I'm sick of shaving

I'm sick of being 28 years old and having to shave twice a day

I'm aching. I have to wear inches of makeup to cover my stubble

I'm all bumpy and rashy, and disgusting

Can someone please just recommend the best Philips Lumea? Will it work? I'm confused at the entire range and my head is sore from trying to work out which will be the strongest for my mess of a face, neck, chin and sideburns

Thank you SadBlush

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria was your hair coarse? Which Lumea did you buy?

Just about to look on Groupon

I've emailed this company

Even if you get a PCOS diagnosis OP the GP won't do anything, unless you happen to fall into a lucky postcode. I was even told I'd have to pay for basic fertility treatment if I wanted to go down that route after 6 years of trying.

Back to your original question though, your face looks exactly like mine did before I stopped shaving and went to plucking, so my sympathies to you my love. Plucking takes longer but the regrowth is slower and more uneven, so you don't get such thick stubble.

I really want to bite the bullet and get a lumea too but am baffled by the choice, and as I'm pushing 40 (and can hardly believe I've been fighting this battle for 25 bloody years) I have a good smattering of white hairs so don't know how effective it'll be.

Mother Nature is a cruel mistress.

Ask to see a female gp ideally a younger one, more likely to get sympathy. You need to emphasise how it's affecting your mental health to get treatment on the nhs and will need to be approved by the ccg as it's elective. There's also other guidelines as to who qualifies

you are definitively not being a baby about it, don't feel guilty about being upset!

yes, do book an appointment with another GP - it's disgusting to dismiss someone with a real problem.

You might have to try different solutions, but you find one that works for you eventually, don't despair.

Thank you for being kind ❤️

I'm similar to you OP. I spend a lot of my day with a magnifying mirror, tweezers and a torch. I hate it. I'm 40 now and it's got steadily worse.

I've realised enough is enough and just looked at the lumea again on amazon. Looking at the £468 price tag and reading the reviews.

Because of this thread I just clicked buy now.

Thank you for starting this thread OP. I finally feel in a few days I'm going to be on the path to dealing with this.

I conceive easily and have pcos, although it took me a while to convince a GP I had it.
It does look sore you poor thing. Would a different GP help?

Travis1 · 02/04/2019 15:51

I’ve bought the lumea last night to start.

I have PCOS. This is my neck currently so I completely sympathise. I bought the model 956 it’s currently £380 in Argos.

If you’re on fb have a look at pcos tribe uk. It’s not all about fertility but unfortunately doctors don’t seem interested unless that’s the issue.

I have incredibly bad facial hair, similar to you but also cheeks, lips (boobs and stomach too) best thing for me has been laser, vaniqa, I used to buy it but now have a sympathetic GP who got it on prescription for me, drinking spearmint tea at least twice a day, also for me low carbing and losing some weight has helped too.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 02/04/2019 15:52

It is coarse, but, not in the same pattern as you. I have a smashing tache which is fine with course hairs which sizzle when I zap them cos I'm sometimes a bit lazy about shaving first and a thick tuffet of a goatee.

It worked because I didn't have the time or cash or bravery to go to a IPL. This I could do at home. I got the strongest one I could - it was about 400 quid, but, half price on an amazon sale.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 02/04/2019 15:53

The thing about these problems is that they are common, way more common than you'd think. And it's not going to kill you so it can be really hard to get GP to understand.

PCOS is a risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It should be treated.

Selectioner · 02/04/2019 15:53

This is the one I just bought www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N6SJ4NU/?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Drum2018 · 02/04/2019 15:54

Please try to find another gp. What an absolute bollocks to send you away.

Boysey45 · 02/04/2019 15:55

You've got PCOS or something else that has increased your steroids.
I've got it but had to go to Endocrinology to get a diagnosis. Ask your G.P to refer you, theres not usually a big waiting list to get there, so you get seen quickish.

BinaryStar · 02/04/2019 15:55

Tbh I would go for the cheapest one which seems to be the SC1999. I have it and it is corded which whilst means less flexible in terms of where in house you can use it does mean you don’t have to charge it up.

Appreciate you want to buy today but if you search on
Https:uk.camelcamelcamel.com
And search for it you can see the pricing on Amazon for it moves a LOT.

N2986 · 02/04/2019 15:55

Similar story here with the gp. Diagnosed pcos, won't refer me for anything unless I'm trying to conceive (which I'm not) . Told me my best option was paying for laser hair removal myself. Which I cannot afford so I pluck-every bloody day Angry

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 02/04/2019 15:56

Does anyone get metformin for PCOS?

I read that it can be helpful for weight management. CANNOT get my GP to consider that though, which is frustrating as a colleague is on it and she is thinner than me and has lovely skin and it's really helped her symptoms.

I can't find guidelines to trial it, seems to be just down to your GP.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/04/2019 15:57

Yes, but PCOS sufferers or people with hormone conditions often have very sensitive skin

Yes, I know this only too well. Even more reason to find something that doesn't irritate.

FuckSakeFuckOffFelicia · 02/04/2019 15:59

Thank you, I'm reading everything

I'm extremely embarrassed talking about it, but I'd rather talk about it here than have to look at myself in the mirror Sad

I really recommend the electric women’s face razors on amazon, bout 13 pounds last time I bought one. Use twice a day and no rash. Lumea did not work for me.

Yewtown · 02/04/2019 16:01

Hi Op. I was exactly like you if not worse. I got the Lumea advanced and I am now hair free. The hair reduction was noticeable after about 3 uses. The trick is to use it every couple of weeks at first so you are zapping the new hair growth. It was without doubt the best thing I ever bought. Just remember to charge it once a month.

Travis1 · 02/04/2019 16:01

@vivarium I was but because we're trying to conceive the GP took me off it. You should be tested for insulin resistance first. The other thing to consider is self treatment with something like Myo Inisitol. Swansons or Zita West though. None of the dodgy ones you find on Amazon.

Otbbto · 02/04/2019 16:02

Does anyone get metformin for PCOS?

My gp brought it up, but then said she couldn't prescribe its only something the gynocologist could give me and the gyno is really rubbish and dismissive, basically gave me a prescription for the pill and was like off you go Hmm

Nameusernameuser · 02/04/2019 16:02

I can't remember whether it was mumsnet or Reddit, but a stripper made a post or a blog post about how she keeps her bikini line stubble free and shaves every day without ever seeing any regrowth. If you Google it you might find it, I'm sure it involved shaving cream and rubbing alcohol for after the shave.

SavoyCabbage · 02/04/2019 16:04

https://www.philips.co.uk/c-m-pe/hair-removal/lumea-ipl

Halfway down the page there is a chart which shows the different Lumea models.

I've got one and it's definitely worked for me. The good thing is you can keep shaving between times.
