If you won millions in the lottery....

Would you work your notice?

I am a teacher so would feel bad on the staff and students if I just upped and left but my notice is 8 weeks! If I won the lottery I would probably work half my notice as a courtesy.

DH said he would quit on the spot (office job) but would feel bad and give his colleagues a few grand each as a sorry!

How about you?

I'm a teacher and I love my school but I'd only work my notice if it was the run up to exams. I'd also gift some to the school so they can buy all the gluesticks iPads

MintyCedric · 23/03/2019 19:19

Not sure. I wouldn't want to drop my colleagues in the proverbial, but I have a very, very unwell dad and a struggling at the moment, so being able to drop everything and just support them wpuld be very tempting.

Freshprincess · 23/03/2019 19:22

I wouldn't quit. I want to have that moment of being in a really awful meeting and flouncing out with a big 'you can stick your online portal up your arse' Obviously it would have to be 'never work again' kind of money.

Well that's definitely my plan too now Grin!

SrSteveOskowski · 23/03/2019 20:48

Would I work my notice? Would I fairy cakes! Grin

ASauvignonADay · 23/03/2019 20:52

If carry on with my job. I think I'd split my money and give some to charity/worthwhile local cause (probably related to work)

CountFosco · 23/03/2019 20:58

I'm a scientist and love my job so wouldn't quit no. Pay off the mortgage, loads in savings for us and the kids and very naice holidays from now on and lovely presents for those I care about.

SoMuchToBits · 23/03/2019 20:58

I work on a busy hospital ward, so I would work my notice because otherwise my colleagues would have to pick up the slack with not enough staff. I wouldn't wish that on them - it's hard enough when we are fully staffed and even harder when we are understaffed.

I would leave though, so I didn't have to work shifts and could plan my life more. But I would probably take up some form of part time voluntary job instead.

Pigwitch · 23/03/2019 21:00

Yes I would. I work on an intensive care unit so it would be unfair to my colleagues to just up and leave.

MidsomerBurgers · 23/03/2019 21:06

I would definitely work my notice, but as front-line NHS, I'm not sure I'd fully leave as I love my job so much. I would definitely reduce my hours to start with though. And treat my colleagues and buy some new equipment and training that we cannot afford.

ShellieEllie · 23/03/2019 21:10

I wouldn't want anyone to know I'd won so would just hand in my notice and work until the end of that. In the meantime could have a few weekends away at a luxury hotel whilst planning what to do with the money. Of course if the work syndicate were to win it would be a whole different ballgame!

SoMuchToBits · 23/03/2019 21:13

Interesting to see similar answers from other NHS staff. And yes, Midsomer, I would see about providing equipment etc which the ward/hospital couldn't afford.

ooooohbetty · 23/03/2019 21:16

Yes I'd work my notice. I couldn't leave my colleague in the lurch. Even if I loved my job I'd give it up. I don't think it's fair to keep working if you win millions. Leave your job open for someone who is unemployed.

Blankiefan · 23/03/2019 21:18

Nope. I have 4 months notice so no way.

I'd graciously go in for a days handover maybe...

drquin · 23/03/2019 21:30

I think I would work my notice ...... as my great lottery win plan involves telling as few people as possible, and attracting as little attention as possible, so just not going back to work doesn't really fit in with that logic!

BellMcEnd · 23/03/2019 21:37

Hmmmmm. Tricky one. I mostly love my job and get a lot of satisfaction from it but it’s becoming harder and harder to do thanks to the twats in government. I also love most of my colleagues. I think I’d probably hand in my notice as I can’t work any fewer hours in my role. I’d prob just pick up a couple of shifts a month to keep my hand in but not during the school holidays as we’d be on safari or on some other exciting holiday.

Siiiiigh. I can wish!

Chickenwing · 23/03/2019 21:46

If I won the lottery no one at work would ever hear from me again. I dream about it all the time Grin

Ariela · 23/03/2019 21:47

I'd work my notice, it's only a small company so I'd feel bad just upping sticks and going. However I'd definitely move house to somewhere nicer, so I'd be gone regardless!

feelingsinister · 23/03/2019 21:48

I would work my notice because I would be leaving people in the lurch otherwise and I would want to make sure I did a full handover and had proper endings for those I work with. I probably wouldn't give up work completely tbh but might retrain or work very part time.

I need some structure in my life or I would spend all my days in pyjamas eating crisps and watching Netflix. 😄

Betaboo · 23/03/2019 21:50

I would quite immediately, but would help out with the transition to a new recruit, I would not leave them in the lurch.

Andonandonan · 23/03/2019 21:54

I’m also a teacher. I’ve thought about this and yes, I would. It’s too hard to find decent supply, not fair on the class etc. And somehow knowing I was about to leave would make it all easier!

I’d also want to keep the win secret so up & leaving wouldn’t help that.

But I would arrange a huge donation to the school (anonymously) as it so desperately needs better funding.

C0untDucku1a · 23/03/2019 21:56

I would first begin to reveal my cover. An elaborate story of small inheritance invested in a Business that is doing well and want to focus on it. I would ask for the odd afternoon off to attend a business meeting, i would have loud business type conversations, mention the lack of time i now have, mention successful contracts won. Then hand my notice in to devote my time to my business.

LynetteScavo · 24/03/2019 08:07

I would work my four weeks notice.

I would keep it a secret about my winnings.

But I would buy so sort of huge weird outdoor sculpture as a leaving present so they never forgot me.

Rockbird · 24/03/2019 09:47

CalamityJane that's mainly why I wouldn't leave. I'm an introvert with ASD and that's fine up to a point but I know that I'm better if I have some contact with people, much as I might not feel like it. I go to work to be with my colleagues and because I love the children. Really nothing to do with the pittance salary.

DrCoconut · 24/03/2019 10:21

I'd probably email them from Mauritius to tell them I'm not coming in any more Grin
