Carrying on from the Tastiest Protestant teaybake thread - I thought I would start a new thread now, so there is no risk of us running out of space and having a traybake-less interregnum!

I had a nightmare last night, I'm gagging even now just to think of it. I'd made a chocolate tiffin tray bake - but with a layer of ham half way through the biscuit layer. I'd also put cheese in the chocolate topping but apparently that was ok because it had melted Hmm oh but the ham was gross Grin

Nigella has a wheaten scone recipe, @evilharpy. Or there’s a WI recipe somewhere.

SDTG I had a crack at throwing some together without a recipe. They were very nice but missing something which I think is a bit of treacle, I'll add that next time.

@LeekMunchingSheepShagger Surely tha’ would be an ecumenical batter.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 01/04/2019 00:41

Would it be a bit too high falutin to ask for any traybake recipes for 6 lovely duck eggs I've just acquired?

I baked with stork for the first time since I was a child last week. Dh got his annual birthday coffee cake (he's the only weirdo in the house who likes it). It was definitely lighter than the last one I made may also be influenced by my actually paying attention while it was in the oven

Any Norn Irn residents care to comment on the Derry Girls scone/scone pronunciation hooha? Twitter was aflame!

MsMamaNature · 01/04/2019 00:52

I'm North Coast, Co. Antrim and we pronounce it like the Derry Girls - to rhyme like gone. Only ever heard it pronounced the other way when I lived in England - it always sounded so much posher!

FlaviaAlbia · 01/04/2019 08:38

Yeah, rhymes with gone too, I've never heard anyone say it the other way here.

MotherForkinShirtBalls I think duck eggs would be wasted in traybakes tbh! Much better in cakes or for breakfast, unless you actually keep ducks of course Grin

h0rsewithn0name that's tricky without the base. Any memory at all? Soft or crispy?

ForalltheSaints · 01/04/2019 08:44

Other religions and Christian traditions are available. Given the Northern Ireland protestant tradition of saying No to almost everything, do they ever get eaten?

beanaseireann · 01/04/2019 10:49

MsMamaNature
Dubliner here- I pronounce it scone as in bone.

Hollyhobbi · 02/04/2019 02:23

Not from Dublin originally but living here the past 30 odd years and lived in 4 different counties in Leinster previously and I pronounce scone to rhyme with bone too. As does my Cork mother and Donegal dad!

MsMamaNature · 02/04/2019 14:45

@beanaseireann I have family in Dublin - out in Dalkey. They were born up here in the North and moved to Dublin about 20 years ago for work. They still pronounce it to rhyme with gone - so our rough ways in the North are slowly infecting the rest of the country!

beanaseireann · 02/04/2019 16:21

I'm always fascinated that Northeners say Mummy as a matter of course.
Only very posh people down south would say Mummy.
Or people trying to be posh.
Otherwise it's Mum, Mammy, Ma ( hate it ) or Mam Smile

MsMamaNature · 02/04/2019 17:39

beansaseirann I think the mummy issue depends upon the area you grow up in. For me, mummy was only used up to about the end of primary school then it just became mum. It happened naturally - no one ever said don't use the word mummy. My kids have been the same. I know a few people who were brought up in Belfast and they still say mummy in their 30s and 40s. My SIL is from Ballymena and calls her mum ma which I hate - it just doesn't sound like a word to describe your mum (if that makes sense).

MsMamaNature · 02/04/2019 17:41

Apologies for spelling your name wrong!

beanaseireann · 02/04/2019 18:27

MsMamaNature
As you can see from my post I hate Ma too.
I know 40 + year olds who call their Mum Mummy in the North and I wouldn't consider them posh or affected but here in Dublin it would be.

Hollyhobbi · 03/04/2019 23:29

One of my DDs called me ma once! I told her I wasn't a sheep! I don't mind mammy or mum or even mam! I tend to get called mammy when they're in trouble or looking for something from me!! Anyone ever get called mom or mommy?

DateLoaf · 03/04/2019 23:35

Good Lord how did I only just find this thread.. the joy of traybakes.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/04/2019 16:09

I’m going to resurrect this thread, and post a picture of the cake display at our lovely very local cafe - for your delectation and delight.

Today they had Nutella brownies, Creme Egg brownies, chocolate orange brownies, and white chocolate blondies - amongst other delights.

They look amazing! I meant to make cream egg brownies today but the weather is so nice I just did some quick rice crispie nests with mini eggs instead 🙂

Somewhereovertheroad · 02/05/2019 10:31

Parody piece

You might need to be from Norn Iron (Northern Ireland) to get the humour in this.

hoping the link works

Galvantula · 02/05/2019 10:54

Also Scottish traybake fan here.

Did yous get the Paradise Slices recipe on the other thread? I've not read it all yet. When i left home my mum made me a recipe book with all her old stuff in case i needed to make emergency rock buns or a tray bake as a student. It definitely has that in it, although it's called something different in my book, named after a family friend. E.g. Doreen's Stuff as apparently that's what i called it.

My fave tray bakes as a child were one with a baked chocolate base, then mint icing then scotbloc 'chocolate' melted on top. Also a weird coconut one off Blue Peter with lemon icing.

❤ traybakes

PhillipeFellope · 02/05/2019 11:22

I've just found this thread, and the previous one. I'm going to blow my Mam's church craft group 'Fifty shades of Grey' (because of their hair colours) away with some of these recipes! I'll practise on them before the church fair. It's C of E though, does anyone mind? Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/05/2019 13:15

I'm sure God will forgive you, @PhillipeFellope - I have heard she's very forgiving, especially where cake is concerned!!

My DBro asked about Fifteens after I mentioned the first thread to him. He lived in NI for a few years, and got to like things like this. I've now bookmarked the recipes off the threads and plan to try some this weekend. Fingers crossed he likes them. Grin

beanaseireann · 03/05/2019 18:08

Has anyone got the recipe for the traybake with Raspberry and Coconut Ruffles please.
I hope they are the right sweets. I tracked them down in an Irish equivalent of a pound shop.
