22

There are no calories in any biscuits eaten while standing in the kitchen, biscuit tin open, whilst choosing which 2 biscuits to have with a cuppa..

Also if the biscuit breaks before eating it, the calories fall out.
And if you're eating in company and somebody consumes more calories than you then it cancels out your calories. Grin

Blobby10 · 29/04/2019 09:54

And its against the law to leave a single biscuit or cake in the tub/tin! It will get lonely. Same as when there is an odd number - have to eat them in twos, or fours, or sixes Grin
