Do you know a lottery winner?

PodgeBod · 12/04/2019 23:06

I was just thinking, as I checked my lottery numbers, that given the size of mumsnet a few people should know people who have won jackpots on the lottery or euromillions. So if you know somebody who has won the main prize on the national lottery or euromillions, how have they fared? Was it a "happy ever after"?

Nope!

KitNCaboodle · 12/04/2019 23:09

A friend’s dad got 5 numbers years and years ago. Only got a few grand though.
That’s about it

FuckASilverLining · 12/04/2019 23:16

A local family won £1mill. They stayed in their council house and bought a 2nd hand red vauxhall Zafira and had a massive tigers head spray painted on the bonnet.

I really wish I was kidding. But I'm not...

A friend won something like £365 000 about 15 years ago. LOT of money then when you consider how property prices have soared

PodgeBod · 12/04/2019 23:20

Apparently my paternal grandparents got 5 numbers in a syndicate when the lottery first started but it's never alluded to or mentioned. I guess the money got absorbed into normal spending or their campervans.

QOD
What did she do with it?

RainbowFox · 12/04/2019 23:34

An old colleague won £5mil on the euro millions. Came in at 9am, told me in confidence (we were both supervisors), quit her job and was gone by 11am.

From what I heard afterwards they made some bad financial decisions and had to go back to work eventually. Not sure how true all that was though.

TreacleSmiles · 13/04/2019 00:06

About six years ago a friend posted on fb that she'd got five numbers and it only paid out £250. I was taking the piss a bit when I suddenly realised the numbers matched most of my family birthdays, logged in and checked and yep, I'd also got five numbers.

To add insult to injury, me and dh had just arrived at our remote hilltop hotel for a last weekend break before our first baby was born, we ended up going home that night as bad snow was forecast, I was six months gone and cried all the way home, basically that £250 paid for the ruined trip.

Kind of went off the lottery then. Imagine the odds of me and my friend both getting five numbers on the same draw Sad

Bought a v nice house. Husband killed himself tho. He wasn’t a nice man - at least she’s financially secure I guess

Idontmeanto · 13/04/2019 00:13

There is a huge house locally that is reportedly owned by lottery winners, but I don’t know them personally. I also know of a friend-of-a-friend who had a huge win, several million twenty years ago, they bought friends house for them.

Walnutwhipster · 13/04/2019 00:18

A friend won £1 million a year last Christmas in the lotto raffle. Only a handful of people know.

Burlea · 13/04/2019 00:28

Yes they won nearly 3 million, they are in their 70's. Before they lived on a caravan park home, they bought a flat nearer to town. Their son lived in America and they couldn't afford to fly out to see him and his family they can now. They have 20 really close friends including us and they sent everyone£100. They didn't let it go to their heads he still will only drink halfs.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 13/04/2019 00:30

My uncle won a large amount on the postcode lottery. He moved to Spain.

PH03b3 · 13/04/2019 00:39

Yes -
Changed their lives completely and now live the perfect lifestyle.

Nat6999 · 13/04/2019 00:44

I'm a lottery winner, I was part of a syndicate that won £250k on the Thunderball in 2003. We all got about £15k each. Not enough to change our lives but for me it was welcome as I was 10 weeks pregnant with DS.

MyPatronusIsAnOrca · 13/04/2019 00:51

Someone in my husband’s extended family won a million quite a few years ago.

Made really poor financial decisions and it was all gone within a year or two.

They’re back where they started, back in their old jobs and their old house which they had initially rented out.

wontletmelogin · 13/04/2019 00:54

My auntie and uncle won a few £1ks. I had a colleague who won £1m and a £40k holiday. She started working with us after the win but didn't stay long, she always said she never really needed to work and then she left. I won £33 on euromillions Grin

x2boys · 13/04/2019 01:01

The ex sil of a friend of mine won about 5million on the lottery years ago they did very well.out of it bought a pub I believe and paid for their kids homes good luck to them!,I don't really know her but I know she was a single mum on benefits at one point .before the lottery win.

Zoflorabore · 13/04/2019 01:01

Our old NDN's won just under 2 million 20
years ago, the week I turned 21.

They were already pretty well off and the money caused massive fall outs within the family as one sibling got a lot more than the others.
Another neighbour got married and we all went to the wedding.
Lottery winners put £20 in the card which was way less than other neighbours ( a really small cul de sac where everyone was pretty close ) and a few weeks after the win,
One of their colleagues contacted the local
rag to tell them about the win and said that the woman was about 5 years older than she actually was!
I've heard they have done really well for themselves and I'm FB friends with the son.

Rhynswynd · 13/04/2019 01:04

My brother won the jackpot. Sadly he was part of a large syndicate so ended up with £17000
It was enough for him to do up his flat to get a better price when he sold it.

I remember he phoned me up and said "I've won the lottery" I called bullshit until his wife got on the phone Grin

FrogFairy · 13/04/2019 01:57

Someone local won several million pounds. They gave quite a lot to friends and family and moved to a much nicer area. This was about 20 years ago, was glad for her as she was a skint young mum.

Horsemad · 13/04/2019 08:31

I know a couple who won in excess of £50million. Hasn't changed them but they have lots of holidays!

Also, my mum's neighbours are lottery winners (few million).

lightlypoached · 13/04/2019 08:36

yes. about 20 years ago, friends from work won £3m. they were the loveliest people going and used the money to move back to our area - they'd reluctantly had to move away as they couldn't afford to stay.

I moved away after but I hear that they have now set up an eco camping place in Sussex and are blissfully happy. they were very zen, relaxed people and it made me so happy to hear that they had won.

A girl my Dbro went to school with's family won a decent amount of money, not sure how much exactly but the parents came into school to tell her. She left soon afterwards to go to private school and I'm not sure what became of them.

A lady I knew won about £60k and it paid for her wedding and a new house / car etc but she still had to work.

PodgeBod · 13/04/2019 08:42

Horsemad £50 million is crazy money. Do you know if they have to have security, or do they just carry on as before? I would be scared of being kidnapped.
