The secrets of overweight people

I mean this in a light-hearted way, but I guess it might also be helpful to us to see where we're getting it from.

I'll start:

I always serve myself the largest portion, and often nick a few extra bites in between the cooking and serving stages.

I eat a full meal whether I am particularly hungry or not (then often have seconds).

I gave up sugar and doubled my cheese intake (then I went back on sugar too).

Speaking of which, no meal is not improved by a generous topping of grated cheese.

I could quite happily drink a bottle of wine a night, although I don't let myself. On my 'good' nights I drink hot chocolate/ couple of beers and eat crisps instead.

Sometimes if nobody has seen me eat my first slice of toast, I'll put a third one in. This is especially the case when it's white bread, the 'only one' I could buy in the corner shop.

When DH is away I love to read and eat chocolate in bed.

Anyone else got any good tips to help me continue to sabotage my weight loss efforts?

I don't care about gut bacteria, I'm not sure many fat people do.

I think there's pretty compelling evidence now that obese people tend to have a distinct gut microbiome compared with thin people, and that changing your gut microbiome by eating a different variety of food can actually improve your chances of losing weight. So I think a lot of fat people should care, actually.

WhatNowRandy · 26/04/2019 23:15

If I'm ever to do a diet again, it wouldn't be one that banned anything in particular.

For me, low carbing and some other attempts to reduce my sugar intake were actually what really kick-started my love for sugar. I was more of a savoury carbs kind of person - could take or leave sugary things. Then Atkins attacked, and I spend c. five years on and off it. Sometimes several months "being good" and losing weight, but always ending up in huge bulimia relapses (got pretty unwell from that), and in that period just the knowledge that I wasn't ALLOWED sugar is what made it crave it like mad.

Also - I care about my gut bacteria and nutrition. I always make sure I make nutritious meals. Try to eat plenty of veg and fruit etc. I don't exactly crave that wine and ice cream on top of my meals because I think it's good for me. Hmm

WhatNowRandy · 26/04/2019 23:18

I always make sure I make nutritious meals

Hmm. That should probably be "always ideally try to" - just caught myself in an act of denial. Hmph. But when I'm actually managing to cook, I do.

I eat the way a normal person with a normal level of activity and at a normal weight could. So pretty healthy 90% of the time, the odd takeaway / slice of cake / glass of wine etc. I snack less than most people. My husband eats more than me and stays slim. The difference is that I am practically phobic of exercise. I hate getting hot and sweaty to the point that even the mildest physical exertion gives me full on anxiety attacks (which of course makes it worse). So I walk slowly. I avoid walking where I can. I avoid stairs. I don't do any exercise. I love to swim but I hate getting dressed afterwards again because I get hot and sweaty. The only way I've ever lost weight is to starve myself (less than 700 cals a day) because I use so few. I am thoroughly miserable in my own body.

Honestly, it's ruining my life and I literally don't know how to fix it. If anyone has any tips (other than "just do it") I'm all ears.

woodcutbirds · 26/04/2019 23:26

Eat large portions of healthy meals. Have seconds. Then graze on unhealthy snacks in between. O bad days (today is one) I just graze all day long. Constant craving.

Quickchangename · 26/04/2019 23:43

My secret - eat at 9 pm after grazing until then and downing at least half a bottle of wine.

People keep asking what I want for my (significant) birthday this year - I want to be 20kgs lighter. It’s the same bloody 20kgs I keep losing and regaining (5 times in 30 years ish)...ideally I’d like to lose 30 but I haven’t been that weight since I was 20 eating 800 calories a day :-(

Oh and someone mentioned Saxenda - I actually went to weightmedics today to investigate - bugger me it’s expensive!!!! They want £500 per month for it! So understandable it’s not available on nhs. More interesting is that when I nearly fainted at the cost the doctor admitted that phentermine (£60 per month) works just as well! We shall see!

LittleMy77 · 27/04/2019 00:14

My tips;

  • always eat a pastry or piece of cake with your daily coffee
  • spend the 25 minutes cooking DS tea also foraging for snacks and eating mindlessly whilst it cooks
  • keep kids snacks that you actually like in the house, and then eat them all and go buy more
  • buy slightly smaller than usual sharing bag of crisps, eat it all yourself and then go and buy a new one
  • do all the food shopping so DH has no clue on what treats / snacks there may be
  • be a SAHP who's driven to distraction by a 3.5 year old toddler with additional needs, having a family member have bad health and find solace in every bit of cake, sugar and biscuit you can get
  • understand portion control but not implement it

The crazy thing is I've successfully kept 3.5 stone off with WW for ~20 years, but have now banged on 10lbs since Christmas I just can't shift despite exercising more and being (slightly) more careful on what I eat. I got so pissed off I went to the Drs and asked for a full range of blood tests (thyroid etc) fortunately / unfortunately they all came back fine and I'm clearly just a fattie Grin Blush My issue is emotional / comfort eating - I would love to stop it, am even considering hypnotherapy as nothing else is working

TheSunIsShining19 · 27/04/2019 00:42

@threeishappy you said my favourite words so had to comment! Jaffa Cakes!! My addiction is extreme now..gone from a 12 pack to now 24! Nearly every night!!
I'm very slim though so hope I don't get booted off here (DH doesn't know how!) just going to have no bloody teeth left 😂
No one appreciates the good old Jaffa enough these days!!

SoleBizzz · 27/04/2019 00:49

Being addicted to processed food is a real thing. Try Joan Inland on Facebook.

Flower777 · 27/04/2019 00:52

I care about my gut bacteria. I had a glass of kefir earlier today.

Sometimes I make a kefir smoothie. I do try. In between some terrible habits.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/04/2019 00:58

Nanamilly If you take out what I don't actually like and whole food groups that I have strange allergies to. There is very little left for me to secret eat.

TheClitterati · 27/04/2019 01:18

I do love carbs. But my secret is they are merely a butter delivery vehicle. I love butter.

Nanamilly · 27/04/2019 04:34

If you take out what I don't actually like and whole food groups that I have strange allergies to. There is very little left for me to secret eat.

I suspect you’re very much in denial about your relationship with food and if you wrote down everything you ate you’d soon see the reason you’re overweight.

BlancheDuBlah · 27/04/2019 05:07

I find it tasteless (no pun intended) glorifying gluttony while 795 million people don't have enough to eat.

Can you imagine how the millions of starving would feel reading this thread? What they would think of you?

Fuck the latest slimming fads, that alone effectively curbs my appetite.

TheClitterati · 27/04/2019 06:37

I just got back from a month away and did a quick shop. Bought loads of f&v - body wanting big salad.

I then had 2 cream fruit tarts for dinner and fell asleep.

When flying, dd didn't eat much so I often had double dinners telling myself "the portions are tiny aren't they"? In 28 hours I had 4 double dinners, plus a meal at halfway airport.

I rarely if ever feel actually hungry.

Pinkarsedfly · 27/04/2019 06:52

BlancheduBlah

Interesting that you care more about the feelings of ‘the starving millions’ who’ll never actually read this thread than you do about the ‘gluttons’ who will.

It’s a bit tasteless to use ‘the starving millions’ as a smokescreen for your nasty, judgement, in my opinion.

fluorescentorange · 27/04/2019 06:55

I buy two bags of crisps, open them both and decant one bag into the other, discard the empty bag. I will then argue till I am blue in the face that I am doing well I have only had 1 bag of crisps today😂
I really cannot work out why I am overweight!!!

dustarr73 · 27/04/2019 06:55

When i was pregnant the last time.I had GD.,they tried to control it with diet. But it opened my eyes about portion control. And how many oz i could have,

And i had to write down every little thing i ate.God it was so surprising. You think you dont eat anything. Then your food diary tells you otherwise,

Slice of cake with your creamy calorific double latte, the 2 bags of crisp and 14 biscuits while watching the telly. That sly piece of cake while no one is watching.

The all you can eat buffet. It all adds up.
@Oliversmumsarmy do a food diary. You will be surprised

fluorescentorange · 27/04/2019 07:01

(That sounds like someone is policing my food and I have to argue with them.)
The argument is obviously with my whiter than white inner self. She drives me nuts😂

ArgyMargy · 27/04/2019 07:08

@Quickchangename shop around - have a look at Facebook there are a few groups. Phentermine does not have a licence in the UK/EU.

Are you assuming all 795 million are all illiterate or can't ever source WiFi?

Even if that were true there is no smokescreen or hate here just my opinion and an awful lot of defensiveness on your part.

Facts like I mentioned do help when I need to lose weight. Fact.

Steeve · 27/04/2019 07:14

Cashew nuts, I love the roasted salted ones, but the honey roasted ones....

Steeve · 27/04/2019 07:17

I'm on so many tablets that cause weight gain too, pisses me off GP won't do a thing or refer me to hospital...grr.

As well as cashews, occasionally Mozzies' milkshakes and BJs, Haagen Daz, Carte Dor or Kelly's ice cream. Whole tub with a film.

grumpyyetgorgeous · 27/04/2019 07:20

Oh come on @BlancheDuBlah you jumped on this thread with the sole intention of making people feel bad for having a bit of a giggle.......well done, have a Cake to reward yourself! Grin

BlancheDuBlah · 27/04/2019 07:48

Not true at all.

But I will have a nibble if it makes you feel better Wink.
