The secrets of overweight people

I mean this in a light-hearted way, but I guess it might also be helpful to us to see where we're getting it from.

I'll start:

I always serve myself the largest portion, and often nick a few extra bites in between the cooking and serving stages.

I eat a full meal whether I am particularly hungry or not (then often have seconds).

I gave up sugar and doubled my cheese intake (then I went back on sugar too).

Speaking of which, no meal is not improved by a generous topping of grated cheese.

I could quite happily drink a bottle of wine a night, although I don't let myself. On my 'good' nights I drink hot chocolate/ couple of beers and eat crisps instead.

Sometimes if nobody has seen me eat my first slice of toast, I'll put a third one in. This is especially the case when it's white bread, the 'only one' I could buy in the corner shop.

When DH is away I love to read and eat chocolate in bed.

Anyone else got any good tips to help me continue to sabotage my weight loss efforts?

@BlancheDuBlah
Well why did you come on to a tread about overweight people and make a dig about starving children.

What can we do about that.God i hate people who come on and derail a thread. You knew what the thread was a bout,so why click in.Unless you wanted your snarky judgemental barb to take centre stage.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/04/2019 08:32

The all you can eat buffet. It all adds up.
@Oliversmumsarmy do a food diary. You will be surprised

Yes at how little I do eat.

This sort of attitude is why I cannot get anywhere.

I have a cholesterol level of 1.8. If I was eating all this food then surely it would be higher than that.

Prequelle · 27/04/2019 08:42

My bloods and cholesterol were completely fine when I was obese.

Secret Eaters is an interesting programme. These people convince themselves that they're eating very little and that there must be something wrong with them.

ImNotNigel · 27/04/2019 08:44

Steeve - you are so right. Except about the ice cream - Mackies is the best. As well as chocolate Gellatino ice cream from Lidl which is surprisingly cheap. The Chocolate sells out fast so I always buy at least three tubs, to be on the safe side.

Can’t risk an Ice cream emergency.

As well as cashews, occasionally Mozzies' milkshakes and BJs, Haagen Daz, Carte Dor or Kelly's ice cream. Whole tub with a film

applesarerroundandshiny · 27/04/2019 08:46

@peachgreen if you think your level of not exercising/ hate of being sweaty is a full on phobia- may be look into CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy), if you have a GP who you think is likely to be sympathetic you could ask for referral, otherwise you may need to google therapists in your area. It's probably quite expensive though.

applesarerroundandshiny · 27/04/2019 08:52

@Oliversmumsarmy you have said that there are quite a few foods you are allergic to, and I was wondering if your weight gain was caused by your body's reaction to other foods you are eating, like a food intolerance. I don't know if this is possible (grasping at straws for you). Have you tried doing FODMAP diet which excludes all foods where there is a likely allergy, so, not just gluten and dairy but particular fruits and veg. It's meant for IBS sufferers but would be good as generally excluding possible intolerances.

grumpyyetgorgeous · 27/04/2019 09:02

*The Chocolate sells out fast so I always buy at least three tubs, to be on the safe side.

Now see if I did that I'd have three ice-cream emergencies in one weekend!!

Mind you, it has to be Haagen Dazs pralines and cream for me and I couldn't stockpile that unless I robbed a bank first.Grin

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/04/2019 09:19

Thanks applesarerroundandshiny I did ask the gp for an allergy test and she told me that one didn’t exist and it was trial and error to find out what I had allergies to.

I just get the impression from the drs that I have got to a certain age so they have washed their hands of me.

Dp (early 60s) feels the same.

He goes private now because his life depends on it. We think if we hadn’t had the money to pay for a particular operation he would definitely be dead by now.

I wouldn’t know where to start with a Foodmap.

I can see writing things down and the reaction I get to things when the reaction of going beetroot red and feeling like I could tear my skin off is so immediate but how would that work with weight gain or loss.

Meercat2 · 27/04/2019 09:28

My problem is working night shifts. I crave carbs and sugar. And then combine this with the reward feeling and how I feel sorry for myself. Then eating comfort type 'meals' just before going to bed

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/04/2019 09:31

I will look into it though.

I have been on all inclusive holidays and holidays.
Invariably I have random strangers coming over to me saying that they have been watching me (usually because I stand out as the fattest person there) and I eat hardly anything. Why are you so fat.

It is embarrassing

StealthPolarBear · 27/04/2019 09:36

Wow they're rude!

DocusDiplo · 27/04/2019 09:38

I think the thread has moved on but can I add please, I snack before bed. I also eat little during the day and lots in the evening.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 27/04/2019 09:45

I also recommend having a partner who quietly enables you.

I told my H that I am soon to see the obesity clinic on NHS. Explained about my emotional eating, my worries and the impact my weight is having on my health - that I really need to sort it out this year or have a stroke.

He bought wine and suggested a take away for dinner.

WTF is that about? I refused, and went to bed hungry and indignant instead. What I put in my mouth is my responsibility - but, he is not helpful. Not at all.

applesarerroundandshiny · 27/04/2019 09:54

@Oliversmumsarmy the diet is actually called FODMAP (google it) and already does the exclusion of most allergens for you. I was just thinking that as our bodies process and digest foods differently, may be this would help. I did say I was grasping at straws! Alternatively may be you have a really poor metabolism and I think there's a diet plan somewhere that's meant to improve your metabolism.

( disclaimer- I am absolutely no nutrition expert but I am very interested in food and nutrition and read a lot around this, I just don't put it into practice myself Blush)

I have milk or soy in weak coffee every day (about 400mls total).

I drink a bottle of wine a week.

I eat dark chocolate (3-4 mini 25g bars moser Roth every week).

I eat larger portions than I should.

I eat 3 meals a day whether I'm hungry or not.

I get lazy about exercise (mainly walking) and do it in stints then get sick of doing it.

I struggle between concepts of low fat vs low carb etc. I eat low carb then worry about high protein diets, as I don't want constipation. Nor bowel cancer.

I eat low fat for gallstones and to lower my slightly high cholesterol then worry that my SW very low fat diet will make my gallstones worse. So I add extra olive oil and eat a few nuts here and there over the week.

I worry about the research saying high carb is better for you, which defies the diets I fluctuate between (low carb or SW or both simultaneously). So I eat brown rice on top of the protein.

Using the fast diet app just now (following this thread) my TDEE is 1586, which means I suppose that I need to eat 1086 a day to lose a pound a week (500cals x 7 days). I manage that for a few weeks or even months (nearer 1200-1300) and then it creeps up.

I'm bloody sick of it. It's a roundabout.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/04/2019 11:03

Handsoffmysweets do have a hereditary issue which has a connection to food.

Nanamilly · 27/04/2019 11:21

Oliversmum, could you go privately to see someone?

I only ask because I think we’re about the same age and like me you won’t get away much longer with your cholesterol level, sugar level and BP readings. It can go from very good to something to worry about in a space of months. Not that it stopped me cycling 28kms one morning on holiday last week butto be frank I want to cycle on holiday every day and live as long as I can so in a few weeks I’m having weight loss surgery. Is it something you can consider?

Nanamilly · 27/04/2019 11:24

( disclaimer- I am absolutely no nutrition expert but I am very interested in food and nutrition and read a lot around this, I just don't put it into practice myself

I think most people who’re obese are very well clued up on nutrition. I know I am. 🤪

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/04/2019 11:26

Handsoffmysweets no I didn’t say that.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/04/2019 11:28

Nanamilly my cholesterol levels will never get much higher. It is genetic.

Fenellapitstop · 27/04/2019 11:34

Working nights on 4 hours sleep, desperately snaffling as much sugar and caffeine as possible to stay awake

ContinuityError · 27/04/2019 11:42

Oliversmumsarmy Would a consultation with an endocrinologist be worthwhile?
