It’s a Northern European thing - pps have mentioned Germany and the Netherlands and in Sweden you buy your “Easter Sticks” (branches in bud) and hang little wooden eggs from them. I think it’s because the start of spring is so lovely when winter is long and dark, so am surprised it hasn’t traditionally been a thing in Britain! A few rather rude previous posters who don’t seem very aware of other cultures op!

PhillipeFellope · 24/03/2019 07:14

For me Easter is about Jesus being crucified, but more importantly, that he rose again! That's what is the celebration!

I've never decorated for Easter before (beyond stuff made at junior church etc as a child) but I've got some reusable bunny and carrot decorations from TK Maxx this year and I'm going to put them out with DSs Easter present/egg (Nothing of which are actually to do with Jesus obviously) I'll also get a bunch of tulips or fresh flowers or something. Why? Because it's nice and I want to, it's. Not compulsory Grin We'll also go to church and then have spring lamb for Sunday tea with my family.

Zoflorabore · 24/03/2019 07:16

I've heard it all now.....

Sparklingbrook · 24/03/2019 07:17

I have no Easter 'decks' or (decorations), and no plan to get any. It's not a thing in my house.

So, so glad I don't have to make Easter bonnets any more too.

missmouse101 · 24/03/2019 07:18

Never OP. You've been had if you think you should be doing this. Another way to wring money out of you. A vase of daffodils and eggs on Sunday is plenty, just as it's always been.

ilovepinkgin33 · 24/03/2019 07:20

Easter decorations are appropriate only for church and a display in school, why the fuck would you want to put Easter decorations up ??? Madness

HarrySnotter · 24/03/2019 07:29

Lots of people have roast lamb at Easter (and lots of other times) OP, it doesn't make it a 'mini Christmas'. Whatever traditions you have with your family are great and entirely up to you, but the title of your thread makes the assumption that everyone puts up Easter decorations as par for the course. If you are in the UK (?) you must know this is not the case.

Sparklingbrook · 24/03/2019 07:31

Bleurgh to roast lamb.

Don't think Easter Dinner is a thing here either. Do you have to have Easter Eve Boxes too? Confused

Mog6840 · 24/03/2019 07:32

Wow....people are being so mean and negative about a few decorations. Nobody's saying you have to do it. What is wrong with wanting to put up a twig tree with some little hanging eggs and a few bunnies? My child loves it and it looks nice when family come over the Easter period.
I put them up at the start of the school holidays OP. Enjoy your lovely decorations.

anniehm · 24/03/2019 07:38

Is this for real? I've never heard of Easter wreaths, trees, lights... are you in the U.K.? I buy Easter napkins for tea on Easter Sunday but dd takes it super seriously so no meat on Friday or Saturday (she's veggie anyway) and she's at church a lot (she a chorister). We might meet my sil and nephew for an egg hunt, mine are big but it's a dog friendly one in the woods so canine baby will enjoy it.

PhillipeFellope · 24/03/2019 07:38

Easter decorations are appropriate only for church and a display in school, why the fuck would you want to put Easter decorations up??

Because they go nicely with the scale size crucifixion scene!!

Or, what's more likely, because I think its a nice idea and I want to? Grin Why does anybody do anything?

Toddlerteaplease · 24/03/2019 07:39

I don't mean to be a Debbie downer but traditionally you don't celebrate until He is risen*
I'm sure Jesus would love an Easter tree.*

This!

MrsTommyBanks · 24/03/2019 07:39

maras2 I remember the sinister Easter bonnet thread.
Pretty sure it's in classics now.

LadyPenelope68 · 24/03/2019 07:40

You don't decorate for Easter! Easter tree??? wtf!

MrsTommyBanks · 24/03/2019 07:44

Posted too soon...

I've never done decorations. When I was a child (70s) Easter was always a big extended family turkey dinner and a fuck ton of chocolate. New outfits from Grandparents. And a good film on the telly.
When mine where young it was always roast lamb and a fuck ton of chocolate.
Now it's usually just a long weekend to get stuck into a DIY project.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 24/03/2019 07:44

We should have an Easter bonnet day! Like Christmas jumper day only everyone wears decorated bonnets.

icelollycraving · 24/03/2019 07:50

I decorate usually on the last day of school before Easter so it’s all done when Ds comes home. Each to their own.

Bluelonerose · 24/03/2019 07:54

Easter decs Confused
Suppose I could put a pile of stones in front of the door to block us in

fussychica · 24/03/2019 07:54

I've never done it but my neighbour is into it in a big way. All her garden trees are decorated and her home. She has given me Easter presents which I now put up as I'd feel mean not to and they are lovely but I wouldn't buy more myself.

BoogleMcGroogle · 24/03/2019 07:54

Gosh, the spirit of bleak Dickensian Britain with its dark satanic mills and cabbage for breakfast truely is alive and well on this thread.

We've had Easter decorations up since 1986, when some Dutch friends bought them for my family as a gift. We have a few of these at home now, and a few more bought over the years. This is done all over Northern Europe. It costs very little and is a cheery way to herald in the new life of springtime. We also have a door wreath, bunting and a big jar of daffodils. Why wouldn't we want to adopt the tradition?

We put the tree ( sticks in bud) up on Good Friday (I'm not really Christian, but my husband and kids are more so, I get that this is a sad day). On Easter Sunday we go to church and then have a lovely lunch of paschal lamb, a bottle of good wine and an egg hunt.

Go on, MN's of Puritan persuasion, get a bit Dutch and give it a go 😉

ALemonyPea · 24/03/2019 07:59

We have a life size model of Jesus on the cross that DH proudly puts up in the front garden. Jesus has a sign around his neck saying "Easter bunny please stop here"

landoflostcontent · 24/03/2019 08:00

I do have Easter decorations and the grandchildren love them, partly because they are up for such a short time (small tree with glass painted eggs and a rather over the top Easter Bunny Grin ) However I have a vast internal struggle over when to put them out. I am very old and can remember when I was a child everyone in the village would draw their blinds for three hours on Good Friday from 12 - 3 so don't feel right putting them out until Sunday. Absolutely no help at all I know Smile

Maykid · 24/03/2019 08:02

We also have an easter tree of forsythia and willow branches ( tasteful artificial) hung with eggs. Surrounded by German wooden bunnies and chicks. I love it. And my kids are grown up now so I don't even have the excuse of doing it for the kids. I do it a week before easter until a week after.

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/03/2019 08:03

I don't decorate.

The village churchgoers do a procession from the church with a massive crucifix and come and stand outside my house holding the crucifix aloft. I think they sing songs, there's certainly a lot of preaching.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 24/03/2019 08:08

Why is nobody attaching photos of their Easter decorations?

I'm crap for doing stuff like that, but I'd love to see other peoples'!
