If you won millions in the lottery....

Would you work your notice?

I am a teacher so would feel bad on the staff and students if I just upped and left but my notice is 8 weeks! If I won the lottery I would probably work half my notice as a courtesy.

DH said he would quit on the spot (office job) but would feel bad and give his colleagues a few grand each as a sorry!

How about you?

I would buy my place of work and sack a few people Grin so I wouldn't quit at all.

thenightsky · 23/03/2019 18:29

Depends on the job and the boss. I've worked for some lovely people who I would like to keep as friends, so wouldn't let them down. In fact I'd probably stay and help them find my replacement if that's what they wanted.

My last job however... nah. I'd quit on the spot and tell my 'boss' what I really thought of his wankery ways. (I did kind of do that actually - I took early retirement and was VERY honest in my exit interview).

SamBaileys · 23/03/2019 18:29

I would probably still work where I do..I'm part time anyway and I love it. I think I would have to do something with my time!

SewButtons · 23/03/2019 18:30

I don’t think I’d quit my job. Might try and cut my hours though or take an extended holiday.
If I did decide to quit I definitely would work my notice and probably more if needed but I work as a nanny so probably more emotionally invested in my job than some people, and I would be totally screwing up my bosses careers if I quit on the spot.

Rockbird · 23/03/2019 18:32

I'd carry on. I only work part time and I really enjoy it so I wouldn't quit. Plus I work with a great team and we have a good laugh.

Mrscog · 23/03/2019 18:35

Surely as a teacher you could just give the school 4K to cover the supply costs? That’s what I’d do!

GooodMythicalMorning · 23/03/2019 18:36

No but then Im a cleaner so not the highest ranking person!

hidinginthenightgarden · 23/03/2019 18:37

Not a school Mrscog and the management would probably spend it on utter shit!
Maybe I could buy the team I work with the ipads they have been promised for years!

Alarae · 23/03/2019 18:37

I wouldn't leave my job as I genuinely enjoy it. Maybe drop a day from full time to make a long weekend all the time.

Would definitely book a fab holiday though.

Smileymoon · 23/03/2019 18:37

I would probably work my notice but I certainly wouldn't carry on working.

safariboot · 23/03/2019 18:38

Yes, and I'd consider keeping the job. At the very least I'd stay on good terms.

screamifyouwant · 23/03/2019 18:40

Not after this week they can F off .Grin
I'd probably wait until the money was in my account then send a email to say I'm not coming back .

CalamityJune · 23/03/2019 18:41

I think I would work my notice yes. I'd want to make my next steps quite carefully and neither would I want all and sundry knowing I'd won.

I'd like to keep working but not in the job I do now. It's too inconvenient.

hidinginthenightgarden · 23/03/2019 18:41

I am surprised so many would carry on working. I crave the freedome to come and go as I please.
I would do something like supply work so I could work enough bot to be bored but not too much I would feel trapped.
Life would be much easier!

OP posts:
hidinginthenightgarden · 23/03/2019 18:43

Calamity I said the same about people knowing I had won. I don't get why so many people go in the papers!

OP posts:
MightyAtlantic · 23/03/2019 18:44

Yes, I would. My team is down to me and one other colleague at the minute so if I just left I think she'd want to kill me! Grin

LadyFlumpalot · 23/03/2019 18:44

I would but I'd spend it working from home.

When I say "home", I do of course mean "my yacht in the Maldives"

CalamityJune · 23/03/2019 18:45

@hidinginthenightgarden For me, working gives me the benefit of enforced social time! You wouldn't know it if you met me at work but I am quite introverted and don't know many people where I live, so I would find it hard to make a new social life without work as a bonding factor.

I also like the structure and feeling part of a team. Part of me would love to be self employed but I would miss cameraderie.

screamifyouwant · 23/03/2019 18:46

I'd also go no publicity too but dh said he would go public because everyone would find out .
I'd buy myself a modest car not a fancy sports car and a holiday and decide what to do . I'd take great pleasure treating family and friends and some charities close to my heart .
Not that I've given it a lot of thought Grin

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/03/2019 18:46

nope I’d leave on the spot!!!

LindaLa · 23/03/2019 18:54

After I'd done the usual, buy homes for family, holiday, car etc, I'd but a massive block of studio flats/bedsits.

I'd fill it with ex-military and hassle councils on their behalf for permanent housing.

It's win win for me, ex-military off the street and I get to bollock people!

Reddragonqueen · 23/03/2019 18:57

I wouldn't quit, atleast not straight away. I don't think I'd want to tell anyone so I'd keep my part time job as a cover

BentNeckLady · 23/03/2019 19:01

I’d carry on working for my company but would go very part time and go back to my old role which was less stress and more fulfilment but less money ( which is why I don’t still do it)

I’d just ask to take a year sabbatical which I’d spend travelling and moving house etc. Then life would carry on as normal.

blackcoffeeinbed · 23/03/2019 19:11

We have this conversation at work a lot! I would work until the money hits my bank account and I've said over and over if I was lucky enough to have a BIG win I would be on the first plane out of here to Jamaica for a lovely long hot and relaxing holiday where I will lay beside a pool or on the beach deciding what I'm going to do next with my multiple millions. As far as I'm concerned they have my notice of this already should it ever happen haha.

If I was to win 1million, I don't feel that would be enough to just jack my job in as it wouldn't last a lifetime, so I would continue working but would use the money to set up my own business.

MotherOfTheNoise · 23/03/2019 19:11

I wouldn't tell anyone and I'd carry on doing what I do, because I do genuinely love it, even though it's one of the worst industries to work in (hospitality). I'd just get a decent car, sort friends and family out if I could and take a holiday somewhere nice once every year! We're quite simple me and my DH!
