What should I get from m&s food?

I've never been before, it's far too fancy for us! But going today just to try it.
Is there anything that you really love that I should try?

Oh - and their low-cal chocolate mousses are vegetarian

C8H10N4O2 · 13/04/2019 09:33

Massively overrated. They have some fruit and veg which is harder to get elsewhere such as particular varieties of apples. The prepared salads/convenience foods which made the brand are now no better than anywhere else but still more expensive.

MightyAtlantic · 13/04/2019 09:34

I would recommend:
Mini choc chip hot cross buns
Feta cheese and herb (?) pastries
Fire roasted tortilla chips
Welsh cakes (it's the only place I can get them in Scotland!)
And of course giant chocolate buttons!

Oliversmumsarmy · 13/04/2019 09:39

I feel like I am the only one to not like M&S food.

I think it has a certain taste to it. Can definitely tell when someone has served it.

Happynow001 · 13/04/2019 10:13

The marinated prawns. I usually get them when they are three for £10. Great as a treat for a light lunch/dinner.

Also their Gastropub fish pie (the large one) is great to share with added vegetables. Though I note they've started to put spinach in it and raised the price so may buy this less often!

The fresh scones.

missmouse101 · 13/04/2019 10:18

Granola squares from the bakery counter. Amazing!

TheSheepofWallSt · 13/04/2019 10:23

Breaded chicken tenders - are proper chicken not mechanically separated meat

Steak is good

Fruit and veg good and lasts forever in the fridge

Cakes- particularly a cheap triple Chocolate Swiss roll (1.50?) and their fresh cream cakes

Someone said the Cornish cruncher- v good

Their own brand white wines are very drinkable - red hit and miss

Ready made sides- red cabbage and the Indian selection ones

Very good tapasy picnic food

CoraCoo · 13/04/2019 10:51

The pizza's are good ones and oh drools at the though of the butter chicken. Their guacamole is lovely too.

PineapplePatty · 13/04/2019 11:07

Their stuff is all pretty good but the fresh counter is excellent although not cheap.

Thymeout · 13/04/2019 11:19

3 for £7 pasta ready meals for one are good. Bacon and mushroom tagliatelle etc. Plenty of sauce.

But I find most meat ready meals are too peppery for me, even shepherd's pie.

Prefer Lidl's pastries. Their croissants and pains au chocolate are so much larger, fresher and much better value, but M&S family size cakes are a good buy.

When they do a 3 for £10 fresh meat/fish deal, I buy 3 chickens and freeze 2. Better quality than other supermarkets.

I wish they had more value items in ham, bacon and cheese. Feels a bit of a rip-off.

Langrish · 13/04/2019 11:22

Nothing: no difference to Aldi specially selected. Longwayoff please do try the Aldi West Country crunchy cheddar (black packaging) and the red fox crunchy Red Leicester. Better than M&S and much cheaper.

dinkydolphin · 13/04/2019 11:22

I can tell you all completely honestly.

The food you get from M&S is the exact same you get from other supermarkets apart from the colour of the container and the packaging.

They use different language on their packaging to make it seem more high end.

missmouse101 · 13/04/2019 11:22

OP, let us know what you buy and whether it was a hit?

bingowingsmcgee · 13/04/2019 11:23

The fresh loose scones, the loose broccoli, the lemon and parmesan chicken, the proper Greek Yoghurt, the cauliflower cheese, the Cornish cruncher cheddar and the tinned meats. Personally I don't rate the rest of it at all. Lots of the prepared stuff like pizzas etc is too sweet.

Felipa · 13/04/2019 11:57

The veggie Percy Pigs are even nicer than the standard ones I think, more juicy.

Thai style fish cakes...I buy the Pad Thai.noodles to have with them.

SilverySurfer · 13/04/2019 12:00

M&S are great for so many good things. I love their:

Cheesy bread from the bakery
Fruit and veg are really fresh and last well
French sea salted butter
Some of their chocolate is lovely but some contain palm oil so check ingredients if you boycott palm as I do
If you eat fresh cream they do some fab cream cakes
Key lime pie is brilliant
Fresh fish
Profiteroles
Bags of salted nuts
Pork liver pate in a glass pot
Bunch of daffodils in bud - £1

Tippytappytoes · 13/04/2019 12:02

Definitely some cans of the hot chicken curry, perfect for work lunches. Their canned chilli con carne is lovely too.

I can recommend their steaks and I always pick up some chicken Kiev’s (the gastropub style ones). I like the apricot pastries too.

Mostly I recommend looking for any food with the discount labels on. Usually the discounts are brilliant and a good way of trying new things.

longwayoff · 13/04/2019 12:11

Gottheshirt, aldi cheddar is good but marks is better. Aldi aged steak, however, is right up there. Its exceptional quality.

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2019 12:14

I would put money on people not being able to pick M&S stuff out in a blind tasting. Nobody ever could on Eat Well For Less........

OhTheRoses · 13/04/2019 12:16

Percy pigs and walnut whips.

Chewbecca · 13/04/2019 12:19

We like

  • Oakham white chicken breasts individually packaged for the freezer & lochmuir salmon packaged in the same way.
  • strawberry and almond crunch cereal
  • jalapeno and sour cream snacks (huge bag)
  • Percy pigs
  • £1 birthday cards
  • mini chocolate Swiss roll bites
  • profiterole stack
  • frozen choc chip cookies

In general I don't like their desserts, they taste synthetic to me, nothing like a homemade one.

barryfromclareisfit · 13/04/2019 12:19

Ok. I think this thread is some kind of product placement, marketing device. But just in case - M+S used to do cooked bacon, crispy and salty, in the deli section. It would be at least ten years since I had any, maybe twenty, but if they still do it, have that. Thanks for the memory.

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/04/2019 12:19

Supergreen salad
Greek yogurt
The beetroot dip thingy with feta
Butter sultana biscuits
All of the pre cut fruit
Salt and pepper combo crisps

Chewbecca · 13/04/2019 12:20

Oh yes, also tinned curry for emergencies.

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/04/2019 12:20

Oooh, and the battered cauliflower in the vegan section
