What does the phrase 'tossing it off' mean to you?

Both me and my friend agree that it means wanking. However, both of our husbands (who have never met, and are from completely different areas of the country) use it to mean skiving off/doing nothing. As an example -
Me- "So what have you done at work today?"
DH- "Not a lot, just tossed it off for most of the day."
Me- "You... wanked, at work, all day?"
DH- "What?! No! I meant that I didn't do any work at work today!"

(Before people pile in and ask why he's lazing about at work, DH only does nothing at work because they don't give him anything to do)

So is it wanking, or skiving?

What everyone said

Mapril · 17/04/2019 12:18

Re dossing- it’s not people just getting them both confused-

Dossing off = skiving
Tossing it off = skiving

EngagedAgain · 17/04/2019 12:35

I have never associated it with skiving. I would say dossing about, or a dosser.

Insomnibrat · 17/04/2019 12:37

Means both.

Richmond1972 · 17/04/2019 12:37

MaybeitsMaybelline · 17/04/2019 12:38

West Yorkshire

tossing off is wanking

Tossing IT off is doing bugger all, usually said around a task that isn’t being completed

Ilovetolurk · 17/04/2019 12:40

I’m Yorkshire too and agree with MaybeitsMaybelline

GeePipe · 17/04/2019 12:41

Dossing means to skive

Tossing off is wanking only. Im southern but live in the south and have never heard of tossing it off to mean skivving.

Farmerswifey12 · 17/04/2019 12:43

Wanking, never heard it used to mean skiving

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/04/2019 12:57

I have seen 'tossing it off' used to mean drinking a drink down in one go - ie. "He picked up the whisky and tossed it off, before slamming the glass down and stalking out of the bar".

I have never heard 'tossing it off' as a euphemism for skiving/dossing at work, and as far as I know, wanking is 'tossing one off'.

Thrupennybrit · 17/04/2019 13:01

I look at context as means both things to me.

ProfYaffle · 17/04/2019 13:04

I'm from the north west, never heard of tossing meaning skiving. Throwing/wanking to me.

KnifeAngel · 17/04/2019 13:05

I have never heard that phrase ever but I would assume it meant throwing something. I tossed my coat on the sofa.

dinoegg · 17/04/2019 13:09

Oh this is hilarious Grin it definitely means wanking to me!
Dossing is skiving

supadupapupascupa · 17/04/2019 13:10

Tossing it off to me means being lazy/skiving
I'm in West York's

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 17/04/2019 13:24

Skiving- South Yorkshire

GlossyTaco · 17/04/2019 13:27

It means wanking.

I'm from London.

Ribbonsonabox · 17/04/2019 13:27

It can mean both depending on context.
If you tossed it off... it means you messed about or skivved
If you tossed off... it means you had a wank
If you tossed them off.. it mostly means you wanked them off except in some circumstances where you might metaphorically mean you buttred them up

I think wanking euphemisms are generally used to imply messing about or wasting time arent they?

gubbsywubbsy · 17/04/2019 13:31

Americans don't use tosser so won't understand the phrase .
