The secrets of overweight people

I mean this in a light-hearted way, but I guess it might also be helpful to us to see where we're getting it from.

I'll start:

I always serve myself the largest portion, and often nick a few extra bites in between the cooking and serving stages.

I eat a full meal whether I am particularly hungry or not (then often have seconds).

I gave up sugar and doubled my cheese intake (then I went back on sugar too).

Speaking of which, no meal is not improved by a generous topping of grated cheese.

I could quite happily drink a bottle of wine a night, although I don't let myself. On my 'good' nights I drink hot chocolate/ couple of beers and eat crisps instead.

Sometimes if nobody has seen me eat my first slice of toast, I'll put a third one in. This is especially the case when it's white bread, the 'only one' I could buy in the corner shop.

When DH is away I love to read and eat chocolate in bed.

Anyone else got any good tips to help me continue to sabotage my weight loss efforts?

"Prequelle

I think sometimes the difference is with many slim people that when they go out they may eat what they want but at home they'll have a different diet to us. It's quite deceiving".
Yes I realised that recently. My cousins are both slim, but when I see them at family parties they have seconds, desserts, wine etc. So how are they so slim.
Then I realised I see them at parties.

Also, when I lose weight I realise I have to come to terms with being hungry. Nothing bad happens. But as you say the opposite will kill me.

ImNotNigel

This thread has been a revelation to me in the way I don't eat like everyone else.

I am not interested in food.
The last couple of days I have been busy and I didn't get to eat anything before 4pm both days.
I then had a cup of coffee with a slice of wheat free pumpernickel bread and a wheat free role with vegan cream cheese.

Later on I had another role and some vegetable juice.

I am allergic to whole food groups.
I am also vegatarian

I hate cake or mostly anything sweet.
I do have sugar in my coffee and sorbet if I am out.
Otherwise in the evening I can be found with a jug of fizzy water with apple cider vinegar.

Yet I am like the side of a house.

All my weight went on when I was pregnant with ds.

The only time I have shifted it was when I went on the juice diet.

1 juice on the morning and one at night.

I was starving all the time but I did lose nearly a stone over 6 weeks but I would have to just be like that for years to actually shift the amount of weight I need to lose.

@Oliversmumsarmy i think if thats true, you need to get yourself checked out.

I have ummmed and aaaahed about leaving this here, as I appreciate that it's not exactly the spirit of the thread, but since so many have discussed intermittent fasting and low carbing I thought I would.

Blood Sugar Diet and Fast800 thread 14 www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/3532374-blood-sugar-diet-and-fast800-thread-14

I found this diet after being recommended on a similar thread to this several years ago, and it really has changed my life. I was so powerless around food, and now I'm free- and it's so incredibly liberating. If you are interested in finding out more please do pop by our lovely friendly thread.

Nanamilly · 26/04/2019 19:42

Oliver, I’m very sorry to say this but I think you’re in denial as to what you eat.

It’s extremely common for people who are overweight to do this.

countrymousesussex · 26/04/2019 19:46

M&S melting middle chocolate puddings - am on mat leave and buy some whenever I’m in our nearest town, then eat them both before DH comes home from work 🙈

When he goes out for the evening I make nachos with a whole packet of Doritos, salsa and a whole packet of grated mozzarella 🐷

ContinuityError · 26/04/2019 19:57

thenewaveragebear1983 I’ve done well on the 5:2 before, but perimenopause and a love of carbs has led me to flirting with the BSD this week. I haven’t been that strict (but have walked a lot) and am down 5lbs since Sunday plus less bloated and definitely lost a bit off my waist and hips. I think I’ll try going full BSD (after reading the book) next week and see what happens. I have about 12 lbs and a few inches to shift. The BSD recipes are pretty good, as are the ones in the 2 Meal Day book (just need to swap any carbs for veg). Been very easy too.

This book is getting rave reviews all over the place. Don't know if it would maybe help some of you?

What has struck me reading this thread is how people see biscuits, white bread, chocolate, cupcakes as desirable, a treat, something very nice. When really these ‘foods’ are nothing of the sort, they bloat you, damage your liver, damage gut bacteria, make you sluggish, tired, give you brain fog, but contain zero nutrients that body can actually use. Nothing in it for your bones, skin, eyes, brain health, intestines or heart.

Why, why, why are these foods incite such a longing, such an insatiable want? Other than addiction I cannot come up with any credible explanation. It’s like smokers know tabacco is wrecking their beauty and health, but they lust after a cigarette. Or an alcoholic who can see their life is falling apart but can’t resist a drink.

So many similarities.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/04/2019 20:38

Continuity that's good to hear. I think the biggest surprise to people when they start BSD or similar is how easy it actually is. Literally a few days after stopping sugar cold turkey, and most people can walk past the aisles and not even want it- it's not even like managing just about to say no, it's a genuine loss of desire for it. I never in my dreams thought it was possible, but I lost 3 stones in 6 months last year and have kept it off. One of the ladies on our thread has lost 2 stone in 8 weeks. It's amazing.

ContinuityError · 26/04/2019 20:45

I don’t have a sweet tooth (my Christmas chocolate is largely untouched) but I do like savoury carbs. But I haven’t really missed anything this week, not even beer.

HairycakeLinehan · 26/04/2019 21:03

Where were all you people when I gave my account on the “what do you really eat inna day thread” Blush
I hadn’t read the thread before I replied, everyone else was so normal.

I hate my relationship with food but I’m glad I’m not delusional either.
You cannot eat 800-1000 calories a day and be 6 stone overweight. You will find, if you really take an honest look at your intake, your slim friends most certainly won’t be eating more than you.

headinhands · 26/04/2019 21:20

Of I feel a bit peckish at bed time I'll have a slice of white bread, thickly spread butter and peanut butter

Flower777 · 26/04/2019 21:26

To the people recommending diets, um, thanks - I know you are trying to help, but I, and I’m sure many of us here, have tried dieting before. I went on my first diet age 11. And have tried many since.

There is so much evidence to show that diets only make you fatter in the long run unfortunately which has certainly been true for me.

I am more interested in an anti diet approach these days.

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2019 21:32

HairycakeLinehan let me guess, snacking on a handful of berries and on a Saturday two squares of really dark chocolate? Mmm mmm

ExpletiveDelighted · 26/04/2019 21:47

I've tried the Blood Sugar Diet and it was horrific, I lost a stone quickly but found it absolutely impossible to maintain longer term, it was impossibly restrictive. Same with lowcarb bootcamp, absolutely hated it and it sent my anxiety through the roof, all that weight went back on very quickly.

Accountant222 · 26/04/2019 22:12

Two bags of marmite crisps for my breakfast every day since I went to secondary school and I ain't stopping now.

ImNotNigel · 26/04/2019 22:35

Grin @handsoffmysweets

threeishappy · 26/04/2019 22:43

I eat the worst breakfasts. If I'm at home, a whole packet of Jaffa cakes or crisps or something. And when I was pregnant I got into the habit of having a subway for breakfast Confused

I sometimes go to Poundstretcher just for the cheap sweets, and hide them so I can eat them alone when watching Netflix.

On Sunday nights when DH is at work I sometimes get a Chinese delivery and get a starter and a main 😬

threeishappy · 26/04/2019 22:46

@AvocadoDream are you sure you are on the right thread? I don't care about gut bacteria, I'm not sure many fat people do.

puppylovebaby · 26/04/2019 22:51

1 slice of toast with an audience and 3 slices of toast behind their backs
Always serve myself the biggest portion
Always taste the food when cooking - repeatedly
Eating my children's leftovers
Snack 'healthy' foods whilst cooking- high calorie salt free nuts...
Nothing sweet to eat in the kitchen ... raid the cupboards for sultanas, sugar free healthy peanut butter, coconut cream in a jar,.....
Bedtime snacks
Packet of biscuits with tea
School lunches - I work at a school

Stroller15 · 26/04/2019 22:57

What a good thread. My top tips would be 2dc (not the physiology of it, the tiredness and how relentless it is - I actually stuff my face with chocolates when the toddler doesn't want to go to bed like I am breathing into a bag). Also high energy food requires no energy!
Also potatoes: mashed, fried, chips, crisps, gratin, dauphinoise, hash browns, boiled, salad, fondant...that, that's about it. Late night eating. Watching my fitbit hit 2000 steps for the day. I can go on.
Trying to change now with intermittent fasting.

applesarerroundandshiny · 26/04/2019 22:59

Carbs, carbs and more carbs. Preferably with grated cheese on top.

I gained weight when I stopped eating meat as I replaced any (lean) meat in my diet with extra carbs.

I have to finish off my meals with desert (a Gu cheesecake or 2) and then it's the sweet/savoury/sweet snackathon in the evening.

WhatNowRandy · 26/04/2019 23:00

I think sometimes the difference is with many slim people that when they go out they may eat what they want but at home they'll have a different diet to us. It's quite deceiving

This is definitely my friends.

We often meet up in cafes or pubs, and we'll all have similar levels or food, desserts, coffees and/or alcohol. In fact, like many others here, I'm probably the one eating less, because I'm the one with shame issues about food.

The thing is, one of them I know is quite uninterested in food in general, or fitness for its own sake, but enjoys sports (shudder!) and gets a LOT of exercise from basically just his hobbies. The other one hates sports as much as I do, but is one of those odd people who FORGETS to eat, apparently, and just in general doesn't seem that invested in food, either. She'll make a huge soup and just eat that for the week, because cooking is boring and food is fuel, except for the odd occasion like going out with friends.

My DH is also a meal forgetter. He'll even admit to being hungry, but is too lazy to go and get anything to eat. Like the base level of being is not eating, and eating would be the thing requiring energy. For me it feels like my base level would be to always eat, and not eating is the activity requiring focus and energy!
