Do you know a lottery winner?

I was just thinking, as I checked my lottery numbers, that given the size of mumsnet a few people should know people who have won jackpots on the lottery or euromillions. So if you know somebody who has won the main prize on the national lottery or euromillions, how have they fared? Was it a "happy ever after"?

Yes the people that I and ex bought previous house from that they had bought with their winnings.
The couple who me and dp bought our holiday cottage from had been given
£1 million from her parents who had won.
Also colleagues brother who was already very rich. It was a big jackpot but they gave half away to family.
Another who won £500k, went on crazy spending sprees and it went fast and they had to go back to work within two years, claimed boredom.
These are all past winners, it seems that no one wins the jackpot now or rarely. I don't bother doing it.

My nan got 5 numbers and the bonus ball and won £10,000 about fifteen years ago.
She gave £1k each to my mum, my uncle and each of her four grandchildren. I was 17 at the time and used mine to buy my first car.

My last euro millions ticket won the princely sum of £2.70.

Elbeagle · 19/11/2019 10:52

Yes. I don’t know the exact amount but enough to buy 2 multi million pound houses, a smaller holiday home, a boat, put two children through private school and neither have ever worked a day since.

I have only ever played the lottery once in my life and won £13! Perhaps I should do it more often Smile.

I know a couple who sold their house to someone who won £1000,000 on the National Lottery - that's as close as I've come to the big wins.

Time40 · 19/11/2019 10:56

No, sorry - it was a million on a scratchcard.

Winterdaysarehere · 19/11/2019 11:16

Imo my df's win cost him his dgc.

My Nana’s best friend feels her life was ruined by a lottery win

Her sons PIL won massively. They then barely seen their son and DGC because their materialistic side showed through and it just ruined their relationship

Everything they did their son allowed his PIL to do better. They had always taken their DGC to the panto on a set weekend in December. It started as a favour to allow the son and his wife to go Christmas shopping and then became a tradition. It was nothing swanky - pizza then local theatre but it was their wee thing. After the lottery win the PIL organised a surprise swanky weekend to a fancy theatre in London and the son said he couldn’t say no as the PIL had bought them a house. That happened with everything and the son let it and basically drifted away from his parents completely

It’s so sad

No way would it ruin my life! By the time I gave a chunk to all of my massive family and bought each of my 5 DC a house I would have nothing left.

Friends won just over 1 million. They used the money to get married, buy a flat and secure their retirement. They both work in the NHS, one in nursing and one in IT, both in London.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer couple.

Peoples squandering it just shows lack of proper financial knowledge in education.
Why are kids learning about angles, we need to teach them about investments!! Assets! Liabilities.

Depending how much I won /win I would keep the capitol and live off the capital.
No hair brained financial schemes or investments. Houses and tracker funds! Cash.

ODFOkaren · 19/08/2020 16:19

If I won the lottery, I’d tell no one (not that I’ve got any friends to tell BlushGrin), but I would honestly keep it a secret.

Even 20 million, I’m not flash. I’d take the kids and fuck off travelling the world forever more and just buy a small house as a base.

One of my work colleagues won 800k on the national lottery about 8 years ago. Walked out her job the next day
