What does the phrase 'tossing it off' mean to you?

Both me and my friend agree that it means wanking. However, both of our husbands (who have never met, and are from completely different areas of the country) use it to mean skiving off/doing nothing. As an example -
Me- "So what have you done at work today?"
DH- "Not a lot, just tossed it off for most of the day."
Me- "You... wanked, at work, all day?"
DH- "What?! No! I meant that I didn't do any work at work today!"

(Before people pile in and ask why he's lazing about at work, DH only does nothing at work because they don't give him anything to do)

So is it wanking, or skiving?

North west. I have only ever heard dossing for skiving. We used to say it at school for when we had an easy lesson or a supply teacher “I quite like music, it’s a doss”

Only ever heard tossing off for skiving. “Tossing one off”. “He’s a complete tosser” ie he’s a wanker.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 17/04/2019 13:32

Sorry I meant I’ve only ever heard tossing off for WANKiNG!!!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 17/04/2019 13:34

“think wanking euphemisms are generally used to imply messing about or wasting time arent they?”

To me it means someone’s an idiot.

Cocolapew · 17/04/2019 13:34

Wank.
I've never heard it used as skiving I say dossed about for doing FA.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 17/04/2019 13:35

You’re a wanker = you’re an idiot.

BertrandRussell · 17/04/2019 13:38

“Tossing off” means wanking
“Tossing something off” means doing something In a slapdash manner.. “That essay reads like you just tossed it off at the last minute”

MooBaaLaLaLa · 17/04/2019 13:38

I'd have assumed that meant skiving but I'd also have made a lame joke about him being a tosser (wanker). Grin

BestZebbie · 17/04/2019 13:41

Tossing it off is the same as phoning it in - doing something hastily or without much effort (or I guess could be used for wanking an animal but I'd assume the former!).
There is also the literal meaning of throwing, eg "I tossed the duvet off in my sleep because I got too hot".

SimonJT · 17/04/2019 13:41

Tossing off = wanking
Tossing it off = giving someone a reach around

cliffdiver · 17/04/2019 13:43

I'm in SE England and only heard of it as a term for wanking or throwing something (tossed a frisbee), never skiving off.

MenuPlant · 17/04/2019 13:43

Tossing off =wanking

Never heard anyone say tossing it off, if did would assume wanking

London

CrispbuttyNo1 · 17/04/2019 13:46

North west

Tossing off - wanking

Tossing it off - giving up/not bothering to do something

LadyOfTheCanyon · 17/04/2019 13:47

I thought to toss something off was to do it quickly and easily, without thought.
"I just tossed off an email to Dave" is a completely different sentence to "I just tossed Dave off"

Never heard it in relation to skiving. That's dossing, surely?

I'm London through and through.

bobstersmum · 17/04/2019 13:48

Lancashire here and tossing it off is skiving.

CornishMaid1 · 17/04/2019 13:53

SW and never heard it used for skiving off before.

BlueCornishPixie · 17/04/2019 14:41

I'm from SE and never heard of it in a skiving situ.

Tossed off means wanked off.

I would say dossed about or it was a doss but I wouldn't say tossed it off.

WoollyMummoth · 17/04/2019 15:02

I can’t believe so many people have not heard of it- tossing it off means skiving. Well it does in my corner of Yorkshire.

mumofBeth · 17/04/2019 15:09

Aw Scotland here and definitely wanking!

Babdoc · 17/04/2019 15:10

Well, if you’re willing to accept Chambers Dictionary as the arbiter, here’s their definition:
Toss off - to perform or produce quickly or cursorily; to drink off in a single draught; to remark casually; to masturbate (vulgar sl).

Mapril · 17/04/2019 15:11

It’s not ‘toss off’ though, it’s toss it off

jackparlabane · 17/04/2019 15:33

I'm from SE and tossing something off is to do it quickly with little effort, but tossing off or tossing someone off are wanking.

WoollyMummoth · 17/04/2019 15:53

Like mapril said it’s not tossing off- that is wanking. The “it” makes all the difference. You are tossing “it” off. That in my book is skiving😁

RaffertyFair · 17/04/2019 15:59

As BertrandRussell said

“Tossing off” means wanking
“Tossing something off” means doing something In a slapdash manner.. “That essay reads like you just tossed it off at the last minute”

EngagedAgain · 17/04/2019 16:49

Tosser to means someone that's a bit of a wanker. Some of it depends on the context? Like talking about tossing a ball, or 'can you just toss that over' (to throw something over to someone). I don't think people talk like that now though do they? So to me apart from tossing a salad it mainly has rude connotations!

DecumusScotti · 17/04/2019 16:53

DH- "Not a lot, just tossed it off for most of the day."
Me- "You... wanked, at work, all day?"
DH- "What?! No! I meant that I didn't do any work at work today!"

I’m calling it: the OP’s DH totally did spend the entire day wanking, but changed his story when he saw the OP’s horrified expression.
