I need to make the absolute best cake ever. HELP!

Managed to accidentally get involved in a bake-off. My normal style of cooking is of the ‘empty the fridge into a pan, add garlic and hey presto’ sort.

So what can I make that is delicious, impressive and competition winning?

A bit of a faff but absolutely worth it!!

I once made an absolutely gorgeous lemon cake that had lemon curd and mascarpone filling. Everyone loved it. And now other friends have picked it up as their “signature”. I’ve heard people say to them “oh I do love your lemon cake” and it’s basically the one I made all those years ago.

It’s lovely and very easy but you might be looking for something more showstopping?

It's amazing, very easy and the white top makes it look like a pint of Guinness!

I second the Guinness cake or there is one on the BBC Good Food website called Ultimate Chocolate Cake which is amazing.

PopWentTheWeasel · 16/04/2019 13:58

How long have you got to make it? Something like a cheesecake, that sits in the fridge whilst you do chocolate decorations might do the job. No risk of it not rising if you don't have to bake it.

I think Rick Stein did a ginger and dark chocolate one. Ginger biscuits as the base.

Another vote for chocolate Guinness cake

Riverviews · 16/04/2019 14:02

If you Google"old fashioned chocolate cake Nigella", you'll find my favourite.

Easy to make, very moist and always a winner

caperplips · 16/04/2019 14:10

I'm sorry but lemon madeira cake is never going to win a bake-off! Sure, it probably tastes nice....but it is so boring to look at (and eat!)

You need.........

Nigella's Chocolate Raspberry Heart Cake - it looks and tastes amazing! And is not difficult to make at all

WhyTheLongFace · 16/04/2019 14:40

I double the buttercream & have made it either as one big cake or 24 cupcakes.
Use chocolate eggs etc to decorate at this time of year.

I need to make the absolute best cake ever. HELP!
Niquitic · 16/04/2019 15:22

It's really not that boring! Especially when done in a bundt tin as picture on the link & served with blueberries.

Miriamkiwi · 16/04/2019 15:29

My gorgeous daughter took it upon herself to outbake the hell outta me and my chocolate cake of old by baking " best ever brownies found on a YouTube channel that takes say brownies etc and finds the ultimate recipe. I don't like Brownies but these 😇 heaven!!

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 17/04/2019 08:55

I know a great almond and polenta lemon drizzle cake recipe if you're interested, OP?

GoBrookeYourself · 17/04/2019 09:06

IamPickleRick that lemon recipe sounds lovely! Would you mind sharing please?

Insertinspirationalquotehere · 17/04/2019 09:08

Iampickle please god give me your cake recipe.... I'm obsessed with recreating a particularly moist yet firm lemon cake I once had in hay on wye, and this sounds very similar...

emotionalaffair · 17/04/2019 09:14

another vote for chocolate guinness or flora's famous courgette cake.

TheWoollybacksWife · 17/04/2019 09:15

The Pink Whisk raspberry ripple cheesecake sponge is amazing.

SnowsInWater · 17/04/2019 09:30

Xiaoxiong beat me to it with Nigella's chocolate Guinness cake. This is the cake I am always asked to make and the effort to result ratio is laughable 😊

DoNotTouchTheTree · 17/04/2019 09:44

Peggy Porschen's Dark Chocolate Truffle Cake is the best chocolate cake ever. It's like nothing you've ever tasted, takes 2 days to make and is an absolute showstopper to look at.

Fromage · 17/04/2019 12:32
  1. buy cake mix
  2. add extra flavouring to mask it being from a packet
  3. do really fancy decorating and put fresh cream & strawberries in the middle
  4. do the 'nervous GBBO showstopper' face as it's cut into, even though you know, it being basically foolproof, it can't possibly be under or over baked
  5. WIN
Nightlights · 17/04/2019 12:37

@IamPickleRick please post the lemon cake recipe! Thanks

TanselleTooTall · 17/04/2019 12:44

Do you have the skills to make a dessert that has a few, moderately difficult steps to it?

TanselleTooTall · 17/04/2019 12:45

Oh the irony! I don't even have the skills to post a properly clicky link. Blush

stephstrops · 17/04/2019 12:46

Also waiting for the lemon cake recipe
