20 year old daughter will not turn loud music down, how would you deal with it?

Because I clearly can't fuck up again or it will be continuously thrown in my face. When she was about 11 and my partner hit her on her leg, I said he would never dare do that again or he would be gone. He did it again and I told him to get out this was around a couple months later. Every time we argue she uses it to try and get to me "you let him hit me again". I know it's to make me feel bad but I said I was sorry but I thought he wouldn't. She then just goes on about it saying once is too much etc etc etc she now has gone to her room and has her music pretty loud, I told her to turn it down and she says "no" so I said well you'll need to leave if you can't respect the house. She says "I have to leave? Erm no mum, I'm sure I'll get a second chance too, maybe even more considering what I'm doing isn't illegal". It's a co stand battle. Is told her if she hates and resents me so much, why bother living with me. She says where else do I expect her to go when she is a "poor student" please tell me she is rude and obnoxious? I do what I can for her

Cut the cable.

TapasForTwo · 16/03/2019 18:15

Why is she living at home if she is a student?

NC4Now · 16/03/2019 18:16

Trip switch

7yo7yo · 16/03/2019 18:16

Yep. Say you’ve had your second, third and fourth chances so you can leave.

Champagnebrain · 16/03/2019 18:16

Take the fuse out of the main meter

Bigearringsbigsmile · 16/03/2019 18:16

yes trip switch
manipulative l;ittle cow

MrsJayy · 16/03/2019 18:17

Buy her earphones tell her to use them has she always treated you with contempt ?

PristineCondition · 16/03/2019 18:17

Electric switches tripped in her room

LoubyLou1234 · 16/03/2019 18:17

Not all students live away from home....

10IAR · 16/03/2019 18:17

Also, you stuck to your word. If he did it again he'd be out and he was. It sounds like she's held this over you for the last 9 years and used it to control you.

So she plays on it, but in doing so she has become the abuser. Coercive control.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 16/03/2019 18:18

Take out the fuse from the fuse box.

She’s taking the piss OP. Remind her that you did make him leave for being unreasonable and you’ll happily make her leave if she doesn’t start to behave correctly too.

She’s a grown adult ffs

Theunreasonableone · 16/03/2019 18:18

Pack her stuff up and chuck it out of the front door closely followed by her.

wittyusermane · 16/03/2019 18:20

Would buying her a pair of really nice headphones help? I realise you don't want to reward the bad behaviour but sounds like you are both at a bit of an impasse and maybe some nice headphones might be a sort of peacemaking compromise?

I don't have teens yet though so my advice could be totally shit Grin

Sirzy · 16/03/2019 18:22

Stop letting her emotionally blackmail you!

BentNeckLady · 16/03/2019 18:22

I’d flip the socket switch on my consumer unit.

MrsJayy · 16/03/2019 18:22

Tell her your ex was a terrible person but he isn't there any more she is taking the piss she is a grown woman acting like a 14 year old

insancerre · 16/03/2019 18:23

Turn off the electricity
With mine I can turn off upstairs but leave downstairs on

PickAChew · 16/03/2019 18:24

I'd tell her that it's obviously time for her to go and rent a room, elsewhere.

BentNeckLady · 16/03/2019 18:25

Acting like a 14 year old? My 14 year old wouldn’t dare because as knows she’d have no means to play music/watch tv/browse the web for long if she did Confused

AuntVanya · 16/03/2019 18:25

She sounds very unpleasant from what you have told us. Behaviour you would expect from a young teenager not a student.
If this is indicative of her overall attitude, I would wait until you've both calmed down and then tell her you are not prepared to be treated with such disdain. This is her very last chance. Any more and she moves out. You could pay her deposit to ensure it happens.

midsomermurderess · 16/03/2019 18:26

She's being abusive and manipulative and you sound as if, you are scared of her. She's 20, time to find her own place to live.

ArchieTheGuineaPig · 16/03/2019 18:26

She tells me she has problems with guys because of it, says that's why it bothers her so much and she can't help but think it is a bit because of me. I try listening to her but I tell her I can't change and ask what she wants, she says she doesn't want anything from me she just wants me to stop being "rude" if I ever mention it. I'm not rude I just tell her it was years ago and her life has been good now and I stuck to my word.

What cable do I cut??? She is playing it from her laptop.

Can I really just throw her out? Genuinely wondering... wouldn't hesitate to be honest but don't want that to be added to me being awful.

She's at home because she is actually doing her a levels, she failed them after some problems which she did see help for and I remember the lady she saw spoke to me and said "I think you need to understand it did really affect her" I have felt bad since then, I didn't think much of it before that.

She blames me for failing them... says I should never have got with him, he was controlling and "shouty".

I really don't know what to say, this was so many years ago. Is it really that which was the problem? Honestly?

Tell her that if she has that many issues as a result then she obviously needs to seek counselling and you will help her find some.

FairfaxAikman · 16/03/2019 18:29

If she's using a laptop confiscate the charger. Watch her panic as the battery runs down.

ArchieTheGuineaPig · 16/03/2019 18:31

Can I take her charger? That she bought? She would probably go find something of mine to take and say something sarcastic... god I really think throwing her out is the best thing but the problem is she has no where to go. She would literally be on the streets and although yes she is an adult, I don't think she would cope with that, especially with no money. Sigh
