What are some food combinations that you don't understand?

I have never really understood the combination of moules et frites. I quite like fries and I love mussels but the two don't really work together for me. I'd prefer some nice bread to dip in the sauce.

A pub I was in recently offered chips with their potato pie. Now I'm more than happy to double carb but chips with a sliced potato pie?

Mac and cheese as a side confuses me too. I love macaroni cheese/mac and cheese but it doesn't seem to work as a side dish to me. Perhaps I've been missing out all these years.

Which food combinations confuse or disgust you?

Butter on anything. Just ruins it.

AdaColeman · 12/03/2019 15:02

I agree about Surf & Turf not working as a combo, yet it was popular in restaurants back in the day, I've not seen it for years though.
I always thought it must have been dreamt up on a "clearing out the fridge" day! Grin

TiredTodayZzzz · 12/03/2019 15:07

Macorni on a baked potato. In fact any baked potato topping except cheese.

People who claim to dip their McDonald's fries in ice cream Envy

I love cheese and curry sauce Grin the only time cheese doesn't go with curry sauce is when it's curry from the Chinese

Probably driven by the fact I don't like beans, but bean juice mingled in with eggs.

Honestly makes me queasy just the sight of it.

VeraWangTwang · 12/03/2019 16:08

Pizza and chips, Vom

Jumping to the end of this thread to add my comment before I forget, so apologies if anyone has said this before.

In the restaurant Olive Garden in the USA they offered us soup as a side to EVERYTHING!

Order a pizza: "would you like soup with that?"
Order a bolognese: "would you like soup with that?"

No, I would not! Why would you??

Narya · 13/03/2019 13:24

I'm not big on meat and fruit together, pork and apple sauce is just about do-able but things like lamb and redcurrant jelly, turkey and cranberry sauce, or fruity tagines are a bit icky.
It's more than just a sweet/savoury thing though as I think bacon and maple syrup is great

BadlyAgedMemes · 13/03/2019 13:40

Baked beans, ideally, shouldn't contaminate any other food, apart from maybe a slice of toast, if you absolutely must.

I'll also agree that chocolate doesn't go with strawberries. Love chocolate, love strawberries, but it's a dull combo that diminishes both its components.

Same with peanut butter and chocolate. Or peanut butter and jam.

I was once at a slimming world class where the leader advised making up some smash potato and then topping it with tinned ravioli

As a student, I used to mix smash powder into a shop bought jar of curry sauce as a student. Heat it up in a microwave. I thought it was the best invention ever. Tinned ravioli, you say...? Grin

avocado with anything - especially on toast....really????? it's bad enough made into guacamole but on toast no thank you!

Meet0nTheledge · 13/03/2019 14:35

Avocado and peanut butter is one of my favourite toast toppings, I eat it most weeks.

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 13/03/2019 15:27

All these random Coca Cola flavour combinations. Stick to what you're good at Coca Cola. Coke and Coke Zero. That's it.
Also anything with salted caramel written on it. Salt and caramel? That's a no from me.
Last one, cauliflower cheese as a side. No. No. No. no.

Wellcolourmehappy · 13/03/2019 16:55

You are kidding me?! The Coca Cola with Lemon and Cherry Pepsi Max are the best!

ALongHardWinter · 13/03/2019 17:15

Pineapple on pizza. Or with anything actually.
The poster who mentioned 'double carbing' reminded of an incident quite a few years ago, when Woolworths was still around. I'd gone in their cafe and ordered a jacket potato with tuna. The woman serving asked if I wanted it with salad,or chips. I was Hmm about chips with a jacket potato!and said to her I'd have salad. And that I thought chips were a strange choice to have with a jacket potato. She said what's the difference between that and having garlic bread with lasagne? I said that was pasta and bread, two different types of carbohydrate, whereas jacket potato and chips were both potato. She didn't look convinced. Grin

Angie169 · 13/03/2019 17:41

I definitely agree with having fruit or not in any savoury dish is just wrong I remember it being the height of fashion to have curry sauce with a handful of raisins thrown in just why would you.?
Salted caramel is everywhere now it is the work of the devil I'll be glad when that trend is well and truly over
I agree chips with lasagna is a bit heavy so I would normally have a salad or garlic bread but the salad would be served separate from the lasagna so it doesn't get warm

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 13/03/2019 17:56

@Wellcolourmehappy
Yes I am. They are all vile. Come to think of it Coca Cola aren't really that good at making original coke anymore. So they just add shit flavours to a shit drink really. If you want coke with lemon that's fine, just add a real one Grin

Wellcolourmehappy · 13/03/2019 18:10

Funny enough Onetraumaatatimeplease I always preferred Coca Cola over Pepsi, especially the lemon one 😋, but lately I've found that Coca Cola tastes really synthetic and "chemically" so tend to go for the cherry Pepsi Max - unfortunately Pepsi don't do lots of different flavours but I live in hope!!!😉

Agree with all of these. Plain Coke only, cauliflower cheese is a main meal and salted caramel is horrible.

TeaAddict235 · 13/03/2019 20:54

Beef on pizzas
Fish on pizzas
Ketchup with anything
Cheesecake (nastiness on a plate)
Trifle (sloppy jaloppy food in different levels)
Eton mess (See above)
Mashed potatoes with anything
Raw tomatoes in a burger with wilting lettuce
Donor kebab meat (suspiciousness on rotation)

Ellieboolou27 · 13/03/2019 20:58

Tea with soup!!!!! I’ve seen quite a few nutters have a bowl of soup whilst sipping a cup of tea 🤢

Cream of broccoli with a cup of Yorkshire tea anyone?

Ellieboolou27 · 13/03/2019 20:59

teaAddict apart from fish on pizza I love all of your hates - are you a soup and tea person Grin

JumpingFrogs · 13/03/2019 21:04

Tuna and cheese
Peanut butter and jam
Sea salt with caramel or anything else that's sweet

marshmallowkittycat · 13/03/2019 21:05

Jacket potato with baked beans. The mere look of it makes me feel queasy. I just don't understand why they go together. Urgh.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 13/03/2019 21:38

Tuna and tomato. Just no.

Celticrose · 13/03/2019 22:22

Chip butties. That is just a carb fest and also serving bread and butter with fish and chips. Just no to both
