Do you know a lottery winner?

I was just thinking, as I checked my lottery numbers, that given the size of mumsnet a few people should know people who have won jackpots on the lottery or euromillions. So if you know somebody who has won the main prize on the national lottery or euromillions, how have they fared? Was it a "happy ever after"?

There is a guy who won £40 million that lives abut twenty minutes away from us and it has ruined his life. And I am quite convinced that the man who bought my mums house won the lottery.

lanbro · 13/04/2019 19:08

One of my employee's grandma has won substantial amounts twice, but is apparently very sensible with it.

My mum's friend won several million, again, didn't go mad but her and her dc are set up nicely.

My grandad got 5 numbers and the bonus ball years ago, only got a few thousand tho.

I haven't checked Wednesday's ticket yet though so fingers crossed!

lanbro · 13/04/2019 19:09

Oh and someone in ex's fishing club won several million almost immediately after his divorce was settled, ex wife was devastated!

Cailleach · 13/04/2019 20:34

An ex-colleague of mine won twice: £70k the first time then £10k two years later.

One of my neighbours won £100k on a scratch card - unfortunately he was an alcoholic and promptly used the cash to drink himself to death; he was dead in under a year...

I don't know but know of a couple who were huge EuroMillions winners. Wrecked their marriage and tore her family apart.

I think I know of these people also.

More money than you could ever spend in a lifetime and not an ounce of true happiness left

Winterdaysarehere · 17/11/2019 22:30

Haven't seen him since a year later.
Him and sm bought a house and prob sleep on the rest...

My mums old boss won quite a few million about 10yrs ago. It was around this time of year and I remember she gave everyone in work an Xmas card that year with £500 in and a note to say thank you etc, even those she didn't know personally got one. My mum was over the moon and thought it was really kind/generous, some ungrateful twats worked out that it cost her less than her interest accrued on the winning amount to have done this and think she should have given everyone more!!

Her and her husband had been married about 20yrs at the time, but divorced a couple of years after the win which I think was down to the pressure of it all.

Their son was really shy apparently and the local rag ran a front page series about him being 'the areas most eligible bachelor' etc and had loads of comments from people he went to school with/knew prior to the win (he was about 18 at the time).

I worked with a guy who's wife won 75k in a work syndicate, they put it towards a bigger house and said it meant they could afford the bigger family they both wanted. Both still work in the same jobs etc and now have 4 lovely kids. Life changing for them in some ways!

I presume you are in Limerick/Clare** Wink

Sad isn't it how many of the bigger winners ended up with less happiness than before.

I'd MUCH prefer it if they massively multiplied your chances of winning, but the winnings were limited to £1million. Once you get into the ridiculously massive amounts, very few people know how to cope, but £1million could give you real choices in life.

I know someone who won twice! Well I know his son. He won a million about 25 years ago, then 500,000 about 15 years ago. He is a consultant and very well off anyway. He spends hundreds of pounds on lottery tickets every month but even so it's amazing to win a big prize twice.

CakeNinja · 18/11/2019 07:55

My grandparents won years ago. 5 numbers but ‘only’ about 60K. Obviously it’s still a fair amount of cash but I always imagined 5 numbers would get you a million!
Anyway, they used it to book a few holidays and took me to Disney aswell. All gone now, they have no regrets. It wasn’t a life changing amount of money, they were already retired with their mortgage paid off. Think they gave my dad and his brother a few grand each too.

beanaseireann · 18/11/2019 18:44

Deadringer
Does he live in the UK or Ireland?
I've heard of someone living in Dublin who won the Irish lottery twice but I don't know them.

TwatCat · 18/11/2019 18:55

My mums neighbour won 3.something million years ago. Bought a big house, and a taxi driver who we all know took them home one night and she showed him around. He said one of the rooms was full of clothes where she couldn't be bothered to wash them, she just bought new clothes.

She literally went from having nothing (and I mean nothing - scrimping to make ends meet nothing) to having millions. I'm not sure where she is now but last I heard she's spent everything.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/11/2019 19:00

I know someone (part of a couple, old enough to be my parents) who won a couple of hundred grand. Payed off loads of debts (them and their adult children) and lived the high life. Now in debt again and moaning about how small their pensions are.

Roselilly36 · 18/11/2019 19:11

I don’t know of anyone personally, but a couple in the small town we live in won big, brought their lucky dip in my local shop. Good luck to them I say.

Cruddles · 18/11/2019 19:31

My dad got 5/6 numbers about four years ago, in a £13m first prize draw. He got the grand sum of........£1700

refusetobeasheep · 18/11/2019 20:37

A friends brother won a million. marriage had broken down and he reckons that after the divorce the win allowed him to have the same standard of living as pre-divorce. No flash car or holiday.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/11/2019 22:19

Friends won £50,000 on a scratchcard. Doesn't sound like a life changing amount of money for some, but this was 25 years ago. At the time they were living in her parents' box room with their baby. We live in the N West and they were able to use it to buy a 3 bed house, to put new windows in it and decorate it and buy a car.

They really deserved it.

Chocolate50 · 18/11/2019 22:27

Old neighbors of mine were part of a syndicate that won the jackpot. They moved....

Woopdewoop · 18/11/2019 22:32

Very outing so limited details. Know someone who won quite a few million. Lived a grand lifestyle. All went tits up, nowt left - a “pittance”.

Lipperfromchipper · 18/11/2019 22:34

Yes I know two, my exes parents and a friend from schools parents. Both won smaller amounts exes parents won 80ishk
And friends parents won 100k.

TheBigFatMermaid · 18/11/2019 23:07

Someone I know one 180k 20 years ago. It was enough for her to buy a house outright and invest 100k.

She was a hard working woman, with trouble with her knees. She paid privately for ops. She was meant to get a bit every month from having invested the remainder after buying the house, but I think she spent the capital, so that didn't happen for long!

Either way, she's better off, through having the house and the knee ops, so I'm pleased for her.

Deadringer · 19/11/2019 10:13

Yes Bean he lives in Dublin.

SouthernComforts · 19/11/2019 10:18

I always wonder, but can never be arsed doing the maths, why we don't ALL know someone who's won a lot of money. With the number of gambling sites, lotteries, scratch cards, bingo halls, competitions etc. Somebody must be winning the jackpots, I don't know anybody who has won more than a grand.
