What are some food combinations that you don't understand?

I have never really understood the combination of moules et frites. I quite like fries and I love mussels but the two don't really work together for me. I'd prefer some nice bread to dip in the sauce.

A pub I was in recently offered chips with their potato pie. Now I'm more than happy to double carb but chips with a sliced potato pie?

Mac and cheese as a side confuses me too. I love macaroni cheese/mac and cheese but it doesn't seem to work as a side dish to me. Perhaps I've been missing out all these years.

Which food combinations confuse or disgust you?

Fruit in cheese.
Fruit in stews.
Fruit in curries.
Fruit on pizza except for that one time with tuna and tinned peaches when I was very very drunk

Obvs tomato doesn't count as a fruit in this context.

Red wine with hot, spicy food. The flavours clash horribly on my palate, yet I see people apparently enjoying them together.

Beans with gravy 🤢

Baked beans with jacket potato...way too much fluff/bean skin for me.
Eggs and beans ...way to much gloop

Bloody love moule frites. Salty, soft and crisp together = delicious. Or maybe because I only eat them accompanied by a bottle of chilled white. Come on summer.

To the pp who said about bacon sarnies. Yes! Love getting a bit of the bread and rubbing it in the bacon fat in lieu of butter. Grin

Also, I love cauliflower and I love cheese but can't stand it together. Blugh.

PlatypusPie · 13/03/2019 23:47

My DH loves avocado mashed in with peanut butter . It’s khaki - food should not be khaki. Truly vile.

Meet0nTheledge · 14/03/2019 06:49

Ewww, no, you don't mix the peanut butter and avocado. Hot toast, layer of crunchy peanut butter, slices of cold avocado on top (pressed down a bit so they don't slide off). Hot/cold/crunchy/soft all in one, lovely.

@Ellieboolou27
Yes I love tea (black or fruit or herbal) and I like soups too. Is there a trend? Am I odd? GrinGrinGrin

Ellieboolou27 · 14/03/2019 17:32

Yes Grin

DuggeesWoggle · 14/03/2019 18:59

Fruit in cheese ie Wensleydale with cranberries or apricots. Bleurgh. Have the fruit on the side if you must but in it? Ruins the cheese.

DH had a bagel with marmalade and thinly sliced cheese when we were on holiday in Iceland and subsequently went through a phase lasting a good few months of having it in his sandwiches every day.

Yes to wine & chocolate. The chocolate tastes bitter with wine which is far too acidic for it.

Vonvon222 · 14/03/2019 19:05

Yes, fruit with any hot food. I love Apple pie but hate it warm, it has to be cold.

Pineapple on gammon steak

Cheese and tuna together is lovely especially on a baked potato.

Mum2jenny · 14/03/2019 22:44

I agree Duggees as I hate fruit with any warm dish

toooldforthisgame · 14/03/2019 23:49

Fish on pizza or seafood in curry.
Potatoes as a side to something that already has potatoes, like cottage pie.
I will have Marmite with beans or egg on toast though.
My husband has been known to do weird combinations - fish fingers, beans and rice for example.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 15/03/2019 01:08

Most American food combos perplex me.

Peanut butter and jam - separately I like both nut together they just taste weird.

Cakes with cream cheese icing - whoever thought that up needs their head examining. It just tastes off.

Chicken and waffles - what. The. Fuck. Is. This. My sister had this at a breakfast place and I tried some - revolting.

Macaroni cheese (can’t call it mac and cheese it sounds wrong!) as a side - yep totally agree. It’s a meal in itself. You can’t just serve up a smaller portion and call it a side.

JenniferJareau · 15/03/2019 17:53

Pineapple on pizza. Whoever thought of that must have been stoned. Yuk!

Kwackerly · 15/03/2019 22:17

Tuna and tomatoes, makes the tuna taste horribly fishy.

Red onion on pizza, vile aftertaste.

Goats cheese in combination with anything is very wrong
