Carrying on from the Tastiest Protestant teaybake thread - I thought I would start a new thread now, so there is no risk of us running out of space and having a traybake-less interregnum!

This is what a good old Norn Iron coffee morning looks like

Protestant traybakes and ecumenical baking of all sorts,

Is it a sin to make protestant tray bakes during Lent if you're a lapsed catholic? Fed up of donuts and more donuts. Every single shop, supermarket, stall in Dublin sells the fecking things! Can't even escape them in work! Although I can say that Krispy Kreme ones are awful, very dry altogether and Offbeat donuts are just about passable! Is there a glut of them up the North as well or have yet managed to avoid them?

Minesapineappledelight
do you mean the Rally cookbooks? I have a yellow one & a blue one... I was tempted out of lurkdom by the traybake thread and can't share any photos Sad

Definitely a glut of them Hollyhobbi, they've replaced the cupcake shops. Goodness knows what trend will be next..

Bake early, bake often Grin

I'm in Dublin Hollyhobbi and I was just complaining about the doughnut situation to my DH last month. I'm not a big doughnut fan anyway, but the only true doughnut IMO is a jam-filled, granulated sugar-coated one from the Bewleys of my childhood, although Dunnes 4 for €3 jam doughnuts are acceptable in a pinch. That's the one thing that you can't get in a fancy doughnut shop, it's all oreo cream or salted caramel, and if any of them are sugared instead of iced it's always with powdered sugar not granulated. Where's the crunch?

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 27/03/2019 11:25

I've just read both threads and am confused. If I, as an atheist, make a Protestant traybake, does the traybake become atheist or do I become a Protestant? Confused

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 27/03/2019 11:30

Leek, if you eat the traybake and you don't feel an unspoken but deeply felt suspicion of the Pope and an interest in very long sermons that just reiterating the same point over and over, then you've probably got the ingredients wrong and it has turned into an atheist traybake, or at the very least an agnostic one.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 28/03/2019 17:12

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar I’d say you are about right with that

Love the unspoken but deeply felt suspicion of the Pope

Having just gone through a bereavement I can confirm the traybake is alive and well. So much so we had to take two huge boxes to the local food bank.

Minesapineappledelight · 29/03/2019 16:20

Sundaybakes yup. I made a fruit and nut truffle slice thing from it. It was amazing. Sliced smoothly into squares, but retained a pleasing squidginess

cannycat20 · 29/03/2019 17:01

Oh no. You have now introduced me to the traybake spinner. This means I won't get anything else done for the rest of the day...

banivani · 30/03/2019 08:50

Sorry for your loss, Redbreast. Flowers

Two questions: Are there opinions whether ‘tis better to make scones by rubbing fabin flour by hand or by food processor? My son (12) is watching Derry Girls and wondered what the legal drinking age in NI was then (and is now, if different)?

MadeinBelfast · 30/03/2019 09:30

I always run the flour in by hand but I've had great scones in lots of cafes and I imagine they just shove everything in the blender if they're making hundreds!

As far as I know the legal drinking age has always been 18, in line with the UK.

beela · 30/03/2019 09:42

@Howyoualldoworkme I've just made that salted tiffin recipe that you posted up thread. Omg, it is ridiculously good! I made it for a cake stall tomorrow but it may not last until then...

Howyoualldoworkme · 30/03/2019 10:01

beela I'm so pleased you liked it!
I first made it for a talk I gave on taste deception and strange food pairings and it's been my most requested recipe!
Funnily enough I made it this week too as I was dropping into my old workplace for a visit. It barely lasted a teabreak Grin

banivani · 30/03/2019 12:53

Thank you Made! I’ll let him know, he was concerned about Michelle’s drinking habits ;)

notapizzaeater · 30/03/2019 12:57

Ooh I'm going to unleash my nigella and make some gluten free Traybakes 😀

h0rsewithn0name · 30/03/2019 13:06

I love this thread!

We had an amazing holiday in Northern Ireland last year, and I still drool over the bounty cake we had. I can't remember the base, but the middle was just like a soft bounty, topped with chocolate.

Can anyone help? I'm desperate!

LoveYouLovely · 30/03/2019 13:53

I've just been shooed out of the kitchen so my DSs can make some Fifteens for me for mothers' day.

Can you remember where you got it? Even what town? Someone will probably know what you're talking about if you can identify the source. Smile

evilharpy · 30/03/2019 14:06

I’m in desperate need of a date & wheaten scone.

h0rsewithn0name · 30/03/2019 14:08

Thank you Isabelle. I'm pretty sure it was in Ballycastle, in a cafe called Captain's.

Excited now!
